I recently purchased a 721 in 30-06 as a back up and foul weather gun. The gun is in very nice shape except someone cut the stock to just under 12" including the recoil pad. I have done a brief search for a replacement stock, either wood or synthetic, and a couple of questions have come up. First, does anyone know who makes an economical synthetic stock that will bolt on w/o modifications? Second, does anyone have a decent wood or synthetic stock that they will sell? Third, do the 722/725 stocks bolt right up to the 721? Last what about using a 700 series stock? Has anyone done this? How much work is it? I am looking for easy and economical as this gun is really going to see limited action. Thanks Rick

A 722 stock is a short action and will not fit. I'm not sure about the 725 but I don't think it will fit either. The long action 700 will fit but you have to rasp out the bolt notch to fit the straight bolt handle on the 721, since the 700 bolt is swept back. Then you have a big gap behind the bolt handle. I have a 722, and it's on its third 700 SA stock. Refitting the correct 700 stock to a 721/722 takes about 30 minutes of hand work. I've succeeded at it, so can assure you than anyone capable of slicing bologna without hurting themselves can get it done.

The bolt gap is pretty minor, and can be filled in with bedding compound on a synthetic stock, if it bothers you.

Were I looking to meet your criteria, I would buy a factory synthetic (tupperware) LA ADL stock. You will need to also buy a 700 trigger guard and magazine box. You may or may not need to file the magazine box to fit properly -- that's just a matter of assemble and see. Many people discount the tupperware stocks, but I've had one on my .35 Whelen for about 15 years, and it shoots under MOA and has held up extremely well.

Tupperware is easy and economical, and if you decide to upgrade later, you're not out much.

If I were looking for a 721 stock, I'd look at Gunbroker and Auctionarms first, then. Gunparts.com, and then look to see if a 725 stock can work.
I've been collecting Rem 722's and I'll keep my eye pealed for a 721 stock.
Rem 700 LA stocks can work if need be.

I just checked Gunbroker and there are two 721 stocks for auction, but you may not want either one...

We ended up putting an older B&C stock for a 700 on ours. opened up a lil in the channel for the barrel swell and then removed some for the saftey. Didnt have any issues with the bolt fitting.

I have a 721 stock that is in good shape
and might meet your needs.
It has a Pachmeyer pad at 13.5 inches.

Remington made two comb heights for the 721,
high comb and an iron sight version.

My stock is the earlier iron sight model with lower comb.
It will work with issue sights or a low mounted scope.
The comb height is similar to the regular Winchester
pre-64 m-70 stock.

My dad has a 721 .270. We had it fitted with a B&C 700 BDL stock and detachable magazine conversion. Hunting in Michigan required guns unloaded in the vehicle and between areas or drives he preferred dropping the magazine to cycling rounds through the chamber to empty the gun. Everything went together fine with minor modification of the stock.

I used a Remington 700 ADL factory injection molded synthetic stock on a 722 while I was waiting to find a stock that I liked better. It worked fine and since you can usually buy new take-off 700 ADL synthetic stocks for under $40, they are a low cost and effective solution.
