Saw one of these at a local pawn shop. Guess it's the first 788 Carbine I've ever come across. They were asking $550 with a junk scope on it. Neat little rifle, but what do you guys think it's worth? I've seen 788s for a lot less around here. Are the carbines that rare to bring the extra bucks?

Not necessarily rare, just great rifles!

Unless it's a 30-30 or 44 Mag, then it's rare.

I see 788 carbines in 308 and 243 every now and then. I havent seen a 708 in a long time, I believe it was only offered in the carbine version.

Backtracking. I think you're right Jericho. I don't believe I've ever seen a 788, 7-08. That might be a very rare carbine indeed..

They made the 7-08 / 788 Carbines only in the year they were discontinued. I bought the last one for sale in my area at a local Gibson's store. Seems like it was around 1981 or 1982, but I may miss it by a year or two.
Anyway, they didn't make many of them. Mine was a accurate SOB. I gave it to one of my nephews for his first deer rifle and he still hunts with it.

Solid, dependable, accurate rifles. If I had one I'd cherish it, but I wouldn't pay $550 for one. Magazines are expensive and getting hard to find.

I picked up a 788 in 308 with 3x9 vortex a few weeks ago for $225 out the door the stock was a little beat up but wth probably never run across another deal like that

Actually, the 7mm08 is one of the ones collectors look for as they are on the rare side. Not as rare as the 44 or 30-30, but close. A few years ago $550 was a normal price for one in that round, with 4650-$750 being asked at times. Since the market is soft, you should be able to get them down some.

If they were only made 1 year, it could be more rare than the 30-30 and the 44. Those had a 3 year run. (68-70 I believe.)

I have seen maybe 2 in 44 magnum and 1 in 30-30 over the years. I owned a 708 about 15 years ago and if I remember correctly I sold it for 475
Got a buddy that collects 788's. We saw two .44 mags at the big Tula Show this year. One looked like it had been used for a sledge hammer. It was priced at $1200. The other one was pristine. It was priced at $2000.
I saw a 30-30 at a local show two years ago. The dealer wanted $1100 for it.

Whaaaaat? I'm betting they didn't get off the table and walk out!!!!

Let's see what the market thinks they're worth...., "No reserve"

Seen a 788 awhile back whose previous owner found out about expensive mags also. He pop riveted a piece of brass toilet tank chain to the bottom of the mag and wood screwed the other end to the forend.... GD still makes me Laugh my ass off when I think of it.. MB

I guess $550 is a good price. 788 7-08 Carbine sold at $605 on GunBroker today. (The same price a 788 30-30 sold a day before.)

I believe the 788 was the lower end version of Rems, correct?
Here is live firing of a Weaver Quik Shot scope (Grandfather of the red dot 1972) o a 788 in .308 Caliber last week-end.
I just got this one cleaned up and dialed in at range for a friend of the family. The "dot" is about 11mm big.

Correct on low-end of the line. And a damned good gun!

The Remington 788 has a rear-locking bolt that employs 9 locking lugs, giving a short 60* bolt lift. This makes the rifle slightly faster to operate than 2-lug designs with a 90* bolt lift. More room for scope clearance and a substantially stronger lock up, AND because the locking lugs are located behind the magazine well, the bolt travel is shortened, all resulting in a stiffer action Equipped with a clip rather than an internal magazine, many hunters prefer carrying extra loaded clips to stuffing singles into a small loading port. Try doing this with gloves on.

From Wikipedia:
The second distinguishing feature is the receiver. It has a smaller ejection port than similar bolt-action rifles, and no bolt lug raceways. The single stack magazine design yields a smaller feed opening in the bottom of the receiver compared to rifles using a double stack magazine well. When machining of these smaller ports is complete there is more steel remaining in the receiver between the ejection port and adjacent feed port, and significantly more steel overall where all receivers have the least strength. These characteristics combined to make the Remington 788 receiver more rigid and stronger than most, if not all, competing designs, including the Remington 700 which shares the same outside receiver diameter. A rifle's accuracy tends to increase slightly as the rigidity of the receiver increases, as this slightly reduces barrel deflection during firing. Thus the Remington 788 has the structural foundation to be a very accurate rifle.

Less expensive, perhaps. Low end, hardly! Many savvy riflemen have known for years the 788 out-performs the 700 in almost every category, including accuracy. (it's just not "prettier")

I've always liked the 788 Remington. No way I would pay north of $500 for one. Maybe $300 or so depending on condition. And I don't care how rare it is.
Dang! Need to put optic on my ol'.243 and hunt it this fall. Got it for Christmas '73.
