I hear a lot of complaints about the thick forened on the EW, but haven't read much about the plastic stock on the Ultimate Shadow. What are your thoughts on Ultimate Shadow stock and which one would you prefer? Also, would you only buy these two rifles in a short action?
The b and c is solid but portly. The ultimate shadow stock on my 6.5x55 is a little flimsy in the fore end but slim. The short action is noticeably smoother then the long action.
Check out the montana rifle company thread a few posts down. Pretty similar to a M70 and many consider it better in some ways.
I've owned a EW in 270. I shot it offhand better than any rifle I've ever owned. Yes it is heavier to carry all day than I like and yes the stock is thicker than I prefer. I regret selling that rifle.

I've handled several short action EW's and I found them to be a bit more trimmed down. Not much tho. And maybe I'm wrong maybe they aren't a bit more slim. I'd love to stumble across an EW in 7mm-08 on day my wallet was heavy..

Honestly, to me they aren't comparable. EW all the way..

I have the ultimate shadow stock on a M70 SS rifle currently. I could not be more pleased with the way it feels and points. My rifle is a NH gun in 270 WSM
I prefer the Ultimate Shadow stock, even if they were selling at the same price. It is lighter, trimmer, has a better recoil pad and they shoot exactly the same.

+1. The ultimate shadow stock is the duratouch and the EW is a B&C, it's a damn shame that one is supposed to be better than the other, but the other has better feel/ergonomics. Plus it's less expensive. Tell me again, which one is "better". I would choose the duratouch over the crappy EW B&C medalist any day of the week and twice on sunday if push came to shove. The funny thing about it is, that stock is only worth about $50.00 on a good day...:

But still better than the FN medalist...That thing is a fat pig... The first thing I did when I got my 30-06 EW was replace the B&C with a much more suitable stock:

I had this stock before I had the rifle and guess how long it was before the B&C got tossed??? Just sayin..
Too bad you don't want one in 30-06. I'm about to list an ultimate shadow ss.
I had an ultimate shadow in .308, and really liked it. Being a lefty, I traded it for a lefty sps and have regretted it ever since. That was one righty I should have hung on to. The action was butter smooth and it was a 1" shooter.

I have a 300 WSM in the new Extreme Weather with the white splatter finish. After some polishing to "slick up" the action, I now have a new favorite Rifle. I personally like the feel of the stock other than the short radius of the pistol grip. I used to have an Ultimate Shadow but I thought the stock was a bit too thin feeling for me. The upside to that is that it made it a lot handier when wearing thick gloves when hunting.
Is there a way to tell which Shadow stocks have the DuraTouch finish? Some did and some didn't IIRC.
No contest for me on this decision I'd go with the Ultimate Shadow hands down, the Blocky B&C stock on the EW is the worst feeling factory stock I have ever had the displeasure of handling..............Good luck.......Hb
I have had both, and my opinion differs from most of the others. But I do have XL hands, so thinner stocks feel like toys to me honestly. I like the B&C ok (not my favorite), but not the plastic ones, Duratouch included - have replaced everyone with McM's myself. The B&C is much better quality wise, no doubt about that.

For perspective, I have one McM Edge like BSA posted above (and most folks like/love) but it's on a Rem Model Seven - feels right on that rifle to me, but had one on a M70 and it just felt too small to me personally.

It's really a personal decision so I'd recommend trying both to see how they feel if at all possible.

DakotaDeer - the Duratouch was on the Ultimate Shadows. An all black "Duratouch" looking stock came on Super Shadows, but was all plastic not Duratouch. This was true at least until a few years ago, haven't kept up with Win's latest stuff.
Did they change the stock style on the EW's somwehat recently?

I had somewhat of an itch to get one in 243 for coyote

however I saw a used on in 25-06 a few months ago that seemed to me to have a mighty skinny stock on it. turned me off.

maybe it was an aftermarket stock I am not sure.

I have not been able to find a vendor around here with new model 70's of any flavor to examine to see if I think it might work

I do know I am beyond tired of the extremely poor workmanship and quality control in the last 4 Rem 700's I bought and am not fooling with them anymore.
