I may be the last camper to know this, and I may be shooting myself in the foot, but I am going to pass this on. In response to my e-mail concerning a Sako 85 Edge Tech stock, I received the following;

"Before we actually had to make a stock to fit the Sako 85 series, we had to have customers send us their rifles for fitting. Now we have a Sako Classic and Sako Hunter specifically made to fit all 85's. We will not need your rifle here now."

I am having a Sako 85 Classic stock on order on McMillan right now, for my Sako 85 Classic in 30-06 caliber.

But they asked me if I know what recoil lug size do I have in my Sako 85.
The problem is that I do not have my Sako 85 with me as it is on transit to the gunsmith.

Does anyone knows which recoil lug the Sako 85 Classic in 30-06 has? They seems to be two types...

There are at least 3 different lugs that I have seen. Unless they have changed the wood stocked ones, they are actually held onto the stock with 2 wood screws as well as the L shape. The factory synthetic just has a lug in an L shape that recesses into the stock.

When I got my EDGE, it was inletted for the wood stock lug, so I filled in the recess and milled out a new slot.

how does the edge stock measure up with an 85 in 338 federal? balanced? unbalanced? a little lively to shoot? lemme know if anyone has any info, I have an 85 with the laminate stock that shoots good, could be a goto rifle for everything if I could lighten it up a little.........

I put one on a Sako 75 SS in .308 Win. It did bring the weight down considerably. I currently have another order through our Gear Store for a Sako 85 Classic style stock for my 85 Finnlight .270 Win.

If you put a McMillan Edge Tech on your 85 Laminate, you will not believe the difference. I really don't consider the .338 Fed a heavy kicker, but if you are concerned about recoil have a one inch Pachmayr Decelerator installed by McMillan when you place your order. If most of your shots are no more than a couple hundred yards, I would think the 338 Fed would be fine with a McMillan Edge Tech stock. You will never want to put the laminate stock back on.

Does McMillan embed the lugs into the stock during the build process?

I am very interested in getting a Sako Hunter for a Sako 85 Finnlite & was wondering about the recoil lug set-up in a McMillan.

They likely would if you sent the lug to them. I just bedded my own.

I just had mine permenantly bedded into the stock on my 30-06 and still need to get the 25-06 in to have it bedded.

Love the McMillans on the Sako 85's though...well worth it.

I had it done by a gun smith after I received the stocks...I am not brave enough to try to bed a rifle in an expensive stock.

The 25-06 hasn't been bedded yet and it is deadly accurate as it is...

Hell I will give it a shot on explaining how they are in my Sako 75 and my 85 Finnlite. The recoil lugs are attached to the receiver and sit in two slots in the stock like a cross + the main lug cut out runs horizontal(across) and the less deep part of the lug runs vertical(with the barrel channel).
The 85 Finnlite is more difficult to explain. A flat piece of steel with a hole for the front bolt sits flat in the stock. In front of that flat piece of steel is a synthetic U shaped part of the stock that fits into a shallow cut out in the receiver. I believe that the 75 is a better made rifle, just my opinion. But it is heavier than an 85. So to make the rifle lighter you will not find as much steel. Being heavy has always been the the knock on Sako rifles. I do like the new ST stock on the Finnlite. I hope that I have not totally confused you. blargon had some good photos.
