Using...........say...........a 150 or 180 gr. bullet how much distance do you gain comparing a 300 RUM to a 308 Win???
As a rule, it depenmds on the expansion range of the particular bullets you are using. Some bullets open well at 1500-1600 fps. Some don't do well below 2000-2100 fps.
As a rule, the faster it starts out, the further it goes before significant expansion stops.
However another problem can be too much, or too rapid expansion at the short ranges. E
It's a question of azimuth
The answer is always the same: how good is the man behind the rifle?

Either will kill stuff a helluva lot further away than the vast majority have any business shooting.

Yes, and the RUM will hit harder at all distances too.
Of course there are some that would say there is no differance between cartridges of like caliber except for the range they allow you to shoot. IMO this premise is flawed. And I am not a magnum guy per se.
True, but you still have to be able to hit your target. Carrying even twice the energy down range, but missing the target, don't do squat.
The driver and the expansion window of the bullet selected will decide the effective range. If I was going to run with the RUM I would use the heaviest bullet possible with the best BC to take advantage of the horse power. I see no advantage in running a 165gr bullet 500fps faster at the muzzle considering how fast velocity will bleed off.
Having hunted a bit with the ballistically similar 30/06 and then with the 300RUM for about five years, but BUSY years, I will throw out my .02 worth. To begin with, the three dozen or so animals I shot with each does not add up to a truly statisically significant or actualarially sound sampling. Add into the equation a dozen or so taken with the 300WBY which is quite similar to the 300RUM. That said, my experience with each tells me that so long as one can shoot it well, the 300RUM does indeed give visibly more 'kersmack' when it connects with critterflesh. What the 300WBY and RUM do, in my view, is allow us to send the heavier super bullets out much faster making us able to take larger game and greater distance, SO LONG AS THE SHOOTER AND GEAR ARE OTHERWISE UP TO THE CHALLENGE. With todays excellent bullets such as the Barnes TTSX in 130 to 168 gr weights the 308 and 30/06 are now much more capaple rounds than was true a decade or two ago, and deer sized game, perhaps even Elk, are in big trouble out to and in the case of deer maybe even a bit past past 500 yards with a marksman who knows his stuff and practices at the longer ranges. With a 180 gr TTSX starting out a 3300 fps +/- the rifle is now capable of taking larger classes of game at those ranges such as Elk and such and game the size of Moose and Eland can be cleanly taken and hit hard at ranges out to 300 yards. Maybe more but I know from my limited experience that out to 300 yards the 300 RUM and WBY with 180gr Barnes TSX and TTSX bullets are very deadly on animals up to an including these animals that wiegh in at almost 2,000 poounds. Perhaps it would work, but I would not feel as well armed pointing a 308 at such a large beast at such distances. Clear as mud ????? smile
If I wanted to shoot 200 grain bullets at ranges over 400 yds on a regular basis I would opt for a RUM.

The RUM is faster, flatter, and hits harder. It hits your shoulder harder as well. smile

The 308 has been used by the finest marksmen in the world to make long range shots look easy.

Big 30's are also good for shooting really excellent 180gr bullets out past 400 yards!

At normal hunting distances it doesnt matter. Going by memmory, and comparing 165 to 200 gr accubonds you have to be past 600 yards before the 200gr begins to pull away velocity wise. Wind drift would be another story.
The 165 AB is devasting on deer at RUM velocities and kicks quit a bit less than full house 200 gr AB loads for those that are recoil sensitive.
This year I am going to give the 150 e tip a try in my RUM and see how they do.

True, but not what was asked. In fact, the differences are pretty easily quantifiable when using the same bullets.

I like 165-16g bullets in my .308 Win, .30-06 and even the .300 Win (although it also gets 180s), so lets compare them.

Figuring a 165g AccuBond (BC .475), data from Nosler s 6th and zeroing for Maximum Point Blank Range for a 6 diameter target:

.308 Win
2910 fps = Muzzle Velocity, 24 barrel
247 yds = MPBR Zero
291 yds = MPBR
445 yds = -24
505 yds = -36
510yds = 1500fpe
525 yds = 2000fps

.300 RUM
3483 fps = Muzzle Velocity, 26 barrel
293 yds = MPBR Zero
344 yds = MPBR
525 yds = -24
590 yds = -36
785 yds = 1500fpe
800 yds = 2000fps

.300 RUM advantage
573 fps = Muzzle Velocity
46 yds = MPBR Zero
53 yds = MPBR
80 yds = -24
85 yds = -36
275 yds = 1500fpe
275 yds = 2000fps

Or put another way at 600 yards the 308 has almost 3 feet more bullet drop than the RUM with both using 165 AB.
This is for velcoity of 2900 for the 08 and 3400 for the rum.
i wouldn't use a bullet that weigh less than 200gr in my rum i shoot 200gr AB at 3200 fps or 210gr wildcats a tad slower .you lose the advantage the rum gives you when you use lighter bullets,at longer ranges

Very true, my 180 gr Scirocco II's have been good to me as well!

Interesting thread this is.
I own both a 308 and a 300RUM-I figure I have my 30 caliber bases covered pretty well!

My favorite load for my 300RUMs uses the 180gr tsx.
That is the one I use as well. Good on ya!
I don't think I, personally, could handle a .300 RUM from a standard sporter rifle... And if if I WAS willing to carry a heavier rifle, it sure wouldn't be a .308.

In other words, they'd be very different rifles. For me anyway.

In terms of pure cartridge gack, assuming equally accurate, reasonably shootable rifles*... The RUM will smoke the .308 at truly long range, because it will spin heavy long bullets at much higher speeds...

*again, they'd be different rifles if they were equally shootable.

What difference does spin speed make?
Classic.....
Spin is what we do when we put rifling in a barrel. It stabilizes the bullet. A big 30 will push a heavy for caliber bullet with enough additional speed to still cause it to expand and have penetrating energy left over at longer ranges.

Wildswalker, I LOVE your new signature line! Where did it come from? Whose quote? Original to you?

Given the same caliber, heavier bullets are longer and need a higher spin rate (RPM) for stabilization.

Given the same rifling twist rate, a faster projectile will spin at a higher RPM.

In short, increasing velocity for a given rifling twist as the same effect that increasing twist has for a given velocity - a higher spin rate and better stabilization of heavier bullets.

Jeebus guys...

I meant that it would spin a bullet down the tube at a higher velocity. Could have phrased it that it would toss a bullet faster... Fling one faster... Etc.

I wasn't sayin' squat about twist rates. My bad if it came across that way. Your bad if you tried to make something into something it wasn't. Again.

Only if your shooting past 600, which most hunters are not.

200 gr bullets from big 30's are great alright, but I've noticed the elk can't tell the difference between them and a good 180.They die from either one.For that matter, a very good 165 makes them completely limp as well smile

Day in and day out, you'll do as well with a 180 as a 200.180's don't bounce off at long range.

we have a feeder set up on a sendero that we can shoot hogs out to 1000yds
Then I would be looking at heavy Bergers and Matchkings.
the ABs shoot better out of my 700p than the SMKs haven't tryed the bergers yet but i do plan on it
I played around with the 240gr match kings in my rum and they shot pretty good. Recoil was a bit brisk..

Exactly the big cases really shine with the big heavy bullets. My 270 Allen shooting the 195 wildcats with a BC of .8 at 3100fps kicks some serious a$$ makes my 300 wby look a little sick shooting 200 AB at 3120fps

That would be a hoot... grin
