Nice rifle but I would commision a build before paying what they want for one of those.

True, but there is no reason it has to be your own.

As my FIL used to say, "If you have to ask how much, you can't afford it."

I guess the lack of a quoted price is not a good sign for most of us...

No problem, they're not doing me any good anyway. Yep, lack of a price list is of most concern. Not even a "Price available upon request". Surely it wouldn't be as much or more than a Cooper.

It even has the Rigby aperture sight on the bolt. Very cool. If you want to see what the comparable Wesley Richards would cost, just go to the WR site, click on "Build Your Own", and go from there. The basic WR (98 Mauser) is 16,500 pounds. That's about $27,715 at today's exchange rate. And you can begin to add on from there. A tad more than a Cooper, but I expect Ingwe will have to get one chambered in .275 Rigby some day. It'd make a heck of a pig gun, and he could even use the same ammo that he uses in his Fwt. Here's the link if you want to see it. http://www.westleyrichards.com/new-guns/bolt-action-rifles

Don't know your financial situation, but for ordinary folks, a good look at the price tag on that little gem will cool you down in a hurry.

A little bit of lurking on Gunbroker might yield a very nice FN deluxe sporter for probably a third or less of what that one would cost you. I don't recall any 7X57s lately, but .270s, '06s, and even .257s show up pretty often. If you squint your eyes a little, the .270 might pass for a 7mm.

Yeah, looking at that site cools me down quite a bit.

I'm more in the "build it yourself" class, although I've traded for some pretty nice guns over the years.

Here's my version of a '98 Mauser, a '50's vintage FN action fitted with a 23" Shilen #2 in a B&C Medalist. That's about where I stand on the '98 Mauser deal. May have to let the high end one pass... smile

I have less than $1,200 in this gun, a 6.5x55. I'm pretty sure $1,200 wouldn't make a down payment on the "real deal" Mauser '98.

Those are some of the most gorgeous rifles I've seen...pure sex!! Well, I could afford it but it's my policy not to ever spend over $2500 for any rifle. Closest thing to that price has been the JOC Deluxe Tribute rifle and a Shiloh Sharps 45-90.

still, like most, I'm a great admirer of fine weapons and those are the creme' de la creme'. Now, if I were Donald Trump I'd have a safe full of them.
Posted By: Dirtfarmer Re: 98 Mauser 7x57 - 06/06/14
The Trump boys did go on a major African Safari, elephant, buf, etc. Took some really nice trophies.

Do a word search on Trump+sons+Safari.

Looks like they had synthetic stocks on their rifles, nothing like the new Mauser 98.

This is probably just another needless correction, but the 98 Mauser action was originally designed around the 7.9257mm Mauser cartridge (more commonly called the 8 MM Mauser).

And yes I understand that the cartridge lengths are the same so there is no need to have you bother going into a lot of extra detail to fill me in.

BTW - a 1909 Argentine 98 action in 7X57 is a great action to build a custom rifle from.
Posted By: EdM Re: 98 Mauser 7x57 - 06/07/14
I am rather fond of the 7x57 built on the smaller Swede action myself. A Jim Wisner/Dean Zollinger piece.

Posted By: Craigster Re: 98 Mauser 7x57 - 06/07/14
BTW - 1909 Argentine 98 actions were not in 7X57. They were 7.65X53 Belgian Mauser, but the Argies decided to add a milimeter and call it X54. Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and the Turks also used it.

Just reread my sentence. What I was trying to say is that an 09 Argentine action makes for a great 7X57 custom rifle which I had built. I bought two plain un-barreled 09 actions for $50 each in a pawn shop about 15 years ago. The other action is still as I bought it waiting to become something.
Posted By: Craigster Re: 98 Mauser 7x57 - 06/07/14
Yes, the '09s are nice for custom builds. I put one together in 257 Roberts. Unfortunately, they are getting harder to find these days and they aren't getting any cheaper.
Posted By: PJGunner Re: 98 Mauser 7x57 - 06/07/14
I built my .280 Rem, on a 1909 Argie. My favorite though is a J.C. Higgins M50 action that I built a nice looking and very accurate 7x57. coolI've decided I may use one of either of those two on my next elk hunt.

No where did I say originally and the statement I made was and is correct. The 7X57 was chambered for all the Mauser variants, including the M98. My comment was in reguards to another comment made by another poster that the 7X57 is too short for the M98. It isn't and I thought a simple one sentence reply would suffice, apparently not. Further more .30-06 length cartridges will not fit in a lot of M98 actions without deep seating because the the bottom metal was designed for **X57 cartridges, INCLUDING the 7X57. That's one of the things that made them so reliable and gave them the reputation they have today is the magazine box was designed for a particular cartridge for that rifle. Winchester did the samething in thier Pre-64 model 70. That's one of the reasons high end builds get new bottom metal. If you want the most reliable feeding from your M98 and you are changing cartridges, it's a wise move to change the bottom metal with a box that's designed for that class cartridge and it's stacking geometry, not just longer. It's not just for looks, it's also a functional upgrade.

The 7X57 is not too short for the standrd M98 action. It would be a great choice.

I've got two Mauser 98's in 7X57. Both are smallrings but still 98's. It's one of my all time favorites.

You guys sure make a guy envious...real green! TC1-that's quite a balancing act on those first two pics!

IIRC, Eleanor O'Connor's favorite 7mm Mauser was built on the 98 action. Either way, it's a fine cartridge regardless the action.
