Got some local distributors with inquiries out for one of the new Green Mountain Ascents in 308. Curious as to if anyone has even seen one of the new ones.

Well I have one now. The green is much lighter than the Kimber pictures but I like it. Came out to 6lbs 10oz with the VX-6HD 3-18x44. A little heavy for this rifle (it's the 308) but I love that scope, and it does not feel top heavy to me. And it still almost 4 lbs lighter than my 338WM I'm used to hunting with. Going to shoot it tomorrow, got 4 different rounds to try out, all Partitions, 150 & 180 Federal, 165 Nosler, and 180 Sellier and Bellot (sp?). Rooting for the Nosler 165s or Federal 180's to win. Will report back.

Nice! I asked this same question a couple months ago. I've got an original Mountain Ascent in 308. I think I'd have preferred a painted stock.

I handled the new Mtn Ascent in the light sage green this past Sunday. Nice, but I prefer the gray, and have no need for all the additional action and barrel milling. The standard MT's are plenty light in my view. But if I were wanting an 84 taken to the extreme, it would be my choice over the camo patterns.

This is the first Kimber I've owned and I've gotta say the trigger is exceptional. It came at 3.5 lbs exactly and I'm gonna leave it there until I shoot it some and tinker with it from there.

As for the finish, I'm curious as to how it will hold up. I somehow chipped one of the textured bits off behind the tang while mounting the scope. Probably when using the heavy arse lapping bars to get the Talleys to align, they were further off than expected when I just put them on. I suggest anyone get the Warren kit or similar for mounting scopes. By tightening down one screw on each base with the bar in and the rings tight I got it perfectly straight. I also did a quasi traditional bore sight by leveling the rifle to point at a door knob across my dining room, living room, and down a hall about 20+ yards away, a technique I've used a lot and have had great success with but always had to adjust the scope some, and with this one it was dead on.

looks good. I like that shade of green but Id probably still buy the optifade if I was getting a Mtn ascent.

So only had time to shoot two of the four rounds I'd bought today. Tried the Nosler 165 Partitions first. Pretty consistent 1.25-1.5" groups. Somewhat dissapointing, but not near as much as the 2 FTE's in 14 rounds. Moved on to the Federal 180 Partitions and to my surprise got it easily down to under 1", probably around .85"ish. They also ejected "vigorously" as noted by both me and my buddy shooting with me. They consistently flew 4-5 ft to the side whereas the Noslers that ejected went a foot or so. Pleased with that for now I pulled out the chrono and averaged 2531 FPS over 3 shots, not bad when Federal claimed 2570 out of a 24" barrel. Overall very pleased. Very little kick and the noise isn't even as much as my 338WM without a brake. I'm still going to give the other two partition factory loads a chance but it may be a few weeks.

For factory ammo, mine shot the 180gr. Fusions well.

Stock color has always been my number one concern when shopping for a hunting rifle

I'm tracking with ya on stock color, it's just the original optifade pattern looked terrible to me and is not all applicable down here. Here that'd just look like a scream for attention. I just wanted a light rifle with glass that I wanted. The accuracy today is well within my standards for a rifle for this area. I'm not shooting wings off a fly at 500 yards, I'm shooting deer within 300 yards.

As for the threaded barrel, a couple things. I'm used to hunting with my 338WM (overkill is underrated), and today both I and my buddy agreed the brake'd 308 was no louder than the 338WM. The other negative is the added length, but then the Kimber is still right at 2.75" shorter than the 338 with out a brake. For now I'm leaving it on.

If you need a brake on a 308, I'd find another sport

JFC, I just said I've hunted the last couple years with a 338WM without a brake. You think I'm worried about recoil? Or maybe it's my 375 Ruger I'm scared of. No wait, must be my 458WM I shoot from the bench that I have zero need for but just like having.
