J.Y.Jones used a remington 700 30-06, i think, an ADL. what scope, mounts rings ect? what bullets?
i dont own a copy or i would look it up myself. i had to do an interlibrary transfer from FL just to read it.
Don't know what he used, but would think a Ruger M77 Hawkeye/Mk II w/ factory rings and 4x scope, you choose the make, would about do it. .30-06 Springfield of course. Not exotic, but would work quite well.
I know it was a remington model 700 in 3006, I think adl. Dont know scope, and I know he switched bullets depending on whether it was pronghorn or grizzlies.
Funny you bring this up, Ringworm, I was thinking some of the same things yesterday and went as far as to look the book up on Amazon.

I just bought an older 700 ADL .30-06 out of the classifieds and am thinking I need to read the book and see if I can't replicate what Mr. Jones did. Not sure what Jones used, but if it shoots well, I plan to slide my ADL into an Edge (or maybe a B&C TI if I want to save a little) with Talley lightweights and a Leupold 6x36 and hunt. I have spent too much on rifles and not enough on hunting over the last several years.

If I would have done this 10 years ago, I could have made a trip or two to Africa, New Zealand, Sonora and/or Alaska with the money I would have saved on custom rifles that really don't work any better than a factory gun.
DMM-stick it in a Ti take off and save the cheddar and go forth and fill up an ark or three!

I'd be willing to bet that 99% of what the people from the Fire ever do could be done easily with just such a rig!

In this context I have found Grancel Fitz article in Sports Illustrated very interesting.

I just might do that, Mark, if I can find a Ti stock. Stocky's has been backordered on the original Tis and I haven't located a take off. But, if I can find one, it would get me into my entire rig (including new stock, scope and mounts) for under $1K, which is attractive.

Thanks for the link, there's a lot of wisdom in that story.

Do you know how long the backorder is? Im building a similar rifle in .270 win. I wanna order onr from them as they have the best price but not if it takes 5 years to get it.
Podunk, check your pm regarding backorder. Don't want to high jack Ringworm's thread any more than I already have in that nobody has exactly answered his question as of yet.
Fine read:

My goto: CDLSF ought-six anniversary edition barrelled action purchased on the fire, Ti Alaskan purchased from Stocky's, talleys, vxIII 2.5-8 b&c, alumina rainkote kit, and next generation thrity-ought-six user looking over the top! smile

remington 700 adl in 30-06
redfield 2-7 scope and redfield rings
i've got jones book and while i didn't get it down for this response, i remember he used partition reloads. 150gr for deer and smaller, 165gr for stuff a little larger, 180gr for still larger stuff, then 220gr for bears and walrus. sometime later during his quest, he switched to just the 165s and 220s i think.

i seemed to remember he had some accuracy issues during his quest, so his smith cut the 22" barrel down to 20". he finished the last several animals with a 20" wood stocked adl.

the is a fellow in texas (don't know if he is still alive) who killed the same animals with his rem 700 bdl 7mm rem mag.

if one had the bucks today, one could probably do the same thing, even with a 700 sps, savage weather warrior, or a m70 ew (among others).
I got to share a campfire with Chick Donnelly, one of the last gunsmiths to train under Parker Ackley...

I had to ask him what he was using for elk hunting since that is what we were out doing..he indicated that he used ONE gun and ONE gun only for almost all of his hunting..

A Rem 721 he bought new in the early 1950s, chambered in a 30/06.
I asked had he ever had a barrel chambered on it in any different calibers? his answer was NOPE..

He couldn't recall home many different barrels the rifle had worn in his lifetime, but they were all 30/06 barrels... and he had some early Leupold 4 power scope on it as I recall, with a post reticle..

Said it was all he ever needed for any big game hunting.

that is a pretty strong attestment from a guy who could build himself about anything he ever wanted...and of course cost being no object..
Anybody believe it can be done with .270 win?

For the climax of the hunt, it's not so much what you use, it's the getting there, say 200yds from the critter no matter what critter it is. Once you're there, at that mark, say 200 yds from the critter, any large number of rifles-yes, even some out of a bubble pack from Walmart-will do the job efficiently.

The question you have to ask yourself is, do I enjoy the hunt more or do I enjoy the rifle more or am I somewhere in between, enjoying some aspects of both. Is the rifle just a tool that if it were no more responsive than a fence post or had the beauty of a jack hammer it wouldn't matter-just give me the hunt. Most of us don't fall into that camp.

There are those who'd rather their wondering be limited to no more than their familiar haunts forever if they could carry a tool-a gun-that is a work of art that drew as much attention as their wondrerings or even their destination.

And this has nothing do to with caliber or chambering. The 30-06 will do the job whether out of a bubble pack rifle or a most expensive custom rifle.

remington 700 adl in 30-06
redfield 2-7 scope and redfield rings

i picked up a remington 700 ADL 30-06 yesterday at acadamy sports for $350. I can get a redfield revolution 2-7 for $130 and i'll have todays equal of his set up for less than $500.
thats a common mans rifle if there ever was one. grin

Most welcome - did you see the "view this issue feature". Lets one browse the pages. Neat stuff. Picture of the gun there.
My first rifle was an ADL with an oil dipped walnut stock in .270 win. I had dads rifles before but it was the first i bought on my own. With nothin but a trigger adjustment itll shoot .4 inches as long as i do my part. Thatd sure be something to do what jones did or attempt to with a sentimental rifle.
I was saddened immensely after reading this book back in Australia. The reason for my sadness was that the ammo he used was loaded in the 1970's by a deceased friend.

That was not the part that saddened me, though I understandthe sentiment, it was the statement that the MTM box of mixed partition containing 150, 165 and 200 grain partitions was all that was necessary to cover his next 25 years of hunting.

After burning 25-30 pounds of powder a year, it was a shock.

JW
After shooting deer with several common and not so common calibers, I've all but made up my mind to settle on a couple of decent loads in my 30-06 that can be used for just about anything within reason.
I have a new Hawkeye in 257Rob that will be my light rifle that can also be my wifes rifle if she chooses to hunt.
I keep dinking with different calibers and rifles each year, spending money that could go for a hunt. I guess I'm also a little tired of shooting groups trying to get something workable. I would rather get in some field practice along with shooting for fun. Time is precious.
This all may be born out of having to work harder than I think a guy should to get rifles to shoot in recent years.
Looking back in notes and from memory I did not have to work this hard to get rifles to shoot well years back and that was before I messed with triggers, bedding and had cheap scopes on everything.
I don't expect my rifles to shoot bug holes, but getting 1 1/2 MOA from the get go should not be to much to ask.

Seems to me that some of the best hunters I know hunt with one or two rifles for everything they do.
Just my .02
This thread is HERESY! And something I think about doing all the time:

1. Clean up and sell just about every firearm I currently own.
2. Take the proceeds and build a modest collection of hunting and defense arms in standard calibers.
3. Spend the rest of my days hunting at every opportunity.

My good ol' 700 Mountain Rifle .270 purchased at a yard sale in 1988-89 is sitting scopeless, got a 6x36 Leupy sitting in a closet. And can get Talleys at Bass Pro in Nashville...

Yeah, a .22-250, .270 and a .375 really could do it all for hunting...
Just clicked on CMG's link, and Holy Moley! That issue of SI was printed the day after I was born!

Too bad my dad was reading Jack O'Connor and Elmer Keith in those days...

Also noticed he didn't kill a single animal in North America east of the Mississippi...
I am sort of going in that same direction. I am looking at the .204Ruger, .270 Win. and the 375 H&H. Of course "loonyism" could show up at any given time.
cmg,
Thanks for the link. Its printed and in my folder.
Yes, without a moment of hesitation. The .270Win from 130's to 160's can get it done.
For a one-rifle-rifle I'd do a Kimber 84L 30-06 cut to 22 or 23" with a Leupold of some sort on top in detachable Talley's with backup open sights installed. I'd just stick with 180 Partitions for everything. A Kimber 308M Montana would work equally well no doubt.
cmg,
Now use your skills to find and link the August 1973 Sports Afield story by John Jobson on the 7x57.
I followed Fitzs' reference back to the SI of 091657. There, Ed Zern gives the reader his opinion on a 10 gun battery including handguns, rifles and shotguns. Pretty interesting.

I met him a few years back.He was on Vancouver Island hunting elk.Y.J was using a new Remington rifle chambered in 7mm Remington Ultra Mag.
now isnt then and then is when he wrote the book...
I've been on that road for a few years. I've already sold (two-7mm-08, 338WM, 7mmRM Ti, and 243) cry I'm down to: Kampfeld 250 Savage Ackley, CDLSF Thirty-06, DG 375HH. I only have two left to sell VS 223, and Savage 99 EG 300. I'm finding it hard to get rid of them.

I know Bigwhoop has move his fair share of Kimber, because I purchased one for my dad. wink

Doesn't include 77/17HMR and SS 10/22 Mannlicher.

Yes I have moved a bit of "iron". I went into the archives of that Fitz article and you can open the pages of that issue.
His rifle was a Rem. 30 with a rear peep setup that allowed you to site under the scope rings and line up on a specially built front site. Pretty ingenious setup.
168 TSX in front of 57 gr of H414 out of my 1978 Tikka will drop deer, bear and moose wihout a hitch. If I had to, perhaps a 200 gr accubomb for everything else that was bigger than a moose. If I were buying new glass for it, it would be a 2.5-8x36 Leupy VX-III. Right now it wears a Mueller 3-10 TAC-II.
jones "retired" his adl 30-06 after he took that last animal needed to complete his quest (with that one rifle). i read in a gun rag a few years ago that he has moved on to use other semi-custom and custom rifles. he has the coin to afford any rifle he wants.
I'm betting the memories of the hunts will last longer and be looked upon more later in life than any rifle you could own. I know when I was sitting with my dad, whom had less than 2mos to live, we didn't talk about the things we'd had, but we did talks lots about the things we did.
Pointer,

that post of yours carries a wisdom and the makings for a sigline.

Any man could do worse than following the advice of minding more the thing he did vs the things he has.

Bigwhoop,

I can not find that Jobson article either. I have looked for it for so time now.
I am in the middle of having this basic idea of a rifle built. I was lucky enough to buy it all here online at the campfire. Once complete I will call it my campfire rifle! Remington 700 ADL with iron sights '06 in a take off stock from a Remington Ti. X Mark trigger installed and currently have the rifle bedded at the smith. Also got a Leupy FXII 6x36 with post/duplex installed and will sit in QR rings for if and when the irons need to be used.

Plan to work up a 165gr Sierra hpbt load and a 180gr partition load.

I made the descission to get this gun setup that way and learn it like the back of my hand. Range time will be a commitment and then hunt the dog out of it.

Sound Wisdom. Just don't tell the CRF addicts.

JW
In a few years, my next rifle project will be a CRF....

I really want a pre 64 winnie in .270- you know, for the really dangerous stuff.
cmg- Thanks for the kind words. But no older than I am and no more experience than I have I'm not sure I have much of a resume for passing on 'wisdom'. wink But, that experience with my father did open my eyes up regarding some aspects of life.
I think that most hunting in the lower 48 could be accomplished with a 12GA shotgun, 17HMR and a 30-06 derivative from 27 to 33 caliber. Go ahead and make mine a 280 smile
that book is a must read for HUNTERS. Jones used the rifle as a tool to do what we all should focus on, the hunting. I am guilty of puting more mental effort into rifles than hunting. Need to sell the rifles and go hunting. I have never not make a rifle shot on game because it was the rifle or calibre's fault.
