We all know that comparing the Ruger American to a Tikka is a bit of a joke so let's have a real discussion comparing two rifles that are worth comparing.

The Marlin has my vote between these two rifles. Less money for the same value and 100 yd groups are comparable.

Here's my thoughts in this thread:

I'm with fotis, there's a few calibers that they should change the twist on, IMO.

There's nothing wrong with the Marlin. I like the Ruger over the Tikka, but I'm interested in seeing what Winchester comes up with.

I bought two Marlins for cheap guns and gave one to the kids. They were both seriously accurate hunting rifles. My buddies were so impressed they bought them for their kids too. I wouldn't hesitate for a second to buy another if the price were right or to recommend them to others.

I think the Ruger has a better feeling stock.
Yep, Marlins are pretty good for the money. The JM stamp barrels are best though.
My marlin shoots really tiny groups and I like the ergonomics of the marlin better. I also like it takes savage barrels and now I can get bolt heads for the 783 that supposedly work on the marlin. Opens up a lot of options.
Sample of one. But the Marlin XL7 I bought for the grand daughter is very accurate. Still waiting to get hands on experience with a LH RAR .223 in 8 twist.
Pick whichever feels best.

FWIW, I'm now on my 3rd X7, and have been more than pleased with all of them.

They shoot OK:

Watch using Savage barrels because the bolt face on the x series is deeper than on a savage, I did a 6.5x55 Swede build and had the trim the breach face some to head space it.

I have an example of each.... give me the Marlin any day over the Ruger...

YOU ARE the only thing that is MORE than a joke.

Your blatant incompetence to ALL things rifle related is nothing short of amazing.....
Why don't you show us some pics of the Marlins, Savages, Tikkas, and Americans you own and have shot verifying said conclusions?

I'm waiting.......

so....you have a gun that shoots well, and you plan on swapping barrels and boltheads?
by 783 do you mean the remington rifle?
I know it is crazy to start tinkering with a good shooting gun, but that was why I bought it. I wanted a gun I could use to learn how to change barrels using a barrel but system and liked this one over the savage. I have changed the barrels several times and have seen very good accuracy with both the original 243 tube and a savage 308 barrel I used for reduced loads (30-30 bullets out of the 308 at 2100fps). With the savage 308 barrel I did not have to do any trimming, but based off my measurements using a go gauge it was close. I have a PTG 223 bolt head for the rem 783 on the way to see if it will work as talked about over on the marlin owners forum. I really want to run a 6x45mm in a marlin and am going to play with this receiver before I buy a new one.

My 8 year old daughter once said....

Daddy, why do people try to teach you something twice if you already know it.

Folks on the Campfire already know this schit slick just like we all knew Marlin would win by a landslide!

THIS is the only thing folks on the Campfire already know.

You seem awful hung up on budget rifles. Got any good rifles?

Come on genius!

The thread is Ruger American VS Marlin

Post your opinion and then proceed to tell everyone who posted on the thread how incredibly stupid they are because they posted contrary to you!

Trying to decide between the two right now for the wife in 243. I'm kinda leaning toward the Marlin.
I m sure either will work out fine.
I picked up a Marlin 243 last year for a friend of mine as her first rifle. She used factory loads last year but I worked up a 95NBT load for her this year. After shooting that little rifle for a little while, the Marlin 243 currently in the classified is very tempting!!

I like the stock on the Marlin way better than the Ruger, its much stiffer
Don't wait too long to buy. It sounds like the geniuses at remington decided to kill the x7. Should kill the ugly 783 and take the marlin as their own.
Niece has a Marlin - outstanding accuracy. She is 8 for 8 with it on deer using Remington 140 reduced recoil loads.
Ruger American.

The only X7 I had would need a bottle of Viagra to kick out a case.
I hae never seen a Marlin stocked in a store to compare against. It seems like remington keeps it from the big retailers around me to hide their shame they cant make a budget rifle like that.

I would have to default to ruger based on availability...
I really like the look's of wood stocked Ruger's, the Ruger American is one ugly gun though. Friend has a Marlin in 250-3000, very nice gun, I;d own one of them!
