Whats your go to bullet and grain you use for your 308 Win. ? Also what game have you taken with it ? I just put a Remington model seven stainless on layaway and gonna start with Federal 150 grain Nosler Partitions. Will be used for PA whitetails and PA bear.
Posted By: tominboise Re: 308 Win ? - 12/04/15
150 gr Hornady interlock shoots pretty good in my Remmy 700 Mountain rifle. Heck, 150 gr Federal blue box shoots pretty good in the mountain gun. I have loaded a bunch of 130gr TTSX but have yet to put one into an animal....

I've shot some 165 gr Fusion bullets which shoot fine but seem to be heavier than required for deer and coyotes.
Posted By: john843 Re: 308 Win ? - 12/04/15
I think 150 is definitely the place to start with a .308 Seven. I've got a 1998 SS .308 that loves the Hornaday Interlock 150s and seems to prefer the old school cup & core over the newer offerings in general.
As to game, last kill was an 8 pt. whitetail at 187 lbs.(big for these parts) shot at 93 yds. Plowed his front end for about 8-10 ft. trying to run and fell over dead.

150 grain Power Point and 165 Fusion. My Montana loves em both so much that there was no reason to look at any others. I love a gun that doesn't need expensive ammo to shoot well. I am in Pa also and just carried my Montana 308 for bear with the 165 Fusion. I took a doe last year with the same bullet and the 165 knocked her down and out. The 165 Fusion is ideal for a deer/bear load in Pa. No need for any tougher bullet for what you will shoot in Pa.

165 partition for deer, with the the cheaper Speer for practice. RL 15 for powder, very good combo. I settled on this after taking deer with the 180 silver tip, 165 Sierra, 150 federal, 165 Speer RN, 150 gr. Speer, 180 gr. Sierra RN. All of the above worked, but I like the partition.
Posted By: kalbrecht Re: 308 Win ? - 12/04/15
150 grain Nosler Accubond for antelope and deer. For bigger stuff (like elk and moose) I usually use 180 grain Accubonds in my 300 WSM.
Posted By: CrowRifle Re: 308 Win ? - 12/04/15
Try the Barnes 100 or 130 TTSX. At 3000+ fps they are devastating.
Posted By: Terryk Re: 308 Win ? - 12/04/15
I generally get a heavier bullet for bear. Tomorrow is bear and deer in 4D and I will be carrying a 260 with 140 grain partitions. If I took the 308 I would have 165 partitions. I personally think a good interlocked bullet helps anchor bear or deer. I hope to only see deer tomorrow, but bear are plentiful here, and depending on the size I would pull he trigger. Sows with cubs will get a pass.

The 150 Sierra pro hunter has worked well for me in 2 different 308's for a few deer. I wouldn't be scared to sink one into a bear, just haven't had a chance.

150 or 165 Accubond.

My Ruger goes sub MOA with factory Federal "blue box" 150's. Can't beat that and at $18 a box from Walmart, life is good!

Lapua brass, ttsx 130 and 38.2gns H4895 = reduced recoil heaven in a Kimber Montana. Killed five this year and no recovered bullets. No need to track as they all fell within a few yards of there they were standing.

I load 165 Hornadys in several .308s for family and friends, and no one complains about performance. Go to load is 44gr RL15, but I hear Varget's a winner, too.
Posted By: uinta Re: 308 Win ? - 12/04/15
I've killed a few elk with the .308, have used various 150-180 grain bullets for them. My latest load uses the 180 Accubond. Killed a lot of yotes with it as well. I'm fairly practical when it comes to hunting and the .308 fits that way of thinking. It's common as dirt and just kills everything.
The 150 partition you're looking at should work great.

I am in north central Pa. I am on the line of our extended bear season. I have two doe tags to fill so it's more of a no stress/fun casual hunt close to home for me. My fields were filled with doe tonight. smile
I need to get some blood on a classic M70 270 so I will be taking her out and letting her bark this week.

I built a 308 last year just because I have not had one in a while. I decided to let the rifle tell me what it likes and it turned out to be a 150 grain Nosler BT over Varget. Two deer so far this season with the 308 and they were both bang-flop at 100 and 130 yards. Also had good accuracy with 165 grain Sierra Pro Hunters over IMR 4064. I have not shot anything with the Sierra's yet but from many years experience in my 280 AI I know they will work as well. The 308 is not hard to load for and I have not tried anything that did not shoot well over about eight bullet/powder combinations. Good luck and enjoy your 308.
Posted By: Dillonbuck Re: 308 Win ? - 12/04/15
A a partition is never a bad decision, but a 150 to 180 cc type bullet will work great on deer. I like 150 or 165 sierra pro-hunters or BTs, but any will be fine.
Posted By: antelope_sniper Re: 308 Win ? - 12/04/15
150gr NBT, but I don't shoot elk with it.
Posted By: Huntr Re: 308 Win ? - 12/04/15
155gr. Scenar. 4 elk so far...
Posted By: masrx Re: 308 Win ? - 12/05/15
I have a 308 that likes 165 gr Sierra GK and another that likes 150 gr ttsx. I feel good either way, I would pick up the one that shoots the Barnes best if I was going to hunt something very large like an elk, but I would probably get the same result from either.
Posted By: Blacktailer Re: 308 Win ? - 12/05/15
For NA and SA 150TTSX. Fallow, blacktail blackbuck.
For Africa 165TSX. Zebra, bushbuck, impala, warthog.
The zebra, fallow and blackbuck were taken by Mrs Blacktailer.
Posted By: castnblast Re: 308 Win ? - 12/05/15
I use 165's for everything in my .308. If all I was hunting was deer, I'd use 150's but we often have elk, moose and bears on license at the same time, so I stick with 165 gr. for all, and mostly the Nosler partitions. Have also used that bullet for my one and only Dall sheep. No complaints.
Posted By: logger Re: 308 Win ? - 12/05/15
150 gr. Accubond and 2000 MR. Two deer and one 6 x 6 elk.
Posted By: Salty303 Re: 308 Win ? - 12/05/15
150 ttsx for all hunting. 150 amax for steel and paper. Call me lazy but it fits my needs just fine.

You got it covered. 150 Partition is all I shoot, and all anybody will ever need in a 308 WIN.
Posted By: Richdeerhunter Re: 308 Win ? - 12/05/15
I've used a .308 on a bunch of deer over the years. Most were 150 ballistic tip, but several with Hornady 165 BTSP. Lately, I'm using the 168 ballistic tip. I shot a buck in NY with it last year and it worked well.
Posted By: jt402 Re: 308 Win ? - 12/05/15
I found by accident that mine liked 150 Federal blue box really well (1/2"-5/8" if I do my part [3@100]). That is all I use, but no game larger than mule deer encountered. They are accurate and they work well.

155 Scenars and 165 HPBT Game Kings.

Elk, deer, coyotes, etc.

150 NABs and 155 Scenars.

Lots of good advice and options.

Here's another option that I find interesting.

Daughter's .308 loads for her Ruger Hawkeye are as follows:
130g TTSX over CFE223, 3045fps (her elk load this year but no elk)
150g BT over Varget, 2765fps
165g North Fork SS over Varget, 2744fps

Next year she will probably carry the 130g TTSX again for antelope and elk.

My .308 is a Ruger Scout with a 16/1" barrel. Finished load development, took the scope off and mounted the peep sight.

For loads I have the following:

130g TTSX over CFS223, 2868fps
150g BT over Varget, 2699fps
208g A-MAX over Varget, 2296fps

Haven't taken any game there but the accuracy is there with all three. IF I can shoot it well enough with the peep I hope to use it on game next year.

My daughter took her first elk (a cow) a few days ago using a 155 Scenar out of her 20" .308 Tikka.

I posted this elsewhere, but I was quite proud of her. Lasered 375 and put it dead center behind the shoulder. The Scenar made short work of this elk. She ran 15-20 steps and tipped over dead.

I guess I've used the 308 for over 25 years. Coyotes, antelope, whitetail, mule deer and elk. bullets have been 150's and 165's. Took my biggest bodied whitetail with a 150 Speer HotCore.

Elk-Wise, 3 with the 165 Accubond, 1 with the 150 TTSX, 1 with a 165 Speer HotCore. Biggest, a nice 7x7 with the 165 Speer...

I have to admit that I'm surprised to hear so many using the 150 gr

I suppose I've greatly underestimated that weight...

Animals aren't really that tough to kill... but I have to admit, my bias for BIG big game is the 165... I draw my arbitrary SD line right under its .248 number.
Posted By: mystro Re: 308 Win ? - 12/06/15
150gr destroy big whitetails and are good for average size Black Bears. I do move up to a 165 bonded bullet for black bears only because we get 500+ lbs bears in Pa.
I have a 2 doe tags to fill tomorrow and am torn to either use my 270 or 308......

Todays bullets are far better constructed, then what the Popular gunwriters in the olden days used.

I would prefer to use 150TTSX, if I had a 308Win.

Not me... I'm not a mono fan, having witnessed too many failures. However, were I running a mono in the 308, I'd be using a 125 or 130. Speed is the friend of the mono's.

150 ttsx over Varget has done well on a moose and a caribou. 180 partitions over IMR4064 has accounted for a moose and a black bear. Both loads shoot well out of my Kimber Montana, hitting very close to the same spot.....soooo my go-to load depends on what I'm feeling like taking at the time. I do have to say I recovered a 150 ttsx from the caribou and it weighed 150 grains, and have recovered a few 180 partitions that all weighed close to 130 grains.
Posted By: jt402 Re: 308 Win ? - 12/09/15
Never had a .308 until about '92-3. I bought a ..308 that had an inch removed from LOP with pad and an ugly free float. I viewed the gun as an action and paid accordingly. Cuirious got me. I bought the cheapest 150 Federals and shot an amazing three shot group. Then two more to see if the first was a fluke. Not! I went back and bought all they had of the same ammo. I'm still shooting it but down to the last full box plus a few.

The 150s have been used on deer, hogs, and coyotes. Works great near and far.......The short butt is great with winter garb, plus the ladies in my life can also use it.

I suspect the 150 NP will be fine. The 100 NP puts my .243 on steroids.

Best, Jack

I only killed two deer with my 308. One a doe using a 165 gr Hornady interloc and the 2nd was with a 150 gr power point . Both died pretty quick as in within my sight and the 2nd was a really big bodied 10 pt . I didn't catch either bullet. I would try both and see which your rifle liked best and use that.

mystro, I like that stock on your featherweight. It's the first time I've seen a laminate featherweight stock like it. I just wish Winchester did a better job on the checkering with them. I also have a New Haven featherweight, but it has a walnut stock and chambered for 300 WSM.

Let's see - The M660 gets the traditional 150gr. Hornady Interloc, The M7 Kevlar gets the 165gr. Sierra HPBT, Numerous M7 SS's get 150 gr. NBT's or Sierra 165 HPBT's, a M700 Mtn. gets 180gr. corelokts, and my Titanium 98 Mauser gets the 130gr.TTSX. Used to use 180gr.corelokts and Speer SP&RN's. Can't really recall a problem with any of them.

Been hunting with .308s since late 80's. Just about exclusively for deer in northwest region of adirondacks in NY. Don't handload. Started out with standard cup & core 150 gr stuff from Remington and federal. Good accuracy, never lost a deer, but bullets failed to exit about half the time, and had some break up. Decided I wanted better performance and being predisposed to heavier weight bullets anyway moved up to 165 gr, initially cup&core again. Worked great, then rem dropped the load I was using ( the old express 165 gr pspcl). Spent a few years looking for another factory 165 load that I liked, went thru some options from hornandy, speer, forgot who else, then went to the fusions when they came out. Been very happy with the 165 gr Fusions since. Would't hesitate to shoot a bear with it either (but most bears I've seen taken up there were with 30/30s, 32 ws, 300 savage even a 38/40!)

Shot this group on anothe day and knew I had pushed the third shot left so I took a 4th shot...

I have not shot anything with this rifle as I usualy hunt with .35s...but one of my hunting partners has the clone to this gun and has killed one 8 point and two doe in Pa. over the last few seasons. I think he is using the same ammo.

Only game I have killed with a .308 was two antelope in 1987...and they were with 150 Petitions...

165gr BTs have been the standard in my Rem 660. Had a fling with Sierra 165 bthp but they were a little too destructive. I hate to hear of magic bullets, rifles, etc. But will say this combo has shown the best overall results, for me, of anything tried, from 243 to 300 WM. Have only shot deer, but would expect good results on bear.

150 Hornady Interlock fuels my 308 with deadly dependability.

Whitetails:
In one .308W 130gr TTSX.
In another, 150gr NBT.

As expected the NBT's are leaving the larger exit holes. Don't see much difference in how they go down.

I've shot competition and hunted with a 308 since the 70's. The 150 gr weight is a good starting place. My favorite hunting bullet is the Sierra 150 gr ProHunter and a case full of 4064. I've killed Whitetail deer, Antelope, and Mule Deer with this load.
