What's your opinion? I'm looking to get a new rifle for deer hunting along the hunt club power line. Max range (for me) would be about 300 yds. Got either and like/dislike?

I don't care for either, but of the 2 I guess I'd get the Browning.

Consider a 760 or 7600 Remington.

If it were me, I'd try to find a good used BAR, as mine had served me well in the past.

I don't have any experience with the other two.

I have a 750 carbine in 308 and it is very good. Unlike the browning, the 750 is designed to handle slow burning powders and ANY factory ammo made now or ever made. That includes all the light magnum, superformance, High energy, Power max, etc.

My gun has over 700 rds thru it and it feeds well and shoots deer ammo under 1.5" with little trouble. If I size the cases correctly, it never fails to feed or eject the shell casings. The gas port design and location also help deal with powder/bullet fouling better than previous remington semi-autos. The Browning has a habit of breaking things internally if you try to load it hot or with slow burning powders like H4831, rel-22, etc.

About the only thing I can say that is thr trigger stinks. But the local 'smith cleaned it up nice and now it's creep and grit free while breaking at about 3.5pounds.

I know where there's an as new 740 that I would be all over if I thought it would run. Remington autos don't have a great rep.

JM - I had a Browning Safari 7MM a few years ago but sold it due to its weight + the scope. the browning is looking better as I read some stories on the Remington's trigger pull, etc..
If anyone else has some experience with either, I'd like to hear some more.

The aluminum receiver on the Browning is something I'd not care for much.

Personally, I think the 750 is a trimmer handier rifle. My gun has the synthetic stock and it shoulders really nice and fits the hands well. It weighs no more than the normal bolt gun.



The Brownings always seemed bigger and heavier than needed. The R1 and Winchester are the same way as the Browning. Bigger and heavier than I like.

I've had severeal BAR's and a 2 Remmmy. The only problem I ever had with the BAR, was in my .270 the spring under the forearm broke. Browning was very apologetic and I had a new spring in three days. The Hemmy Remmy were junk. The first was a 742 Woodsmaster, lived up to the name " jamm-a-matic " (headspace was way out} . The second, couldn't group better than 3"@ 100yds. with handloads. BTW, both Remmy were .270, the second one was a 7400. Now, as you have stated some of the BAR's have some weight to them. It's because of this that I'm down to one. It's the BAR longtrac all camo in a .300 Win Mag (couldn't pass up the deal) . This thing shoots up a storm and haven't even handloaded for it yet. The weight is far less than Safari BARs. Very comfortable to shoot( I'd compare it to a .30-06 bolt). Needless to say, I wouldn't look twice at a Remington, it's a shame as the factory is only 15min from my house. FWIW , out of the 5 BAR's i've had, all were MOA shooters. Good luck.

The 750 uses those same, crappy, stamped magazines that have been the bane of Remington's semi-autos for decades.. They're worthless, pure and simple..

Okay, the Browning is on order and will be here mid week, next week. Any comment on what's the best OTC load for the 270 on deer, Va deer not the BIG ones from out West. Thanks for the replys!

get a sako in 243 and shoot one at a time , maybee even 2 if you can work the bolt fast.

I have a Bar Shorttrac 308 that shoots better than MOA with 150 grain Hornady SST's. Great handling deer gun. Light and better balanced than the old BAR's.

Can't exclude the magazines unless you want to inquire about a single-shot.. The pos magazines are the Achilles Heel of those rifles..

Durability's not known yet - too new... As with any semi-auto, you MUST keep them clean - especially the chamber..

Friend of mine bought one against my advice that he get the BAR instead.. Could never get it to feed right.. W/o the magazine it functioned perfectly.. He tried 2-3 mags (at $28 a pop) and finally called the big cheese at Rem.. The rifle was sent back, he got a check back, and he went and bought a BAR in .308.. Works perfectly and better still - he loves it..

There are dealers around here that won't stock the 750s... 'Nuff said there..

I have 4 magazines working and have went through the chamber trouble.

No more trouble so far - but frankly, I do not to much care for high maintainance rifles...

Prior to handloading for my rifles, my .270 BAR really loved Federal Premium 130g NBT. Couldn't tell how many deer and woodchucks fell or exploded to that bullet. Furthest shot on a deer with that bullet was approx. 250-300yds... 170lb. 7 pt didn't go the length of my truck.... but the best was a woodchuck lasered at 423yds ....ripped him/her in half good luck with your BAR...youre gonna love it. BTW i have a Zeiss Conquest 3x9 on my .300 and i LOVE that scope...better than any of my VXII or VXIII 's

My guns feeds out of any magazine I stick in it. One mag is 20 yrs old with pitting/rust on it and it still feeds.

Seems to me that people are just anti-Remington because of past issues regardless of the fact the 750 is completely different inside.

I have a Remington 7400. I bought it used and it took a lot of work to get it to shoot reliably. The few BAR owners I've spoken to seem to get this weird glazed over look in their eyes while they tell me the BAR is the greatest thing ever. Look them both up on the internet and you'll find that people with BAR's like them a lot.
