Opinions wanted. I picked up a NIB Rem Model 7 with fiberglass stock in 7mm SAUM for a steal. Great round I know. I have a .270 wsm Rem XCR take off that I was looking to do something with. I currently have a .270, .280, and am building a .280AI. Now I know that I have tons of overlap and will not gain anything with one over the other. Would you keep it as a 7mm SAUM or rebarrel it for fun? The saum basically duplicates the .280AI in short action and the .270 wsm can run a little hotter than the standard. If I rebarrel then I would basically have a .280 and .280AI, and a .270 and .270 Improved. Thoughts?

I would leave as is with the 7SAUM(just because I'd like one).

Wonder if a WSM would be a bad thing with the Model 7 action?

The .270 WSM is a fine round, but in my experience the 7mm SAUM does all the same things and a little easier. Unless you just like to dink with various cartridges (something I admit to myself) I'd leave it alone.

I concur; better choice of bullets/loads wether you reload or not....

I love the 7 SAUM, if you roll your own you'll have no problems.

Lee-

I had a very similar encounter with a bargain 7SAUM and delusions of a project. Like you, I have gobs of overlap in that neighborhood. What cured me of the delusions was scoping it and a couple quick loads.....it remains a 7SAUM. wink

I like the 7 SAUM & would leave it that way, though I don't particularly care for the Model 7 package.

I'd love one in the old Ti configuration.

Would the a WSM have trouble feeding into a rebarreled SAUM?
Personally I'd leave it, I've been around 2 or 3 M7's in 300 WSM and they were all a nightmare when it came to feed.

Which is to say that they fed like generic dog poop!

from my experience a model 7 in 300 wsm didn't feed with a flip and there were problems with factory federal ballistic tips fitting in the mag box. i have 2 model 7's in 300 saum

Looks like the .270 WSM is 25-50 fps faster with same bullet weights. Not worth it to me unless maybe I only shot factory ammo as there is a bit more to choose from in .270 WSM out there.

Thanks guys. That's what I wanted to hear! I'll keep it as is. I do reload so that was never a consideration and since I reload for the .270 and .280 I have lots of bullets for each so that was also not a problem.

Anybody want a .270 wsm XCR take off?

Anybody want to help me scope it?

2-7x33LR Leupold gets my vote.

I'm thinking about 2.5-8x36 VX-3, 3-9x40 Conquest, or one of the AV/Z-3 Swaro's. May also look at the 2-7x36 Kahles CL. No experience with the 2-7x33LR Leupy. Talk me into it.

Mounted a Leupold Silver VX-1 2-7 Heavy Duplex on my stainless Model 7 7mm SAUM. Looks good ! Not over-kill.

Ebby-
Mine sports a 2.5x8 VXIII in Talley lightweights but I could easily like the DoberDotz in a 2x7 or the new Z3.

partial to the 7SAUM.

vote is on the 6x36.

Ya, keep the 7SAUM and put a loopy 6x36 with dotz on top.. In talley LW's of course.

Essentially the same performance, the 7 SAUM is a keeper for me too. I loaded it down this year for my wifes cow hunt with a 100 grain X bullet. I was contemplating a 25 SAUM until I shot it. Mine has a 3x9 Bushnell Elite on it.

I have both, 1 700 in 270 WSM, 1 700 in 7mm SAUM, and 2 7s in 7mm SAUM. AFAICT, they fill the same niche and produce the same down-range results with the 140 grain bullets that I'm shooting from both of them.

I prefer the 700 in 7mm SAUM because it is SS and I generally prefer SS to CM in my "working" rifles, but they function equally well. 1 of the 7s in 7mm SAUM keeps asking to be rebarreled to 25 SAUM, but I'm resisting the pressure.

Having shot 2 deer with a 270 WSM on Monday this week has only solidified it's place as one of my favorite rounds ever. It's very accurate, flat shooting comes in some sweet rifles and recoil is very manageable.

That being said in a Remington Model 7 the SUAM's are the way to go. They were pretty much developed because the WSM's are just slightly too big to work well in a Model 7. You can shoehorn them in but it's kinda like stuffing a 454 V-8 into a Neon - you can do it but why? The SAUM's are harder to find brass wise but are excellent rounds in and of themselves and fit right in Model 7's.

So for me I'll take the 270 WSM unless it's for a Model 7..........................DJ

Good words there Rancho. And by the way your lil sweetheart of a 7 saum is the first rem of any style that I've worked with that fed even close to the way that it should. All of the 700's/7's in WSM's have been terrible and that's being kind.

Your lil 7 now, that is one sweet rig. If'n I didn't already have a nice lil .270 I'd be a thinking...<g>

I have the ssBDL 7SAUM,a.280AI in a short action and I truly enjoy the rifle. The only problem it has caused me is having to decide whether to keep my .280AI as well! Monashee

I had trouble with the only Rem WSM (300) I had. My 308s and 30-06s feed perfect every time. You saw what the 308 can do at about 12:15 pm on 11/16/09.

My wsm feeds great. 2 shots back 2 back without a hitch and a DRT deer about 7:52 am 11/19/09. Anxious to put this thing through its paces. I'm done for a while.

Keep the 7SAUM and turn the 270WSM into a 350RM. You were looking to do something with the WSM, with a 350RM you'd have a nice elk and black bear thumper. Just a thought.

Midway has brass in stock for 7 SAUM. i've got 200 pieces on the way; coupled with the 100-ish or so I already have, I'm anticipating shooting the barrel out before needing brass.

Sorry Bill, didn't see this till just now. Thanks for the compliment. smile It's a McMillan, Remington Classic pattern, in 50/50 black/white swirl.

I order direct through McMillan (active duty get a discount) but I do believe there's a sale going on right now through the Campfire gear shop.

I've had both and found them to be incredibly similar in every way. The 7mm saum feeds a little better but the 270 wsm fed decently. I still have the 7mm saum, but I still load for the 270 wsm as my good friend bought it from me. For me it's the cool factor of the saum, and the fact that I haven't met anyone else at the range or in the field that has one. Being a handloader factory ammo doesn't play a role in my decision, but I will be buying a 30-06 in the near future, as a backup and sometimes primary, and factory ammo is simply not a problem there.
