I'm one of those that has to have a "Wilderness Wandering" rifle on hand... for me that means a 308 or 30-06 with back-up iron sights and a scope set in detachable mounts.

I tried a wide variety of Weaver-type rings... none suited. Most are junk. The Leupold QRW's are nice, but I re-learned I don't really like them. Too bulky. The original Weaver's in Low and Medium both allowed the bolt handle to kiss the ocular.

Ended up back with Burris low Zee's over Warne Maxima Bases... they work, and mount a VX2/3 as low as is possible on the Kimber without the bolt handle kissing the ocular... they're lower than Talley Low's.

The other thing is the XS Sights Front Base is too high! Doesn't work with the NECG Masterpiece Rear Sight. Will be a simple fix to get a lower front base, but thought I'd pass that along for those that asked on a different thread. This setup worked on my M70 Fwt, but not on the Kimber.

Damn good thinking Brad. Good friend of mine fell down and busted his scope a couple weeks ago. Although I laughed when he told me, he didn't think was very funny when his rifle was rendered usless as a 190" buck he'd been watching all summer slowly walked off.. =)

I still have the 270 84L MT... likely going on the block soon. Shoots great, just happen to like the 84M better. Go figure.

Have an M70 30-06 Fwt SS incoming... my winter project rifle (like I don't have enough on my plate).

Definitely one of those "different strokes for different folks" things.

Some "get" open sights, some don't. You obviously "don't."

Going with necg sights on a sako 75 ss .308 project this winter...not likely any scope though...

Brad brings up a good point,sorta driven home to me yesterday at the range by one of our Match shooters.

I had a pre 64 M70 FW 270 in an Edge on the bench;he looked as he walked past,did a double take and said..."Hey,that's a pre 64! Where's the wood stock? That ain't Old School!"

I told him I had another at home with wood, which kept him happy...

He says "I like the sights"....I said yeah the scope works good and he responded..."No, I like the irons...."

I haven't used them in years....shame on me!

I am a fan of good irons as well. I wonder how many rifles out there so equipped have never had theirs dialed in?

Very nice. I'm a big fan of back up iron sights on a hard use rifle. Did the sights help push the balance point a bit further forward?

I don`t have a Kimber MT but I wanted a all around rifle set up like yours and I subscribe to the K.I.S.S principle.
So I got a Ruger 77 RSI stainless 7mm-08,
Already has the factory open sights,Factory rings that can be detached easy,open sights work well up close here in Alabama.
I may swap out the Mannlicher wood stock for some sort of synthetic to make it more weatherproof.
A oldstyle "Boat Paddle" Ruger factory stock would really work well.

That looks great. I've always wanted an all-weather rifle with irons and the 84M is about perfect for that. One more way to save a hunt.

after knocking my scope out of whack for the second time this season this is looking like an even better idea
