I have a Model 700 .243, that collects dust....
Thinking of taking it with me to the 'smith tomorrow for a re-barrel.
I may just go with a 22 or 24 inch fluted bbl or another caliber.

Ideas, suggestions???

What are you going to use it for?

What components do you have? Assuming you have a bunch of 243 stuff, doesn't make a whole lot of sense to punt on that caliber.
If you aren't fully invested in a particular caliber, I prefer the 7-08.

Also, as has been said over and over, build around the bullet. Pick a bullet that does what you want really well and taylor your build to shoot that bullet.

I have a few hundred .243 projectiles.. Somewhere around 150 brass. My dad has a .243 so he can have my supplies..

I have some quick .257's... and a .280..
My lil varmint is a .218bee..

What will it be used for?? Varmints, paper, deer...

Oh yeah.. My stepson has a 7-08.. In one year, the caliber has grown on me. But my 25's and 280 will likely be my deer guns

Possibly a short case 6.5mm? A 260 or 260AI would be fun to play with.

If your going to stick with the 25's and 280 for deer I'd probably go with a fast twist 243 for the targets and Varmints. You could take the money you saved by not having to buy stuff to load another caliber and put it toward optics or new stock ect.

.473 bolt face would leave me thinking of a 6.5X47.

My choice would be .257 Roberts fluted barrel 22" long. Just found a pre'64 Winchester M/70 Featherweight that had been rebarreled, it's the Featherweight Winchester should have made but never did. They did in the later version of the Featherweight though.

Already have a .257AI, I have a Roberts when I am fireforming cases. No need for another.

The OEM Big Green SAAMI 243Win in issued guise,will of course do it all and then some. They are twisted/throated right for 105's and have the COAL to arrange VERY nice thangs. I'd simply feed it some Hornie 105HPBT's and heed the reality of being fresh outta excuses,with the newfound splendors inherent.

A 6x MQ would go without saying...just sayin'. Zero'd at 250yds(+2.2" at 100yds),the windshield grants 1160yds of opportunity. 1500yds is but 4.3 Mils,so lotsa elbow room remains there,in a 10MPH full value condition. With 'Horn rings in a 2pc affair,60MOA+ of inclination is easily arranged,which will toss better than 35Mils in the erector.

Tough to beat a DBM for Giggles Utility and the increase in both COAL and capacity,do not compromise fun.

So rather than chase rainbows,I'd always rather start wearing out barrels of merit,that are twisted/throated to grant copious potential.

While I've had herds of 'em,I'm no great fan of the SAAMI 22-250,beings it's such a poor design,leaving so much potential on the table. While 8" is the ticket in .224",it's tough to swoon a 8" SAAMI 22-250.

1-8" Mike Rock VS contoured 20" SAAMI 22-250 in an A5,Badger M4,Reupold MK4 M3 3.5-10x(they suck too),yada,yada,yada.



I'd much rather gun a 8" 223 or better yet 223AI(foreground),than a SAAMI 22-250 in ANY twist rate. Awaken the Dragon and a fast twist 22-250AI is assuredly a wicked sonofabitch,if only because I've a few of them too.

With a standard 22-250 being able to deliver over 3350 fps with 80 grain bullets, I don't see it as being so bad. It's no 223 AI, of course, but it ain't bad.
Still, if you are bored witha perfectly good set-up the way it is, it makes perfect sense to go with something which allows you to get special order dies and spend some quality time forming cases. The 6mm-250AI would do the trick in this regard. Special dies, form cases, and nicely match your 243 for performance; perfect. GD

While I've lotsa love for a High RPM 22-250AI,the 243Win in your mitts is a Giant Killer on all levels,with but a modicum of thought tossed in it's behalf.

Sig LRF's are still under 400 clams(I ordered one yesterday and a pard ordered one today) and they are THE pick of the litter. Hint.

MQ's are fixing to be on Sale in but a week and they are THE pick of the litter at more than twice their regular price. Hint.

DBM's are somewhat subjective and not a "must have" in 243Win,but a "nice to have",for reasons cited above. They connect alotta dots. I'd always rather go ADL over BDL,due an increase in rugged reliability and the metallurgical advantages inherent same.

I of course have multiple High RPM 22-250AI's and 243AI's and think highly of both. With a capable 243Win SAAMI in my mitts,I'd do neither one and would simply shoot THE fhuqk outta the OEM spout and with 105's expressly. That'd be ala Lapooey false shouldered positive headspaced 308 Virgins,'17,200's and a square smooched 105 Hornie HPBT.

This velocity was easily achieved, from a 28 inch barrel , mind you, with a liberal dose of 4831sc. Everything about the rifle was just fine except for one thing, it didn't shoot as well as other rifles I had which were also better in the wind. Since it's sole purpose was as a target rifle and I hate to compete with a handicap out of the gate.
Of course, a handicap doesn't stop everyone. Witness the 'Stick. Despite being a brainless twit, he has no problem painting a vebal picture, albeit abstract, of his fantasyland.
I strongly suspect the 22-250 would be hard pressed to hit 3300 from a 24 inch barrel. I can't say what the AI version would because I've not tried it; nor will I. I'm sure the 'stick has tried it or, at least imagined it, and will cheerfully spew forth on the subject. GD

Okay, so after the chat with the 'smith yesterday as well as the spirited musings posted here... Reading load data and some specs.

How has everyone fared with the 80gr ttsx or similar in the .243? That bullet should provide around 3300fps and handle anything from paper to yotes and deer quite easily.
If I want to shoot a 100+ gr projectile I will shoot either of my quarter bores.

I'd keep it a 243. Put the money into a McMillan for it and the best scope you can possibly afford. Then shoot it a lot.

Something like that....you don't need a McMillan, put a B&C stock on it, if you rebarrel, make it a slow twist, don't need the most expensive scope, A Leupold VX2 will do, put it in windage adjustable mounts, keep your old style Remington trigger,and Don't use any H335 in it, and shoot bullets with a BC under .500 This will all make Stick happy to post more drivel, and wonder of wonders, it will still shoot accurately, work well, and kill schitt!

My experience with 85 TSX is stellar out of a 243 at 3000-3200fps. Accurate in the rifles I have (have had) and performance on game outstanding with Varget, H4350, N160, IMR4064 and R17. I'm sure no difference could be seen with an 80 ttsx, but the ttsx has a better reputation for consistent expansion with the tip, over the TSX I've used. I've not caught a TSX yet, nor lost an animal, but large deer are still kinda soft, though I've taken a few large boars and not captured one either.

A 95NBT is a 'Fire favorite for deer and such, I've killed more than a few critters with the old Sierra 100GMK, and to Little Stick's credit, the 105 Hornady has dropped a couple of deer for me.

So, why not make the extra step, if you're gonna step away from a 243, and go for a 22/308?

I agree with the dislike of the 22-250 in its commercial form, don't care for it.

The 22-250AI is the best wrapper,from which to extoll meaningful .224" BC's,on a .473" boltface. She
's the best blend of capacity to COAL,as quantified by logistics and superlative brass.

When owning a perfectly viable cartridge turns to boredom it's time to begin shooting more & playing with different bullet/powder load combinations. That'll turn boredom into a renewed appreciation for said round.

Good brass definitely would be the foundation.

Here's one. It's a superlative rifle with a OEM 10 twist, blued, walnut, extra short throat. Kisses at ~2.5 COAL with 70 grain Speers over BLC2 at a scorching 3200 fps. It's a one-holer for 2 shots at 50 yards. I can go long range to 200 with the incredible versatility of the Ruepold with only holding a couple inches over wayyyyy out there!
Handles submersion in salt water creeks, and I've yet to split the durable walnut when hauling in 12" trout and c-mackin 'em over the head to subdue the mighty beasts.

Seriously, what would be a better powder choice, in your estimation? The 4831sc produced good velocity and there was still more room in the case even with that slow powder. I was to try a faster powder, I would only further reduce loading density; not that I think that is all that critical.
I'm planning to try some 4451 soon but I wouldn't even consider it if you don't concur.
By the way, shooting poorly as it does, it still beats 1/2 minute for long strings so it doesn't totally suck.
Oh, and throw in some more salmon or steelhead pics; I like 'em. GD

I'll trade you straight up for my 700 VTR in .204 Ruger. Then you can go slay poon dogs and I'll use the 243 for deer here in Indiana. Got a pile of 105 hybrids to run through it too!

A fast twist 22-250AI is a wicked fhuqking machine and more than a few pards are leaning on them as Mainstay Utility Rifles,ala 1st Gen Ti and Montucky builds. Dick Rifles are held in their rightful high esteem in these parts and do alotta nice thangs,with 75's at 3450fps+.

I'm going to give you the particulars on this rifle in an attempt to add to your... well, let's call it knowledge.
This is an old CIL 950 T which is a single shot Savage 110. The receiver threads were re-cut, the receiver was faced and the bolthead was trued. Trigger is stock but with a replacement spring (homemade)and is set at 20 oz. The barrel was a 1 1/4 stainless blank from McGowen which I turned to heavy varmint contour. Chamber is SAAMI min. but with the throat extended for the longer 75-80 grain bullets.
The stock is original but reshaped and refinished. I shoot lefty so like all stocks to be ambidextrous (in caseI want to sell one). So it's a walnut stock. Bedding is common pillar bedding with a third screw added. The tang is clear.
The mounts are the simple but effective weaver steel bases with Leupold Rings, Scope is a Leupold 24x. All in all, pretty common stuff.
Given the heavy bullets and adequate case capacity, my powder choices were 4350 and 4831sc. Both worked well but the 4831 is easier to measure. Accuracy is decent with ten shot groups at three hundred meters usually around the two inch mark. Just not quite good enough to be competitive in today's "F" class arena. Nice to shoot and probably warrants a little more tuning. One fellow advised me to load Varget and reduce velocity as it worked well for him. I figure, if I'm going to load slow, why have a 22-250?
When my powder order arrives, I'll be trying some 4451 in this one and also in the 6.5's. If I were you, I could always just pretend it worked well and post some salmon pictures to prove it (?) but I'm stuck with reality.
Right now, my reality is that I'm trying to get so I can hold my old 22 still enough to reliably hit targets offhand so I don't have time to mess with 22-250.

I see little point in describing machining or set-up techniques to you because there is little chance you would understand the description. Truing a Savage is just the same as truing a 700 and is not a bad idea becaue the bolt heads do not always float significantly. Ultimately, you still want the bolt face to be perpendicular to the axis and parallel to the locking surfaces. I'm sure you can easily design the fixturing and determine how to best set up the bolt head to accomplish this. Having completed this task, you then have to assemle the bolt to be sure the bolt body isn't far enough off to not allow the bolt head to sit as it should (shockingly, Savage quality control is not always top drawer) but you know all of this. One great aspect of the Savage action, in comparison to the Remington, for instance, is that the sear does not influence the attitude of the bolt body.
When it comes to scope adjustments, I confess to not having any issues which create any real concerns for me but I do agree with your statement that the T-16 "absaolutely SMOKES" Leupold tracking. Wally Seibert said the T series scopes were the best scopes, mechanically, that he had seen and I can't see why I would dispute this. Nonetheless, I have three of the Leupolds, made over a span of about thirty years, and they suit me OK.
You haven't seen the bullets I try because you don't open your bleary eyes and look. That is the only explanation I can think of.
What else? Oh yes, McGowen. This particular barrel is actually one which I probably should not have accepted becaue it was not straight. I like the guys though and they have been good to me so I took it anyway. Besides, apart from the difficulty in set-up, a curved bore doesn't always have all that much effect anyway. One MRC barrel I used was way crooked yet shot as well as any barrel of that weight (#2 Shilen contour)I have seen. It was a 221 Fireball built on a 722. Anyway, this particulat McGowen isn't perfectly straigh but the internal finish is excellent and it showed no movement when it was contoured. By the way, I am also shooting a thirty and an 8mm I got in the same batch and they are excellent barrels; straight, smooth, and uniform.

Anyway, in an effort to increase my love for the .243 I went shopping. Picked up a can of H414 at the advice of a buddy. Also got some 95gr NBT and 80gr TTSX.

Also going to take the advice of some here and shoot it some....

CBB be sure and try reloader 17 out before you mass produce any one load. The 95 NBT and H4350 had been my go to load. Zerged deer very nicely with a 2930 avg fps. Switched to 105 Hornady BTHP and RL17. With a 22" barrel I'm getting 2980 fps avg, no pressure signs and tight groups. Hadn't zerged anything yet with the 105s but I take it on good authority that they do well even on square shoulder shots.

I have been on the lookout for 4350, RL22 17 AND 19. Shops here are sold out. I may have to make the long trek to the big shop a couple hours away.

Need to start stocking up when I find it.

I recently took a plunge and bought 8pounds of 4451 which is one of the Enduron powders from IMR. With a burn rate similar to 4350, it should be perfect for the cartridges in which I would normally use that powder. We shall see. Relatively fine grained so will meter well. Also, it is denser than 4350 so in those cartridges where capacity was borderline for 4350, this might be good. I would think it should pair upwell with 80-85 grain bullets in the 243. GD
