Look on website for Petersen's RifleShooter magazine and there is a video of the new 84L. This should be a slick rifle!
http://www.rifleshootermag.com/right on the main page...
* Kimber Model 84L - a new rifle from Kimber. The "L" stands for "Long" and is a full two inches longer than the 84M. The first 450 84Ls will be made for the Rocky Moutain Elk Foundation and will feature upgraded wood and enhanced engraving etc. The 84L is six ounces heavier than the 84M and will be available to the consumer (non- Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Versions) around March 2010. Price will be similar to other 8400s.
"Years in the making, it's taken quite a bit of lobbying from the rifle guys to the people that didn't understand the significance of this gun." - Kimber's Aaron Cummins
Should be 6lbs even...
Looks like a good candidate for my next 270
So.. is this the upgrade from the current LA Montanas? I want a 25-06 in SS/Synthetic.
(can't watch vids on my computer)
these should be very nice rifles.can't wait.

If you call a full pound lighter an upgrade, then yes it is

More like a redesign. Built more in line with the 84M specs. Hopefully they got rid of the perch belly!
84L Montana ought to tip the scale around 5 1/2lbs naked.
I handled a current 25-06 Montana, and it felt terrible in the hands.. But I was told to wait, as they were going to fix that abomination of a LA stock..
One of those, in .257Roy.......................
9.3x62mm
I simply want to punch it AI. Can't think of anything more sexy right now than a 25-06AI in a nice lightweight factory package..
9.3x62mm
ooofffdah...........
9.3x62mm
I would rob a 7-11 to have that one!!
Just kidding(barely)
9.3x62 would be the best!
.280AI would rate high on the want list of several...
Well, I guess the cat is officially out of the bag now. The 84L has been in the works for three years... I'd been sworn to secrecy on the deal
Brad,
you gonna get one, or ten??
I went to buy a kimber in 30-06 once upon a time and hated the long action 8400, wound up with a 300WSM which is in my opinion a good rifle. As I now have .257 Roberts kimber, I am almost certain that I will sell my Weatherby markV 270 winchester and get one of these in the montana style in 270 winchester.
Great to see the 84L is not loose talk but reality in 6 months or so. Now if they clean up their QC issues, it will have a strong following. Good for them for "listening".
This just made my entire year!
Brad,

I'd like a 270 and 338-06... and maybe a 30-06 too
Alright guys, time to cough up the money. Lots of us said we'd take one if they made one. What do I do now?
With Kimbers great reputation for quality control I think I'll wait a year to see how the first batch turns out.
Yeah, that's a pretty good excuse for not actually buying one. Wish I'd thought of it. Have to come up with one of my own.
Wonder how many of those who dream and desire will really end up with a new Kimber. Especially since there are a lot of calibers they WON'T be building them in.
Guess it's safe to wish for something they'll never produce, cheaper also.
No excuse just a good reason based on reality.
9.3x62 would ring the bell for me, or a 338-06.
No mention of a Montana version and the 84L will have a 24 inch barrel. You'll be 7 1/2 lbs or more scoped and loaded with sling.
Dealers will be gouging on these bastards,so it'll be easy to wait a year or three until prices come down and problems are worked out.

Not quite... the Montana Version should come in around 5oz's heavier than the 84M Montana... that means if I deck out a 30-06 with Uncle Mikes Mountain Sling, four rounds, Talley Lwts and 6x36 Leupold I'll be around 6lb's 9oz's.
I would definitely like to see one in person. My consternation would be picking the cartridge. Am guessing it would be sensible to flip a coin between the .30-06 and a .270, but for a whitetail rifle, a .25-06 would be ideal around here. More than likely, it would be a matter of taking whatever I found in stock. LOL.
Thanks for the link Dan. The video says that the rifle is called the 84L, has a 24" barrel and will be chambered for the 280AI along with other 06 size rounds.
Can someone tell me what the video says on how much the 84L weighs? My hearing is so bad. My 84M Montana with a 2.5-8 Conquest in Weavers weighs 6.25 lb and the 8400 Montana in 270 WSM with a 3-9 Conquest is 7.5 lbs. There may be room in between those weights. Waiting to read how much more the 84L weighs.
They said around 6 pounds.
My wife was thrilled to hear the news...She wants one in 280AI!
I'm already deciding which rifles in the safe will be sold to fund a 84LA
Tell Maygun I just happen to know where she can get .280AI brass..
Ingwe
It keeps getting better, I'll let her know!
Wishful thinking but a 6.5-284!!!
Topped with a Zeiss victory, 100grn Barnes...
OK, back to reality.
I'll take a 25-06.

What bideo link?
Find the link in the second post on this thread.
Doh!
According to the bideo there will be a .280AI and it will hold 5 cartridges, 24" barrels.
It will hold six for some!

That exactly describes my Ti '06. I could further trim the weight with a new FP assembly and an Edge stock, but I'm happy with where it's at for the coin invested.
Yes this is very good news. Best of both worlds. No doubt it will cut deeply into the existing ultra light lineup. I wonder if they will keep the magnum cartridges in the original 8400 profile?
Very cool.
The current LA Kimbers suck butt. No point in owning one, etc.
I have a 30-06 and a .338 I love... no reason to change a thing there... hmmm... maybe a .338-06 or a .280?
Its also smart of Kimber to come out with a 24" barrel. It will be easy to hit 3000fps with a 130gr Partition in the old 270WCF.
Much of this is old news, but the 84L will be launched in 25-06, 30-06 and 270Win in the Classic and Classic Select Grade. Actual weight is 6 pounds, 2 ounces, with a 24-inch barrel, and magazine capacity is 5 rounds.
Expect them to begin taking orders around November 1st.
RMEF has already bought the first 500.
Hopefully the Montana version will debut not long after...
I'll take a 280AI in a Montana thank you.
I've just officially released my own "Press Release"
I have a CHUBBY!!
Yes, I'll be needing two of them, in Montana trim. One in 280 AI and a 338-06
Now, what to unload???
This announcement is playing heck with bigwhoop's Montana in .30-06 on the classifieds...
I think I will wait for the Montana in this gun, I will be replacing a synthetic stocked rifle in .270winchester. I am happy with my 300WSM but just could never see the 270WSM for some reason, personal prejudice I guess.
I personally am pumped. My only problem is can I sell my current 8400 30-06 to fund one? Dang, I hope the new one shoots as good as my current 8400. Anybody really want an accurate 8400 Classic '06?

Now doesn't that sound nice, I may just have found a reason to finally do my 06 AI....grin
Of course, I'll just have to have it abreviated to 23".
Dober
YYAAAWWWWNNNNN!
Let me know when they have a left handed offering....maybe then I will get excited.

same problem, anyone want a very accurate MarkV synthetic in .270win?
I'll take a 280AI in a Montana thank you.
I may be in that very same boat. 6x42 W/M-1 elevation turret in Talley's. Only thing better would be if one could actually build a 284Win on a 84M.
I'll take a 280AI in a Montana thank you.
If I were gonna jump, that's what I'd get......just to see what the hell all the fuss is about
I wander why they have'nt offered the 84 in any of the Ruger compact mags. The current 84 with a round thats engineered for a 18" or 20" barrel seems like a home run

How much does that Mk V weigh?? I have a SS Fibermark decked with std Leupy bases and a FX-II 6x36 at just under 7 pounds. It ain't going anywhere anytime soon.
Me thinks a McM edge is cheaper than a new Montana and should get you close to Montana mass for 1/2 the price.

I believe the engineer from Kimber said that the 84M's action is too small in diameter for the 284 Win. The same would be the case and more for the Ruger Compact Magnums.
The 84M is a benchmark rifle by itself in just say a 308. Going to the 84L in a 06 or 280 may have the rifle jump some in my hands with the recoil.
So many guns. Good to know the 84L is on its way. Something to look forward to.
I could love one of those suckers in 280AI...
The mark V is not too heavy at 8 pounds wearing a Zeiss rapid Z600 3 x 9 variable in Talley Steel Mounts and synthetic adjustable rifle sling.
It is at a gunsmith now getting an inch off the barrel as the crown is damaged due to a drop of water in it that I did not see and I clean my guns after the season. My mistake.
A bell and carlson stock which is all that I would invest in it is 2.34 pounds, the tupperware stock that is on the gun now sucks from a user unfriendly standpoint. The gun has been quite accurate with most anything in the 130 catagory that you chose to shoot thru it and is certain death for white tail deer using Nosler solid base seconds....
So I really need a stainless steel 30-06 is my point.
I didn't read all this thread, nor do I know much about this model. So could someone please tell me what cal's are coming out. 338-06???

I hear it is going to be 25-06 , 270 , 30-06.

In that little video clip they also said .280 Ackley
Yeah... Its not going to happen tho..
I wonder if a 30-06 with scope that weights 6.5 pounds will need more than 3.2 inches of eye relief from the scope shooting 180's at 2700?

That's why I'll be putting a 6x36 on the Montana 84L... I got scoped twice between the running lights with the 3-9x40 on my 300 WSM Montana on this years elk hunt...
I got bopped a couple of years ago by my Montana 300WSM with a 3.5-10x40 on it. I was semi-prone in the snow over my backpack zeroing in on the last cow in the string. As we all know, that "pronish" position tips the head a bit more forward and in the way of a feisty 300WSM.
I'll have to check the Leupie catalog and see what the eye relief is on a 6x36.
OK the Z3 might be out! eye relief is not that great based on what I see.
That's why the VXIII 2.5-8's run atop my 8400 7 WSM's...
