Would one of you kind gentlemen who owns one of these please do a brother a favor? Would you please measure the diameter of the barrel at the muzzle?
Thanks.
I should be so lucky.
Nice rifles.
I wonder if there is enough steel at the muzzle to have a .270 rebored to a .338-06.
I have that rifle in an '06 - assuming it's the same barrel profile as the 270, I can measure and report back in a bit. I believe I've read of others reboring that same rifle to 9.3x62...
You are a shameless rifle loony......
Just exploring my options.
Well, you have good taste anyway.
My wife said, "Why don't you forget about that and just get the other rifle you were looking at?" - Dakota 7x57. She's a good woman!
Do it now! Before she realizes what she has said!
She's a good woman. Unfortunately she's not a wealthy woman.
sounds like a neat idea.
Kinda like I'm thinking of reboring a Ruger #1 .375 H&H into a .416 Rigby
Reverend Mike,
I can appreciate being a loony, but I'm not sure I'd do this to an Express.
Reverend Killjoy
It's already a 270, you can't improve it
The Express is gone.
Gold Labels, gone.
Red Labels, gone.
#1's are limited runs only.
They'll probably be down to 2 variants of Hawkeye's by next summer.
I'd leave that .270 a .270.
Travis
Reverend Mike,

Reverend Killjoy
Besides, here are the economics:
Ruger M77 Express - .270 Win (new): $1800
Rebore to .338-06: 300
Total: $2100
Dakota 97: $8350
The Express is gone.
Gold Labels, gone.

Travis
All good points. But that's still a buzz-kill!

You mean a bunch of cheap schit RARs don't make up for those nice long guns?
At least Ruger still makes nice single action revolvers.
Reverend Mike,

Reverend Killjoy
Exactly!
Besides, Look at the JES website for reboring and there is no mention of Rugers.
I had a Ruger rebored by a fellow in North Dakota who wouldn't make any promises, and said they (Ruger barrels) can be trouble for some reason. Mine is certainly not pleasant to look at - rough as a cob actually- but it shoots very adequately for hunting purposes, at least for whatever I'll ever hunt with a 358 Norma. I certainly would not mess with trying to rebore a barrel that has all that custom machining done to it.
Was your rebore a stainless barrel?
The Ruger Express rifles have an integral 1/4 rib? Wonder if that would cause problems at reboring?
According to Clearwater Reboring, the screws for the quarter-rib mounting holes on the Number 1 are very deep. That might be a limiting factor on the Express as well.
Well, I thought it was a good idea. I think I'll just cry "uncle" and continue to nose around.

Ask the company you will have the re-bore done.
Simple.
Stop making sense! It's annoying!
Sorry,it happens every once in a while.

I got her even poorer sister

Yep.
I'd be looking at Montana Rifle Company - they have a couple "custom" rifles which are really nice.
Well, there's the rub. I've contacted Jeff Sipe about that and he told me that they're not doing any custom rifles, even though it's listed on their website.
I have an ASR in 7x57. That is certainly an option to have tweaked into an Express-type rifle.

I can appreciate being a loony, but I'm not sure I'd do this to an Express.

There's no better Ruger to do this to. Who wants a 10 pound 270??? An "Express" rifle should be chambered in something like the 9.3x62 anyway....

"mofo", when you use the right ammo I bet..

The 1/4 rib on the Express is integral to the barrel, unlike the No. 1 which attaches with screws. The only screw on the Express rib secures the 2 leaf rear site in the dovetail. Now to answer your original question, the muzzle on a 30-06 Express is 0.565" which leaves you 0.114" wall thickness with a 338 bore.
By the way, I agree with 'flave - don't do it!
The 270 wouldn't be my first choice in the Express, but it seems too unique a rifle to diddle with. I'd scratch the 338 itch by buying a rifle...
$368 will get one of the last Howa Lightnings in .338WM shipped to your FFL, if that's interesting. Leaves a few nickels to put it in your choice of stock.
Was your rebore a stainless barrel?
Yes, but he said it was a Ruger thing, the most troublesome being the stainless….sometimes. And you find the name Ruger nowhere on the JES website, so……. ? (I'm betting it ain't just one reborer who isn't crazy about the structure of the metal in the hammer-forged Ruger barrels.)
JES has no problem re-boring Rugers.
Travis
Father Michael,
Somewhere between that Dakota thing and destroying your Express seems reasonable.
There are lots of M77's out there in suitable calibers that could be rebored to the 338-06.
I'd find one of those, have JES re-bore it. Then send it off to a gunsmith to have the stock re-worked, the metal re-finished, and any other fancy schit you be needin'.
I sorta did that with my 9.3X62.
Stop making sense! It's annoying!
Give it all up Rev!
I'll walk you through the steps of building a stainless McFlame.....

Nice! That's pretty much where I am. I get the not too subtle impression that to do what I was thinking is tantamount to blasphemy, so I'll go another route.
I appreciate all the input.

Ingwe, what I think I'm going to wind up doing is talking my BIL out of his Cabela 7x57 Super Grade, then finding someone who can do to it what you did with yours; only I'd like to have steel bottom metal, add a quarter-rib, and extend the stock about a half inch. It's rare that I shoot in anything other than shirtsleeves - and short ones, at that. I don't expect "Flave and the Gang" would have any issue with dinking up one of those.
Thats actually a good idea Rev. Only issue there is the forend...its too long and has a Super grade Swivel installed......so it would have to be rasped a bit, set back, re-install ebony cap and maybe rechecked...
Also, I don't know whats on the butt of those, but if its not English Red, it will have to go too....

That's sort of what I was getting at. Somewhere I got the idea Ruger has used something different than the usual firearms grade 416 stainless.
I don't think it's the hammer forged part. I believe Cliff LaBounty said Remington barrels cut pretty well, and they're hammer forged.
The Ruger express barrel is 4140 which shouldn't be a problem material.

The forend tip on the Dakota 76 is 9.5 from the action face. Any idea of the distance on yours? Also, how far is the barrel swivel from the muzzle on yours?
Shoot, you just need to leave me yours in your will and you'll save me a lot of headache!
Mikey old boy, I think we've covered some of this ground before. Like Travis said, there's lots of ways to get there without trashing a valuable 77 Express.
Consider:
A new Hawkeye in .338 or .375 Ruger
A CZ Express model
One of the many FN Deluxe Sporters that can be had for $600 to $1000 on GB and then re-bored.
Is this for a trip overseas, or are you going to start lining up pigs for 2-at-a-time shots? For that, the 77 Express stuffed with 160gr NPs should be fine.

Yeah, actually now that I think about it, it's not only the same song but the same verse as well. I need to just stick with original plan of a putting together a duded-up 7x57.
Speaking of 160gr NPs, I just bought four boxes of .284, 160gr Deep Curls. That gives me 5 boxes each: 160gr and 175gr. At the ranges I shoot I expect they'll slay doubles all day long!
Sorry, Friend, it was never my intention to be the voice of reason!
That's alright. What I really ought to do is spring for either a Blaser or Helix...but I'm not sure I could show my face amongst the "traditional" crowd.
No, absolutely not! Don't you have someone else's money - other than mine - to spend???
Yup,spending mine on a project of my own.
Besides,it's fun picking on you.
Brother, I am easy pickings!
What are you building?
A big-bore.
Reamer,go-gauge,brass,bullets,rifle to re-chamber etc.... A looney's looniness is always in all bloom.
Brother, I am easy pickings!
You are indeed. That's why we keep you around.
At least I haven't been relegated to "Ignore" status yet!
I reserve that honor for very "special" folks. I recently added one to the list, but pardoned another to compensate.
That's alright. What I really ought to do is spring for either a Blaser or Helix...but I'm not sure I could show my face amongst the "traditional" crowd.
OK....
I think maybe its time for an Intervention....
If I ever do that I'll hide it under the bed. But man are they fast, especially the Helix. Have you ever watched Prince What's-His-Name hunting driven boar? I won't pretend to ever be able to do that, but man is he fast.
He's like the German Pigman!
