I'm kicking around the idea of rebarrelling a .308w to a varmint calibre, perhaps a .22/250 improved or a custom 7x39 Ackley.

But other than the .308 family of cartridges .260, .7-08, etc (I'd like to go to a smaller capacity) - I don't know which other cases would be compatable with the .308 bolt face.

Any Idea's <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

250 Savage, 257 Roberts, 6mm Remington plus the improved versions of them and all the assorted cats...
Add to that list; 30BR, 7mmBR, 6mmBR,etc. Rick.
any cartridge with a 473 head size. without knowing what action you have and the configuration of the mag box and feed rails, the next question is the feeding issue.
243 AI
6 mm AI
22/250 AI

any of these would do

6X284, 6.5X284, 250 Savage, 22 Cheeta, some high performence cartridges and an old favorite.
Several of the above suggestions have a greater capacity than the 308. The 22-250 is a great varmint round, but will basically restrict you to a varminter.

To me, a classy, wise, and unrestricted round, that would allow you to handle medium size game too, would be the 250 Savage. It still reigns king as an improved cartridge too.
The 8" twist 6BR continues to appeal to me......................
I have had lots of fun on small rodents with the 22-250AI and the 22 Cheetah. Either of these would be an easy conversion and a real hoot to play with.
Thanks for the suggestions so far.
I'm sort of leaning to the 7x39 - cheap supply of 7.62x39 shells to neck down, better ballistics and accuracy than the original, I think. Easy on throat erosion, recoil.
Anyone know offhand if this shell suits the .308w bolt face?
It's smaller than the 308's boltface.................
Quick break:

Stick, have you played with that 6mm AI yet? I have a wicked desire for one..
Nope, too much other stuff to shoot.

Just can't get Mouser horned up,on any level........................

I wonder which is considered to be the better cartridge?
I'd sort of imagine it to be the .243 AI... and isn't the .6mm Rem on its way out?
