That little fella ought to be the berries for a youth hunting rifle.
Posted By: taylorce1 Re: Howa Mini Grendel - 02/01/16
It has been talked about already several places. I'd like to play with one, but word is they won't be available until mid year. So that isn't all that far away I guess.
Posted By: OlongJohnson Re: Howa Mini Grendel - 02/01/16
I'd probably pick one up in Russian. Cheaper ammo, a little more thump at close range. I haven't shot anything with it, but my sense is that the Grendel is really effective at punching paper at long range, but .264 hunting bullets may like a little more velocity, like Swede or Rem gives them.
Posted By: CrimsonTide Re: Howa Mini Grendel - 02/01/16
It's already February, so mid year is just 4 months out.

is it truly a mini soviet size action?

what a great deal. perfect kid rifle.

The writer thinks he needs more than a 3-9x scope to make the rifle do one MOA at 300 yards. Pffft!
Posted By: hillbillybear Re: Howa Mini Grendel - 02/01/16
I think this Mini-Grendel with a 100 grain Nosler BT would be a right nifty little deer rifle.

I have no experience with Nikko Sterling scopes but I can't imagine it being a great scope.
Posted By: mathman Re: Howa Mini Grendel - 02/01/16
The way I read it his beef was more with lack of magnification than it was with clarity, although the scope does look to be a turd.
Posted By: MileHighShooter Re: Howa Mini Grendel - 02/02/16
Those scopes aren't all that great. I had a Howa package several years ago, the scope was serviceable at best.

I like the mini Howa's but I won't ever buy one until the start offering 5 round mags for them. Those 10 rounds just look funny, plus I can only carry 5 while hunting anyways. Having a magazine that long is just asking for extra hunter/warden interaction

The 123gn bullet ( SST mostly) has been the most used bullet for hunting on the Grendel forum with a great number of kills for the Grendel. This is a thread on the knockdown effectiveness of the Grendel where the combined experience of the forum has been collated into a graph with updates as the thread progresses. I have taken quite a few animals with my own rifle and can honestly attest to its effectiveness. It will kill well past where the 7.62x39 would ever be used at. http://www.65grendel.com/forum/showthread.php?10955-Grendel-quot-knock-down-quot-survey.

Edit to add this section of the forum where all the hunting has been documented

I guess my idea of reading comprehension is different from yours. Can you please tell me where you can't hunt with more than 5 rounds in a bolt action rifle in Colorado?

Quote
1. CENTERFIRE RIFLES
a. Must be minimum of .24 caliber (6 mm).
b. Must have a minimum 16-inch barrel and be at least 26 inches long.
c. If semiautomatic, a maximum of six rounds are allowed in the magazine
and chamber combined.
d. Must use expanding bullets that weigh minimum 70 grains for deer,
pronghorn and bear, 85 grains for elk and moose, and have an impact
energy (at 100 yards) of 1,000-ft.-pounds as rated by manufacturer.
e. It is illegal to hunt game birds, small-game mammals or furbearers with a
centerfire rifle larger than .23 caliber during regular rifle deer and elk seasons
west of I-25, without an unfilled deer or elk license for the season. A
small-game, furbearer or unfilled big-game license is required.

Didn't that use to say 6 total, not semi-automatic 6 only?

Nope, I used to hunt with a SMLE and a 10 round Mag over 20 years ago. I can understand not liking the mag hanging down. I'd like to see the mag release moved to between the trigger guard and magazine.

Legacy offers a 5 round mag for $50 for them...

the 10 rounder costs the same...

if you pick one up, maybe you can get someone to swap you out...

I was going to pick up a second 10 rounder for mine...

but would be more than happy to have them ship me a 5 rounder and trade it for someone who has a 10 rounder and doesn't want it...

Travis I predict you will be changing your tune once you give a Grendel a try in an AR or accurate Mini bolt action like the Howa or a CZ 527. Lot to be said for a flat shooting light weight mini action that can deliver energy similar to the 243 or 257 Bob with some super BC hunting bullets or a 100-grain TTSX offering

Yes I am Biased based on experience with a CZ 527. What can I say, I am a CZ 527 freek. It could be worse couldn't it smile

Those detachable mags are just fugley and will just get in my way. I'd buy one with a standard floorplate but I guess that's too much to ask for...
Posted By: Hunterapp Re: Howa Mini Grendel - 02/04/16
More like Sweet.

Moderat recoil, accuracy is a plus. Knock down power is very acceptable to a good distance by my standards if the guy behind the trigger and the circumstances are prime for a well placed shot.

Have to concede this cartridge is not for the guy or circumstances that may call for a Texas heart shot on a Mule deer for example.
Posted By: johno Re: Howa Mini Grendel - 02/05/16
The grendel is a great cartridge, no doubt about. I love the 7.62x39 though, I have a CZ 527 carbine only 18 1/2" barrel. With Hornady 123grn SSTs I have taken a number of sambar deer down here, they have all been one shot kills.

Using 2219 (H322 I think to you blokes) I am getting 2,430 fps
with no presure signs, I could a little more i'm sure but can't see any reason to, 3 shot one hole group has me very happy. A lot of pig shooters here use the same load with great success

That sounds almost exactly like my .223.

Only the .223 is suitable for a Texas heart shot on mule deer.

Thanks for the correction!

I feel the same way about the CZ527, just something about the mag sticking out. Other then that, they are interesting guns. Thought about ordering one to re-barrel to 25-45 Sharps, but found a deal on a M7 around the same time those were hitting dealers online.
Posted By: Boogaloo Re: Howa Mini Grendel - 02/05/16
Speaking of the M7, for about the same package size one could have one chambered in a Creed and get 600yds more downrange in the bargain...a dangerous thought.
