Saw one of these at Dick's Spt Goods (very tempting at $499) last night and now have an itch for a .308. Anyone have one of these? Looks pretty sweet and with a 20" heavy barrel should be accurate. They also had one in 6.5 Creedmoor which many feel is a better caliber. I believe I'd rather have the 308 for an occasional elk. Thoughts?

Hmmm. I'm not familiar with this model. What kind of stock are they putting on it? I take it that it's somewhat like the SPS-Tactical which wears a 20" varmint weight barrel, BDL metal, and Hogue stock.
Hogue stock with blind magazine. From what I can tell it was a special run just for Dicks.

Interesting. 20" or 22" on the Creedmoor?
I believe it was a 24". Info on these is basically non-existent.

A $500 new 700 varmint-weight Creedmoor barreled action is not a bad thing.

Regarding your question though, the 20" .308 models are known for being solid. I just bedded a 20" SPS-T version in an LTR take-off for a buddy and it is boringly accurate with just about everything we've shot through it. It actually shot well in the Hogue stock too.
What I wanted to hear.........I think, now I may need another rifle.

How much velocity do you lose from a 24" barrel? Is the old 50 fps / in rule about right for .308?

It depends on the load, but it's more like 20-25fps per inch in this case (24" down to 20")

Barrel cut back

I have factory Remington barrels/chambers in 308 at 20", 22", 24", 26" and 27 1/4" and with a variety of loads 25 fps per inch is just about right.
I had a 2" 308 one for a long time, Actually, I still do but it hardly gets out these days. I picked it up several years ago (~2009) when I wanted to get into long range shooting but just didnt have the $$$ to drop on much more. I ended up putting a different trigger in it, vortex viper (forget which viper and which rings), then ended up getting a take off stock from a 700 5r, bedding it and I actually used to shoot it out to 800yds. My biddy who was a very serious long distance guy always commented on how well the thing shot for the $$$ compared to his guns that came in at the 6000+ dollar range.

I think all in, I had about 1200 dollars into mine and it was way more accurate than anything I needed at the time. If I remember correctly, again, its been years, it didnt feed for [bleep] so it was basically a single shot rifle.
