how are these scopes.quality.warranty .etc.
Posted By: jghoghunter Re: sightron scopes. - 12/28/05
I have a sightron in I believe its a 6-18. The quality for the money is'nt to bad the only thing I didn't like about it was that it seemed like you were looking thru a tube you could see a black ring around around the outer edge. I don't know about the warrenty never have had a problem with it and it's been to S.D. 2 times and all over central pa. It will be headed back to S.D. this summer again.

they suck,to some it up real fast......

I looked at one at Sportsmans Warehouse, a silver 3-9x40 SII. Glass seemed along the lines of B-3200, but the silver finish had what looked like silver paint applied with a brush that drooped a little. Sort of a paint drop that dried up. I couldn't help thinking if they can't apply finish evenly, what is wrong inside? Well... I didn't buy it.

I have a 6x42 SII that is superb. The low-light/light-gathering capabilities of the scope are on par with everything I've tried (though I have yet to try the FX-III) up to an including VX-III series Leupolds.

It tracks precisely, the optics are crystal clear, with little to no distortion even out to the fine edge of the glass. Eye relief is generous and non-critical for a scope of this size/application.

Finish is fine; it's a hunting scope, not a show-piece, and a rather uniform matte black.

Can't say as to why others have said "they suck", because the one's that I've tried, shot, and mine that I own simply don't suck.

For the money, the SII Sightrons are at least on par with the Nikon Monarchs and Leupold VX-IIIs.

Now, the SIs, like the Leupold wally-world specials (Rifleman and VX-I), do suck. For just a little more money, the SII scopes are a world of difference.

I've got a 6X16 on my Swift......it's the least favorite scope I own. Has all the bells and whistles.....just not that good. Wished I would have gone Burris for the same price. Regards, Rick.

Ive got just one...an 8X fixed. A rather odd spec, and a discontinued scope. However, it is plenty bright and clear, decent eye relief. I am quite impressed by the repeatability of the adjustments.

Well, what can I say? I own two, a 3X9 SII and a mini
2.5X10. They are excellent scopes for the money. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Some of the guys here don't like Zeiss scopes either? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Clear optics. Track properly. Even matte finish. And
excellent light gathering. Yeah, I guess they suck? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

I just wish some of the naysayers would tell us what they use?

And where are they purchasing their Swarovski scopes for $200.00? Met a guy hunting this year that didn't like
Leupold scopes. And he was using a Simmons?

To each his own, I guess. Perhaps one of the Bushnell
scopes with the glued-on half saddle might be better? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />

Just remember that most of the "experts" on this site will
deride anything but a Remington 700 with a Krieger barrel
installed by a benchrest mechanic and topped with a Leupold
scope having excessive magnification resting in Talley lightweights. Oh, and don't forget the McMillan stock!

Anything else is just, well, you figure it out for yourself. Your
opinion, of course, won't mean much, unless you have killed
a hundred bear, two thousand deer, and live west of the
mississippi river. And then, you still are required to be in the
"clique"!

I guess what I'm trying to say is, take all the advice you
get here with a grain of salt. Too many of these guys are full of themselves! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

You are spot on with your entire reply, Don.

This is all second hand information BUT,

It is my understanding Meade has bought Simmons and is revamping the line. This is why there are so many clearance deals. The new models are already being offered and are reputed to be of higher quality.

Don I believe you are exactly right about some of the people on this sight. I just built an ultra light with a rem. action (because it was cheap) douglas barrel (because it was cheap), brown precision stock (because it was 8 oz. lighter than anything McMillian has to offer), put together by my local gunsmith and shoots half inch group at one hundred-- pretty good for the first load I run through it while fire forming brass to a 223 AI.

You got your Simmons confused with Sightron.
Posted By: dogcatcher223 Re: sightron scopes. - 12/29/05
Don, your post was right on, LOL.

I got scoffed at by a few for building a "custom" off of a Ruger action. Everyone knows you have to use a Remington 700 or it is junk. But I did use a Krieger barrel!!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Posted By: taxedtodeath Re: sightron scopes. - 12/30/05
My point exactly! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Posted By: taxedtodeath Re: sightron scopes. - 12/30/05
No scoffing from me! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I am building my own custom right now on a Ruger tang safety, short action with a Douglas barrel and Rimrock stock.

I will be happy with it, even though it is a "mere Ruger". <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> 7mm-08 caliber. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />
Posted By: dogcatcher223 Re: sightron scopes. - 12/30/05
Haha, I picked up a tang safety for a song. It is currently being rebarreled and reblued by Shaw. I decided to be the guinea pig since the jury is still out on Shaw. I suspect it will shoot at least as good as factory which would be fine for its purpose.

I have the S2 3x9 and the S2 4x16. Both have been excellent hunting scopes. Both are bright and clear, hold point of aim, and track superbly. (which is more than I can say for some of the higher end name scopes I have had in the past)
Posted By: 260Remguy Re: sightron scopes. - 12/30/05
I put an S2 2.5-7x on my Remington 700 ADL/MR/Ti hybrid, as it is a light weight scope for a light weight rifle. I think that you'd be pleased with an S2.

Like Burris, Shaw is working hard to overcome a bad
rep obtained early on. It will all come together for you! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Hi dog I have a shaw barrel on my mauser action 257 bob and it shoots just fine. Usually it will stay in .5-.75 with speer 100grs. at 3100 at 100 yds.

For what it's worth, I have a 4X14 SII on an M14 type rifle that I use for long range matches. It has had a steady diet of heavy longrange loads for a couple years and it's still alive and well. I have found nothing to complain about on it at all..

I just ordered a Shaw SS 3 1/2 .375 to put on a LH M70. We will see if it will do "minute of bear"......................no Simmons scope though. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />
