Today, I was looking through a Gun, Special Order Catalog. I was looking at the Ruger M77's and noticed that a 350 Rem Mag can be purchased for $50 less than any of the other M77's. Why is this?

Must be a typo. .350 mag almost always brings a premium price tag.

Weagle
Don't know why it would be less, I paid the same as regular Rugers for mine. I like it. It's the all weather and is very accurate. I am very happy with it. If you are looking for one I'd jump on it.
Wholesale Sports up here list the 350 Mag at $50 less than the others too.....strange......
My Ruger 77 in 350 Rem Mag is at least 20 years old.....maybe older.I wouldn't worry about the price.....if you are looking for a .350 , I'm sure you'll be very pleased with it.I have an extensively worked over 700 in .35 Whelen as well. For all practical purposes theirs not much to chose between them.
The rifle is ugly, it kicks too hard, accuracy is poor and doesn't kill game well.

Ted
Yukoner,

I believe this is the first time I have ever heard anyone say any 35 cal "doesn't kill game well."

I am NOT trying to start an argument. But, I am curious. Can you share some experiences?
Grady,

I think Yukoner was just being facetious.

I guess that is a bit obvious.

Just having some fun, Grady.

I am a big 35 cal fan. My lovely wife of 38 years shoots a 358 Win on a Model Seven, and I have a Husqvarna in 358 Norma mag.

No argument here, the 35s are pure poison on big game. In fact Marg's 358 kills every bit as well as my 358 NM at ranges up to 200 yds.

The 350 Rem mag is a great game cartridge.

Now, having said that, do you really think the Ruger is ugly?

Best,
Ted
The only nit I find on that Ruger all-weather .350 is the poor recoil pad.
The 350 had me intrigued until I looked at the ballistics....

The 338 WinMag outperforms the 350 RemMag. Outperforms it bad. Neither touch the energy of the 375H&H at 100 yards.

Look:

Energy (ft-lbs)
Cartridge Type Bullet Muzzle 100 200 300 400 500
350 Mag: Remington Express 200 PSP CL 3419 2711 2122 1639 1250 947
338 Win Mag: Remington Express 225 PSP CL 3860 3305 2815 2383 2004 1676
375 H&H: Remington Express 270 SP 4337 3510 2812 2228 1747 1361

I couldn't do bullets to bullets, powder to powder...but the info is still telling.

...<snip>...

Well, that's not necessarily a bad thing. The .350 Rem Mag is basically a short, belted .35 Whelen that works in a short action. I don't own a .350 Rem Mag but I do own a .35 Whelen and a 9.3x62. I also own a .338 Win Mag and a .375 H&H. Yeah, I'm a medium bore junkie...

The .35 Whelen and the 9.3x62 pack some serious power but kick less and are more pleasant to shoot than my .338 and .375. The .35 Whelen and 9.3 won't reach out quite as far as the .338 and the .375 but they still pack some serious punch.

And frankly, I don't like to shoot at a big game animal much past 200 yards anyway. I simply don't get enough time to practice at the range so I'm not comfortable shooting much past 200 yds at game. 2400-2500 fps, like the .35 Whelen and 9.3x62 with their heavy bullets, will reach out to 200 or so yards without any problem.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the .338 and .375; I really like mine. Both are great cartridges. But, I also like my .35 Whelen and 9.3x62. (The .350 Rem Mag would be very much the same thing.) To me, they're just a little more "user friendly" and pleasant to shoot than my .338 and .375.

My two cents....

I'm not quite sure what all the hype is about the 350 kicking too much, mine kicks less than any of my other rifles including the .270, .30.06 .35 whelen etc... and that's with full on power loads. It's such a joy and pleaure to shoot and carry that I forgot any other gun exists so forget all the hype and BS and failed opinions go for what you like. Try one !
350s are Lucky, That's all. Bill

You are looking at a factory 200 grain Remington Core-Lokt load which by the way works very well on medium sized game up to the size of black bears, deer and hogs.

The 350RM loaded up w/ a 225 grain premium bullet or better yet a 250 grain bullet is a flat out power house inside 200 yards. It has an advantage over the 338WM that it efficiently reaches maximum velocities on a very short barrel. I'd definitely give the nod to the 338 on longer range power, but for up close on big stuff I doubt you'll find the 350RM lacking.

Many argue that the current available factory 350RMs lack enough mag box length to take full advantage of the 250 grain bullet. My take is that you can easily open up a standard Ruger mkII using factory parts to feed a 375H&H/458Lott cartridge and therefore can easily modify (if needed) the mag box to load a 250 grain premium bullet at full load in the factory mkII short action Ruger. Factors of recoil are weight of bullet, weight of rifle, charge of powder and velocity of projectile. Though the 350RM does have recoil at max load in a light rifle, it does use less powder than many other magnum cartridges and therefore does not recoil as bad in a light to medium weight rifle as many would have you believe.

I guess I need to catch some of you guys at the range who love to shoot the BIG BORES. Maybe I can shoot a couple of them and gain an apprecation.....

At this point, the biggest I would consider would be a 375H&H, which is on my list to purchase.
