i have a match grade .323 8mm blank layin around and trying to figure out what to do with it.
i have a 308 hb i rarely shoot, or even a l/a and make an 8mm -06.

dumb idea, or what should i do with it ?

what would you ?
i've got two 8-06AI's so i say go for that!
what are you shooting in them ? and how fast ?
couldn't honestly tell you velocity cause i haven't crono'ed them but i've been playing with 180BT's, 170 Speers, 185 hornadys and some 150's that i can't think of who's they are right now. it's a soft shooter and i really like it, haven't kilt anything with it but i'll rectify that next year.

Try the 8x57. It gets no respect.

It should be just like a 338Fed and I say go for it. Only issue would be the dies but they can be bought. There will always be 308 brass and plenty of 8mm bullets. If you want to keep things simple there is always a 8x57 but you'd have to go with your long action.

Hey, you're going wildcat why not get crazy and do a 8mm-284.

You could still use your short action and you'd have near -06 case capacity.

With the relatively short 8mm bullets you could easily stay within mag constraints too.

Just a thought.
i have a supply of 284 brass too.
hhhmmmmmmm ???

something to think about for in the future.

A true Rifle Looney. Spend another thousand just keep a barrel from lying around. I salute you sir.

spattermatic,

I, too, have an 8mm countoured blank lying around. My intent when I purchased it, was to rebarrel a Ruger # to .325 WSM. But then Winchester came out with the 1885 in .325 WSM, and I purchased one of them. I even had a #1 in .300 Winny to use for a donor. smile Thus, I just shelved the idea.

Recently, I purchased a set of 8x68S dies on ebay. And coupled to the fact that I have 2 or 3 boxes of new, unprimed brass, I think that's what I'm going to do. The next hurdle is to find a reputable 'smith with the reamer. Once that's accomplished, I suspect, it'll be a done deal!

I've thought of the 8x68S several times but have always been put off by the odd sized rim.

nsaqam, that's the beauty of a Ruger #1. They have a spring loaded extractor. A bit of variance in the rim diameter does not make one iota of difference. smile

That is true and the #1 is a beautiful rifle.
If it were my blank, I would look for a mag bolt face Remington and go see how an 8mm Rem Mag performs.
thanks all.
ever since hunting in germany i have swooned over an 8x68s. cool round.
i had an 8mm mag, and it is now a 300 rum.
between the 2, the 8 mag kicked the piss outta me.
it's the only rifle i had to put a muzzle brake on besides my barrett.

i do not shoot my remington varminter much anymore, even tho it will eat a ragged hole, it's just too heavy to lug around.

Ballistically, it would just about duplicate the 8x57.

If you wanna play with it, go ahead.

8x 57 is practical choice.

So, I would go 8mmx54R mosin Nagant . . . grin

The 8x60S is also worthy of consideration! (If using a long action.)

Grafs even carries the brass (Prvi), so no case forming needed.

The .325WSM has not been mentioned. Mahap the best bang for the short action buck in a .323.

I have a lot of 8mm Mausers and a couple of .32Win levers. I like them all, but the .32WSM interests me.

Word on the street is the 9.3 makes a preferred choice for the ladies...if even a 66.

Seriously, personally ZERO interest in an 8mm. I'd sell the blank and do something else. You could sell the action, bbl, AND smith fees and buy a 338 Federal Tikka T3, scope, and some ammo.

But that's just the economic side of things. If you want to play something different, an 8-08 would be fine, or WSM, or 284, on on the 350RM.

OR, go 7BR case and run 180s around 24-2500 for a woods rifle.

Loads for a 338/7BR here: http://www.reloadersnest.com/query_bw.asp?CaliberID=389&BulletWeight=180

I vote 8mmBR. 19" bbl

I made up some 8mm/308 rounds for someone using a 170 grain SMP Speer... that was a very effective round..

they've necked it up and down to all the other bullet diameters..

so they need to standardize 308s necked to 25, 270 and 8mm and that should about cover it all...

I've posted before about my "former" 8mm Rem Mag. I agree, it was the nastiest recoiling thing I've ever shot! eek

If it shoots that good, don't kill it. Sell it off and find a more suitable donor.

If it were me that had the 8mm barrel, I'd do one of two things, in this order.

1- sell the barrel and buy something more practical. Nothing in 8mm excites me. Just can't find a reason to go 8mm over 338 (338-08, 338-06, 338 Win mag, between them, they cover about anything), much better bullet selection n 338, etc.

2- If you're determined to use the 8mm blank, I'd be thinking of going with the 325 WSM. Don't have a short mag action, so it's "easier" to go with one of your existing actions? You're gonna lose any argument about "easy" or "practical" by building some one-off 8mm-something anyway! laugh

Using short 308 action, no changes needed for BR, 308, 284 case, otherwise may need to open up boltface and install Sako Extractor as well.
blank goes back into the tube and into the closet for another day.
