I see posts, where some folks will have like 20+ rifles. When do you get the time to shoot the all? laugh Of the rifles you have what calibers do you shoot the most, be it target shooting or hunting.
Lots of people have 20 rifles in one caliber. They don't shoot them all.
This year I have used 4 rifles and 4 cartridges for hunting. (CF)

Most of my hunting is done with my model 70 FWT 25-06.

I occasionally carry my HR/Sako .222 for coyotes.

On one day deer hunting I carried a new to me model 70 .300 holland, just to say I took a deer with it.

And on one afternoon I took my old model 700 .17 Rem out calling coyotes...
.22, .243, .284. are the calibers I run most. 7/08 and .280 Rem mostly and building a 7mm Mashburn Super. I'll likely not own anything larger than .284 caliber anymore. When the mashburn is done there is nothing I hunt that won't die nicely via the 160 grain Partition and at any distance I'm likely to shoot.
Winter: .22/250 AI or Swift- / along with either a .25-06 or .270 for coyotes.. .22 mag. or Hornet for cottontails and fox. I always take two rifles some times three or four rifles. days..

Spring / summer- .22 lr. 22mag. 222 and 223 for gophers.. A hot .22 for general varmints.. The .222 and .223 and sometimes the hot .22's are used on p. dogs just because I like to shoot them.

Last fall I used my .22-250 AI on two antelope, and the .25/06 on the buck..
Mulie was taken with my old .300 WM.
elk was taken with .375 H & H
moose taken with .375 H & H
Wy. whitetail .25-06
two meat does on the east coast 7mm-08..

This fall who knows.. the .300 will get some use for sure.. Otherwise it depends on my whim at the time.. Right now I am considering my late wife's 7mm Rem. Mag. for antelope buck, a lever action for one doe, most likely the .25-35. and maybe the .44 pistol for my other doe. Beyond that haven't considered the other hunts.. One thing for sure, if I just owned one or two rifles, I know I would not enjoy hunting as much as I do.. But that is just me.. I like firearms, rifles first, shotguns second, pistols third..

Probably 38-40 and 44-40 for the most rounds of ammunition as I have 7 or 8 guns in 38-40 and 8 or 10 in 44-40. Cowboy action eats up quite a few rounds in those cartridges.

Most calculated shooting/hunting would go to the 222 Mag, I have 5 of those. You can never have enough...

I don't have 20 just a few good ones that I use most of the time.
I have whittled my inventory down to 223's, 22/250's, 243's and a 7x57.

All my hunting anymore is varmint (gopher to wolf) so the 7x57 doesn't get used but I hang on to it just in case I decide to take up big game hunting again. 90% of the time I have one of my 223's with me, the next most used one is one of the 22/250's, next is one of the 243's, and my 7x57 just lives it's lonely existence in the dark corner of the safe.

drover
I have probably 15 or so rifles and most get used, though not always in any given year.

My .25-06 I used quite a bit this past season for 3 antelope and a mulie buck. It is at the gunsmith right now being worked on.

I also killed a mulie with my .307 Win this year, but that's a rifle that normally stays in the safe. I guess I just wanted to try something different this year.

I hunted elk quite a bit with the .25-06 and .340 Wby, but never shot one this last year.

.22LR and .270 Win...
.223AI and 5.56 by a wide margin.

Between the kids and I we have
.243
.270
7x57
280 AI
30'06
300 wsm
300 H&H
375 H&H
most used .270
.22LR and 7/08. And... .223. And then I need my lever actions in .22 mag, 32-20, .357 and .30-30.
Here is what I have currently:

  • .264 - 6.5x57
  • .308 - 30-06 (3)
  • .338 - 330 Dakota
  • .358 - 35 Whelen
  • .366 - 9.3x62
  • .375 - 375 Ruger

Seem to always grab one of the Springfields first. Hopefully headed to Namibia later this year and am leaning towards taking the 9.3.
I have quite a few rifles that I never use or hunt with.

My favorite HUNTING rifles are;

- 204 Ruger in a Savage 116 for varmints
- 240 PSP in a Flaig's of Pittsburgh Mauser for antelope
- 7mm-08 in a NULA for deer
- 7x57 in a CLR/Nula for deer
- 300 WSM in a Kimber Montana for elk

donsm70
22 LR
223 aka 5.56
250-3000
6.5x55
280
7x61 Sharpe & Hart
358 Win.
35 Whelen
The Whelen, Swede, and 250 for stuff bigger than a coyote. Oh, the S&H has taken the last 2 elk.:)
The 22 cal.s for every thing else!
I have rifles from 22 rim fire through .50 center fire. i shoot 22-250 and 308 win the most.
577 Snider
I have over 600 rifles, most of which I have never shot and probably won't. I have probably shot 150+/- different rifles during the past three years, keep 100+/- scoped and ready to go, but probably don't shoot more than 50+/- during any twelve month period. Those that I shoot the most are 17HM2, 17HMR, 22LR, 22Mag, 204Ruger, 223, 22-250, 243, 6BR, 25WSSM, 257Roberts, 257AI, 25-06, 260, 6.5Creedmoor, 6.5x55, 270, 7x57, 280, 7mmSAUM, 7.62x39, 30-30, 308, 30-06, and 8x57.

I would guess that 9 time out of 10, I have regretted selling or trading a firearm within a short time of doing so, so I just buy what I want and seldom sell or trade.

Sort of a Hotel California philosophy,

"Relax, said the night man, we are programmed to receive, you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave."

I keep firearms and hunting kit in Colorado, New Hampshire, and South Dakota so that I don't have to fly with a lot of hunting kit or firearms.
my 30-06 Carbine rem 700 and rem 700 300 WBY tie for most carried.
Next up are my 350 rem mag and 375 Ruger Alaskan.
Just for fun I have a 6mm Remington 700 that I shoot 65 v-maxes out of.

I also just added a Tikka T-3 Super Lite, i'm sure it will see some carry time this fall.

My wife shoots a 300 WSM.

My two little kids shot the heck out of a couple of pop cans today with a Savage Rascal the neighbor gave to them. What a great afternoon.
Sounds awesome bigsweede. Let's see what I have now....1 338 win mag... That's all 1 man needs...

I won't tell you everything I have, just what I use the most...

1. 30-06
2. 9.3x62mm
3. 338 win mag...

No specific order because they will work on everything I hunt..
.223, .243, .257, .264, .284, .308.

I like to shoot them all.

For deer, I like the .264's, long distance I like the fast .257's and .308's.
Well, after that darned boat accident, I gots nuttin'. frown wink

Before that, I used .22lr > .284 > .308 > .223 > .358 > .257 > .338

FC
Marlin 336 in .30-30, Ruger M77 Ultralight in .250 Savage, Ruger No.1B in .30-'06, Browning A-Bolt II in .257 Roberts, and a Ruger No.1 Tropical in .375 H&H...

They all get used about the same amount, except for the .375.

The other four, I shoot a couple of times a week, generally.
In order of use (top 4)

1. 22lr
2. .270 Win
3. .308 Win
4. .300 Win Mag
.257-06 caliber.
We've got a 25-35, 30-30, and a couple of 30-06's. My brother likes the 25-35 and I usually hunt with a 30-06.
I own several rifles but The only calibers I own are 22lr.........223Rem..........300 WM.......and a 45-70 for the occasional Ohio gun hunt.........Hb
Had 5 rifles at the range today:

.22 LR, Ithaca Model 49 lever / single shot
Had a blast shooting clay pigeons at 100 yards, iron sights.

.223, Ruger MKII
Shooting several different loads for group as well as clays at 100.

.300 Blackout, S&W M&P15
Testing 208g A-MAX sub-sonic loads.

.308 Win, Ruger Scout
Testing 208g A-MAX full power loads.

.280 Rem, Ruger Hawkeye All-Weather
Shooting several different loads for group in anticipation Daughter #1 or I will use it this fall for elk.

Over the years my 7mm RM has had far more use than all my other rifles put together - simply because for 20+ years it was my only centerfire bolt gun. These days I have quite a few to choose from and unblooded rifles generally step the head of the line when it comes time to choose. In the last few years I've killed more with various .30-06 rifles than any other cartridge.

When I was 11 I had some money saved up and bought an old Rem 700 ADL in 30-06 from one of the ole-timers my grandpa worked with. I still have that one, but life would have been way simpler if I would have never owned another another big game rifle. Mind you not as fun, just WAY simpler.
I have few different calibers but just added a Tikka T3 lite in .223 and did a few improvements. I replaced the factory stock with a Bell and Carlson Medalist, replaced the bolt handle and shroud with Atlasworxs stainless. Replaced the plastic trigger guard with an Atlasworxs aluminium original TiKka T3 Guard that drops right in and takes the factory magazines, added a Bradley adjustable cheek rest, an Atlas bipod and top it off with a Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x50 scope with Warne rings. Now got to get to the range to site it in.

This year we killed big game with the following:

6mm Rem
264 WM
280 Rem
30-06

This was the first time I've hunted with a 30-06 in nearly 40 years. It worked as well as any of the others.
This past year I spent the most time with a 222 and 270.

This year I plan to spend most of my time with a 222 and 270.
243 for varmints and 270 for deer
Ive been selling off lots of rifles and getting down to just a couple. I have a 22-250 for coyotes. I have a lightweight 308 and 270 for the majority of my hunting. I go back and forth fighting a battle in my head that I need to sell one and just keep the other. I love the 270 because it is fairly flat shooting. I love the 308 because it is a short action, very light, and with modern 180 grain bullets it can damn near do anything I want.

And then.....there is my .35 Whelen. I LOVE the .35 Whelen. I don't NEED it at all. A 308 or 30-06 or even the 270 will in all reality do everything I need, but damn I love the Whelen. It just thumps game. That is how my dad describes it. He says you shoot game with other rounds, you thump them with the Whelen. Maybe it is just psychological, but everything I shoot with it seems to drop like a sack a bricks. There is just something about that big 35 caliber bullet that just works.
223,243,7mm/08,308,30~06.

During deer season the 7mm/08 gets carried the most.
In the off season the 223 gets carried most of the time or the 20" barreled 243.
"...use the most."

My uber cool truck gun, 221 fuzzball.

Pretty much all I hunt with anymore is some flavor of 338 caliber. I have some smaller stuff I don't use anymore and sometimes in bad weather or heavy woods I pull out a 45-70 for close range work.

Since I am retired, I try to make time each year to shoot as many as possible. I like to know they are sighted in and ready to go. I have a bunch of Mausers that are chambered for fun chamberings I wanted when I was a kid and a bunch of older style weapons I again wanted as a kid. I usually shoot a couple of them a lot. I like to develop loads and it is simpler with rifles I don't hunt with much. This year it will be a 6.5x55 carbine-17.5" barrel and a 7x61 S&H on a commercial 98 action-26" medium heavy barrel. My old style project will be an 1885 Browning in .45-70.

In order of use (top 5)
1. 22lr
2. .223/5.56x45
3. .30-06
4. .338 Win Mag
5. .22 Mag
For about 5-7 years, the ONLY rifle I used, other than for predator calling was my .257 Wby. I killed everything with that. Elk, deer, javelin, fox, bobcat, coyotes, antelope, African animals etc. That rifle is like an extension of my arm.

Then, after years of dedicated service, that rifle went to schit accuracy wise, and my 7 LRM was ordered. Ross, Azshooter helped me debug my 257 and now it is shooting 5 shout groups of 110 Accubonds under an inch.

My 7 LRM will now get the majority of the work as it was too damn expensive and too nice of a rifle with too nice of a scope to leave in the safe.

It kills me to leave my Kimber 300 WSM in the safe. The rifle is absolutely a hammer, dependable and accurate. Every time. I just have very little use for it, and I would sell it if it was not the gun I bought for Africa.
The rifles I keep coming back to and the ones that get carried in the bush the most are a Ruger Ultralight tang safety in .250 Savage, a Ruger Hawkeye .257 Roberts, another Ruger Ultralight in .308 and a Ruger No.1A in 7x57.

I have a few other rifles that are probably nicer like my Brno 601 .30-06 with custom stock, a Sako Grizzly in 8x57 and a .280 Rem with HS Precision stock but the four above rifles are the ones that I seem to reach for the most. I have a .25-06 but it hardly ever gets a run as my Roberts does all I want with 100gn bullets in .25 cal. I also have a No.1 in .303B and am about to purchase another No.1 in 9.3x62 but really I already know that when I want to hunt with a No.1, I'll be reaching for the 7x57 most of the time.

And it just occurred to me that the four rifles I hunt with the most are all Rugers.
Way too many to count and the m7 ss 7-08 gets the most use followed by an old adl 243 and a slew of 270's. Killed deer with 7 different guns in last 2 seasons smile
scouttracker,

I have a .223 which is sometimes used for varmits. I have two(2).375's. One (my first) a box-stock Win. model 70, the other a semi-custom .375AI on Win. Model 70 action. The .375AI has been my "ONLY" hunting rifle since 1989. There are a few other rifles in the safe, just there for ballast!!! memtb
Shrapnel, you elevate suck to a very lofty level indeed.

Friend of mine owned a Lightning for a time then sold it behind my back. It wasn't a .44-40 or anything really cool, but I still think he keeps a .270 in the closet just because, well, those are one of the niftiest things Colt ever put together. Why on God's green earth would one sell a perfectly functional and accurate Lightning?

[Linked Image]

Second place might be a SAA.

Double Suck if there ever were.

I shoot .22 shorts a lot. In fact I got blood on my flip flops a couple days back on account of shorts. It's Florida...flip flops in winter.....check.
I shoot a ton of .22LR all summer and to a lesser extent 308 and 30-06.
22 lr
.223
6.5 creedmoor primary hunting gun
6.5 creedmoor (truck gun)
6.5x284
280 AI
12 guage

I use the 6.5 creedmoor the most when hunting and shooting paper.
I mainly use three calibers (4 guns):
243
25-06
7mm-08

Soon as the 358 Winchester gets back, I'll use it just for grins.
I have a variety of .22 rimfire rifles; .45, .50, and .54 caliber BP rifles; and a good mix of centerfire rifles from .224 to .375 caliber. I shoot and hunt with my .300 Weatherby the most.
.264
.284
.308
.323
.338

JAPPF,

GWB
I use and shoot a .223/.223AI more than anything else, probably more than everything else combined (excluding rimfire). After the .223's would be .308's. The .223's and .308's do a lot of hunting as well. I hunt with a lot of different calibers but don't spend nearly as much time shooting them...the .223 and .308 calibers send the most lead down range.
My 7mm rifles get used more than any of the others (7-08, 280 Rem and 7mm Rem Mag), followed by the .277 stuff (Win and WSM), then probably a tie between .223 and .243 (22-250 and 243 Win).
Top use and hunting in no particular order:

Savage 12 in 308

Remington 700 in 300WM

Remington 700 in 308

CZ 452 in 22lr

S&W 629 4 inch barrel in 44 mag (just because I love it)
.260 for the prairie hunting , .243 is always in the truck regardless of season.
Will be doing a lot of shooting with a rem 700 308 and a browning 71 in 348 win.

Mm
As far as what rifle I "use" the most, I would say my rolling block in 40-65 that I use in Schuetzen matches. For big game this year I used a 256 Newton, 250 Savage, and a 30 Newton. For calling coyotes I have been using boring old 222 Rem.
Deep in 7mm at the moment but having .30 cal withdrawals.
I don't enjoy typing that much...

I will say that .223, .260 and .308 were carried the most in 2014.
Sako A7 -243
BRNO 22F-8x57
REM 700- 7-08
This is what got used the most this year.
I mean last year.
I've been fire forming a lot of .223 lately and playing with .223AI loads. That .223AI will put a guy in tall cotton. After that it's .270 then .243 by a margin. I will have a .243AI before too long and hope to retire the .270 for the time being. I can only shoot 30-40 rounds a week and my bum shoulder is acting up. Time to change things a bit so I can shoot more.
22LR, .223, 30-06, 12 gauge, others are available, and are used, but these are the primary now, and always has been.

BSA, Didn't Ingwe convince you to sell those awhile back to exclusively use your 270 WCF or do I have you confused with someone else?
22lr, 7mm Rem Mag, 7-08
Well this year during our deer season I carried a 25-06, .308, two different 30-06's, a 338-06 and a 35 Whelen and I enjoyed each and every one.

The .308 was carried the most because it was a new to me Kimber Montana and I wanted to harvest a deer with it, but unfortunately no shooter bucks were available on the days I had it.
I carried my 54 cal flint lock first this year and actually missed a nice young buck at about 60 yards down through the swamp. First deer I've missed with that rifle. I guess I'm going to have to put an ivory bead on the front sight. Low light in the swamp is not always easy. The eyes aren't what they were. I carried my 30/06 the most but ended up the season shooting a nice buck with my 44 mag Marlin.

.358

My 22s and 25s get most of the use, but I'm really warming up to 6mm's. Killed my first deer with my 240Wby this year and I've been shooting the 243Win a good bit lately.
Most used:
375 Ruger
338 Win Mag

To be put into use this year:
416 Ruger
All the above are Ruger stainless steel rifles.

I have more than 20, but I usually pick one or two rifles to focus on each hunting season. Right now I'm trying to pick which ones I want to load and practice with for the fall.

It's kinda like getting a new rifle every year - some of these I haven't shot in a few years, so it like a new one to me grin
I have maybe 15 rifles but generally only shoot 4:

My favorite hunting rifles are chambered for .257 AI & 30-06; my favorite cartridges for shooting are 223 & 6-250.

Rifles carry more weight than cartridge in my consideration of a hunting rifle; when shooting its cartridge first.

I shoot the 223, 260, and 308, in that order. With a side dose of 280. And if I'm off my meds long enough, the 30-06 comes out.

Kaiser Norton
300 SAvage. Got two, at 1955 99F and a 1939 99K. I shoot them both and have harvested deer with them. I love old guns.

"A full dinner pail and no fast 'twists'"

The first bill of order would be arming the military with superior munitions; the 5.56x45 would be replaced with the 5.56x47 and concurrent AR's would have a longer receiver and longer OAL magazines....contracts would be issued to both foreign and domestically held companies, with import tariffs if applicable.

All presently issued arms and ammunition and components would be sold at discounted rates through the CMP.

I will be present to award the President's Cup....
Most used in the last 12 months:

I crave experience with different cartridges, so I hunt deer with different rifles. These currently include 7x57, 45-70, 30-30, 280, 35 Whelen, 375 H&H, 30-06, 308, and 6.5x55. Handguns include 22 LR, 44 mag, and 45 Colt. Next year I hope to include 30 Army (aka 30-40 Krag) as I recently procured a Ruger #3 so chambered. Also have a 35 Rem that has yet to be blooded. So many rifles, so little time. smile
.308 and .223 get used the most. Magnums don't come out very much any more.

Which ones do you hunt with?

Shod
I have four 30-06 rifles and don't even like the cartridge.
I hunt with the 35 Whelen.

LOL, flip a coin.
I've had a lot of different rifles of varying cartridges and still do but the only ones that get seriously used are the two 270s and I'm dealing on a third one.......prolly sell off all those other orphan rifles.
I have pretty much every caliber from .177 to .458 and use my .257s and .264s the most (after the 22LR).

PennDog
Based on round count it has to be a 22 LR by a long shot (pun intended).
I have the following:
223
30-30
25-06
*7mm-08
*300 Win Mag
*358 Win
9.3x62
45-70

*Use the most

Target shooting, mostly these:
.22 long rifle
.223/5.56 AR-15
.308 Win

Hunting, last few years mostly:
.25-06
.375 H&H

I hunt bears with the .375 because it's doggone fun, not because that powerful a rifle is needed. Love that Number One! The .25-06 is my mule deer/pronghorn/coyote rifle, and gets used the most afield.

Regards, Guy
I really like 6mm's

For bigger critter, I like a decent 6.5 or 7mm
Have and use:
280AI
270, 308,7-08,30-06,223
22LR, 30-30, 30-06

Without a doubt .224....From .221 Fireball to 22-250 AI......In all reality a hot fast twist .224 will cover 90% of my hunting needs...................Handily!

X-VERMINATOR
I'm to the point of thinning calibers, but not necessarily rifles. I might add as truly needed, but between 22LR, 223, 243, 6.8, 7x57, 30-30, 308, 30-06, 356, & 358....most with several dif rifles, for dif uses, I have enought dif ammo to try and fool with. My 243, 7x57, and 356/358s probably get the most hunting use. They all get shot, a lot and not enough.

I have more than 20, but I usually pick one or two rifles to focus on each hunting season. Right now I'm trying to pick which ones I want to load and practice with for the fall.

It's kinda like getting a new rifle every year - some of these I haven't shot in a few years, so it like a new one to me grin

Ditto - sums it up perfectly from my perspective. Rifles calibers range from 17 to 40 with jacketed bullets and 38 to 54 with cast bullets and round balls.
