An older friend of mine asked me if the Model 7 is still offered in .350 Remington Magnum. I looked on the Remington website but although the one model (laminated) talks about it being listed in the .350, no details at all are given on the "specifications" page. It appears that is no longer offered in the CDL. Anyone know..?

This old fellow has used a .350 Rem Mag for a long time but just last year had his Model 600 (i think it was) stolen from his cabin while he was away. He'd like to replace it with a new model... if possible.

THANKS in advance!
Remington tried to revive the 350 RM and 6.5 RM fairly recently with a laminated stock model, although I don't recall the exact model number. It was dropped. As far as I can tell they aren't offering any new rifles in 350 RM nor any new ammo, although the Remington website and catalog are so spectacularly poorly laid out it's hard to tell.

The Remington 673 Guide Gun. I think that they came out around 10-15 years ago.

I had one in 350RM, and they came in 308 as well. It's a cool looking gun that kicked pretty hard from what I recall.

Here's a link to Remington's site:
Remington 673
Remington did offer the .350 in the Model 7 CDL recently, and also from the 90's in the 7KS from the Custom Shop. Ruger also offer it in there stainless/synthetic not long ago. So he he cruises Gunbroker he should be able to find one.
As has been said Remington no longer makes any kind of .350....

If your friend is used to the light well balanced Model 600/660 that was made back in the 1960s and early 70s he would not be happy with the 673...it was 22" and bulky as a full size rifle. I see them all the time in the $700 range.

Excellent condition 600/660s can be had on GunBroker for $900-1200. There are also two offerings from the Custom Shop that come up quite often, the 7KS with a composite stock from McMillian or the full stock that was a laminated 20". I have seen two full stocks recently for in the 1350-1500 range...I think there is one on GB now.

I have both the 600 and 7KS and they are my favorite hunting rifles...

Hope your friend finds a replacement he is happy with.

Bob
Get on this one while you can. It's actually a custom shop model with the stock stripped off.

I thought about posting this before, hearing of all the 350 rm fans here...I just saw what appears to be a mid-70s 700 bdl in 350 at an LGS. Perhaps you could get it online. It had the old pressed fluer-de-lis checkering, white spacers, black forend tip. Very nice shape. A weaver "spartan", or something like that, 3x9 on it. PM me and I can get you info (and check to see if it is still there)It was7 or 800, I think.

What I would really like to see is someone to shoot full power 350 mag loads through it while peering through that scope set in those high high see-through rings- wonder if that'a why it didn't look to be shot much...the thought made me cringe. Nice rifle, though.
I have a KS in .350, one my favorites. About 6.5 pounds scoped.
I have a Model Seven CDL takeoff barrel in 350RM if your friend decides to buy one of the SAUMs that can be had for pretty cheap and swap barrels
Thanks for all the responses. I'll chat with him and see what he decides. I mentioned the 673 to him, as I've seen one at a local shop not long ago. He isn't too keen on them because as has been mentioned, it isn't as sleek and nimble as a 600/660 or Model 7.

My friend (actually a close friend of my departed grandfather) often used his .350 on big bears and moose in Alaska and almost all the larger NA game animals, or even mulies in heavy timber country. Always with hand-loaded Nosler Partitions (250 grain, i think).

I wonder why this cartridge never really caught on? It seems really quite solid to me. I recall reading about one professional hunter/writer who favored the .350 Remington in a carbine for African dangerous game... buffalo, hippo, lions and such. I can't recall his name... anyway...
...reason...because it kicks...and since 99% of the "hunters" do all their sighting in and practice "from a bench" it was not well liked in the gun writing community of the 1960s.

The Model 600 and 660 were lightyears ahead of their time. Back then lightweight was not a desirable attribute in a hunting rifle like it is today. Add to it the laminated outerspace looking stock and vent rib and it was a marketing disaster.

As to lack of love for the cartridge, one of the biggest complains is having to deep seat heavy bullets into the powder chamber to make the 2.800" LOA of the Remington 600/7/700SA action. The fact that bullets of equal weight from a 18.5" barrel were equaling the 22" ballistics of a .35 Whelen were simply lost on people.

Like I said...my favorite hunting round...

Keep your eye for a 350 in the Remington Classic. They can be found for a decent price once in a while. He could even have the barrel cut down to 20" or even 18" if that's what he wanted. Good luck with your search.

Yes, I suppose you're correct on all counts. I agree that the cartridge and original Remington rifles seemed to way ahead of their time. I guess the .350 Remington must have been the original short magnum cartridge... eons before the WSM, SAUM and RCM cartridges. I think it should get some love from major manufacturers these days.

Calibers larger than 30 simply don't sell in sufficient numbers in the US for manufacturers to support them.
If he wants to spend the $$, NULA would probably build a .350 Rem Mag for him. http://www.newultralight.com/HTML/custom-rifles.html :
"Model 28 Short (The Ultimate Alaskan Rifle) - The Model 28 Short was originally designed to handle the 6.5 and .350 Remington Magnums, but now handles the new .300 Winchester Short Magnum and all of its offspring, as well. When light weight and power are what you need in your rifle, this is the gun for you. $3,900 (left-hand add $100)"

The Remington Custom Shop still lists the Model 7 Custom Mannlicher Stock in 350 Magnum - don't know what it takes to get a rifle out of there these days. http://www.remingtoncustom.com/HunterGrade_7CustomMS.aspx

A 700 Classic may be one of the easier 350s to find used, great rifle ( I like mine!), but it will never feel like a 600/660.

The 350 RM is as American as hotdogs & apple pie. A good recoil pad tames those carbines quite nicely. No recoil problem with my M7 CDL.
I have not spoken to the Remington Custom Shop in years. Maybe they would chamber a Mod 7 in 350?

Yep. Give me the 700 over the M7.

Here's a couple of classics. One has been altered a bit.

The gunbroker search turned up quite a few 350's.
I had a Model 7 CDL in 350mag. It was my carry rifle for black bear season. It would occasionally hang up on the second round. I tried different brass and bullet seating, and it still would jam occasionally. A dealer wanted it, so I traded it away. I think it was made in about 2004. It was a standard catalog item at the time, not a custom shop gun.
Love my 673. So far I've taken two big black bears with it one shot each. The biggest one shown in my avatar is 7 1/2 squared with a 19 7/16 skull. He was easily over an honest 400 pounds. The 350 RM is a decisive killer. Both bears went pretty much straight down at the shot. I use 225 grain Nosler Partition bullets.

For me I don't care for the muzzle blast from the 18.5 inch barrel on the model 600's. I think a M660 with its 20 inch barrel would be better. I recently bought a pretty pristine one in 308 in a local gun shop. As soon as I walked into the house my wife said thanks for buying me a new rifle. Easy come easy go I guess!

As a tribe the 600's & 660's have almost a cult following in western Washington for a long time. They're a pretty common sight. Here a short handy gun has long been popular in the timber. The kids now a days don't seem to go for them as much, they want the latest long range wonder. Problem is at least on the west side of the Cascade mountains long range is a bit limited.

If I wanted to spend the money I'd be tempted to go for one of the M7 full stock carbines Remington still offers through their custom shop. I like the M7 action. It's lighter and 1/2 inch shorter then a short M700 and has a little larger ejection port. To me it's a hunters action that in a real world hunting rifle is just as accurate as any M700. My 673 is by far one of my most accurate rifles and it's not finicky about what it gets fed. With one of the full stock M7's you would definitely have something no one else did.

Good luck with your search.
Great Post Cougarz.
