I took my new kimber 308 win out for a quick range session out at the ranch yesterday, so i figured I would share the results.
I don't reload so I took out three different types of factory ammo for this first range session. The first three shots were to sight in the rifle and make scope adjustments, and then I decided to fire a couple of groups with the federal premium 165 gamekings. Three shots with no barrel cooling went just under an inch. Next I tried the Barnes vortex 150 ttsx and the gun did not like them near as much as they went about 2 inches at 100 yards. Last type of ammo tried was federal fusion 165 and they shot extremely well ranging from cloverleafs to just under an inch. Fusions shoot well in everything in my experience. The triggers on these rifles are great and really help in shooting such a light rifle. A 5lb 13oz rig with a fixed 6 scope is not the type of rifle you would expect great groups from at the bench but so far I am very pleased. I can't imagine a better mountain/backpack/carry rifle. Almost forgot to mention it feeds perfectly.

Interesting results, My .308 84m LOVES the Barnes 150gr. TTSX. shoots sub-m.o.a. Fusions were about 1" Hornady Superformance SST's were the worst with 2" groups.

my montana liked the fusion 165s but really shined with the 150 grain Fusion!

One more thing to add to my review, the edges of the bottom of the action are a little sharp and seem to scratch up the brass when loading from the magazine. I guess could take it apart and smooth out those edges, but since I dont reload its probably not that big of a deal. Im sure they will smooth out over time on there own with use. Has anyone else noticed this with new montanas or other rifles. Also I have noticed a few negitive comments about the polymer or plastic follower on these rifles, but to me its an improvment on this type of rifle. Its much lighter and should offer less friction than metal on metal. I'll admit that a plastic follower would look out of place on my Pre 64 but for the montana's I think it fits.
Mine puts a few small scratches on the brass. I think it's getting better though. Question for you and other 84M owners, if you cycle the bolt all the way back, does it grab a bit just as you start to push forward? Mine does if I have any amount of pressure pushing up on the bolt handle. As long as I push level, or with slight down pressure on the bolt handle it's very smooth. Occasionally gets me when cycling very quickly.
I've had scratches from Kimber, Remington, Ruger and Winchester. I always "polish" them up a little during the initial disassembly and cleaning. I use a really fine grit sandpaper on the bottom of the action. My goal is simply to ease the edge on the metal. Don't take too much though...
Thats probably due to the blade ejector and I think it will smooth out over time. I can get mine to do that as well, but i have to put upward pressure on the bolt. It has not been an issue in practice. The blade on the montana sticks out a bit further than on my model 70. Its kinda hard to compare the two actions smoothness, seeing as the pre 64 57 years old and has been cycled countless times. I do like the ejector on the model 70's better though.
Mine has a small groove around the bolt, just behind the lugs. It lines up with the back of the receiver when all the way back. That's part of it, but maybe not all of it.
