Trying to decide if I should keep my fn made Winchester 70 ult shadow in 308 and drop some money into it for trigger work and better stock or trade even for an interarms mark x mauser already in a good synthetic with a trigger job. No really concerned about resale value just interested in opinions as to which is a better tool.

Also my other big game rifle is an interarms mark x and thought familiarity might be a benefit when swapping between guns
I'd consider the trade as long as they are about equally accurate and I wouldn't have to invest a lot in new dies and components.

Which one do you LIKE?
Depends on if you're sticking to a 308 or not. If you get a 308 in the Mark X then it's still going to be a long action, your M70 is a short action.

All things considered I think I'd put a good trigger and stock on the M70 & keep it.
Probably keep the M70. Big difference in market value. Gussie it up a little as you can.

This +1
Not sure what your experience has been, but I've never handled a Mark X that was as smooth as any Model 70 I've ever handled. I'd put money into the Model 70 before I'd consider a Mark X for any purpose.

Keep the M70...
Keep the M 70 and buy the Interarms. wink
Myself, I'd keep the Winchester. But it's a toss-up according to what you like best.

Only you can make this decision....
For me to be happy, I gotta have a rifle that feels good in my hands and one that handles well, shoulders easily, and points in the right direction when shouldered...

I've bought a number of rifles that felt good in the store, but when I mount a scope, hang a sling, and fill the mag they aren't so awesome anymore...

If you can spend some shooting time with both rifles, pick the one that you most like to shoot...
Interarms sold so I am keeping model 70 and picking up a extreme weather stock
For me, I'd keep the Model 70, but as BSA said " only you can make this decision".

Sounds right. The Interarms Mausers are excellent rifles but often undervalued, maybe because they aren't understood for what they are. I think you'll do better in the long run with the M70.

d.
I have three FN made Mausers from around the late fifties to early sixties. they are indeed fine rifles. The Interarms are just as strong, they just stopped short on polishing the insides. I have bought several Interarms Mk X, but I never kept one. They just don't stack up well with my FN made rifles.

jack
jack - you be right. They aren't FNs. I'm an FN junkie.
The recent Zastava Mauser copies are less polished still compared to the MkX. I have two and have owned four of them. They do slick up very well with use however and all mine have been moa accurate and functioned flawlessly.

Your M70 is probably the way I'd go due to the 308/short action combo.

Make sure you can live with the factory EW stock before you buy it. Your money may be better spent on a Mcmillan hunters compact edge or Bansner (High tech specialties) stock. I never cared for the EW stock. I don't like the ergo's or slickness of it in adverse conditions either. They just feel blocky/bulky and heavy to me. YMMV of course...
