Earlier today I made a thread about which rifle whether it was the carbon light the Ridgeline or the Field craft. After fondling all three of them today I have decided to go with the field craft. My longest shot will be five or 600 yards and realistically in the 200-300 yard range. This rifle will be used for everything from white tails and coyotes in the east to elk in the west and moose in Alaska. The questionnaires 308 or 30-06?
Creedmore...I heard the Scandavians killed the hell out of moose with a roundnose out of a 6.5x55.
Of those two I would go 308
Of those two, 308 gets my vote. However, while my needs essentially mirror what you listed, minus Moose, I’m thinking 6.5 Creedmoor.
If I could afford to hunt every kind of big game(and coyotes) all over the country then surely I could find a way to pack TWO different rifles. But if I gotta choose one of those for moose and elk, and whatever giant bear I might accidentally run across, I'll take a 30-06 😂
Ha, if I have to stay on topic 308 for sure...
6.5 unless your worried about big bears charging. Then 06 with 220's. JMO
Fieldcraft lists their ten model configuarations at between 5 and 6 pounds. Consideringt a 6# '06 with scope and rings may go something under 7#'s, I think you would grow weary of that recoil with a 180 gr bullet. I'd say a good compromise would be the .308 Win..
Yes. As much as I like the -06, the Fieldcraft would not be my choice of platform.
Go 308, 7-08, or 6.5 Creed

Not sure I understand the “... longest shot will be five or 600 yards and realistically in the 200-300 yard range.” Is that saying 500-600 yards is unrealistic for you to make? You did say you will be making a 500 or 600 yard shot.
Do you reload? 308 if don’t 30-06 MAYBE if you do.
In a rifle as light as the Fieldcraft, the 30-06 is going to let you know it's there............
I own a 375 HH for real big stuff.
Most shots will be 200-300 but some opportunity for 500-600 wil practice to further but just practice.
RE-THINK
the .06 will kick the crap out of you, .308, meh
6.5 Creedmoor
just for grins, what optic you going with for those 600 yards shots?
I don’t have a FC in 30/06, but I do have a NULA in said caliber. I don’t consider it obnoxious at all.
Probably something vortex since they support veterans or the Swarovski z5 I have here
30-06 between these two but .300 Win is still My favorite........Hb

It's not bad at all. It will be more than a .308 (and 6.5), but it won't be awful. The ~1 lb difference in a long action '06 with a 24" #2 over a short action with a shorter barreled #1 eats up a bit of the recoil difference.

I have a Forbes in 30-06 and it doesn't kick bad at all.
I like the 300 win. Just no available in the Field craft. Recoil is subjective. I’m 6’5 300 so I absorb some recoil
30-06... only because of the no.2 barrel contour. If the 308 had the same contour that would be my choice.
You can't go wrong with the 308, I still have a couple and use 155 scenars in all of them. I'm just really liking my mild mannered 6.5CM. I'm looking hard at a fieldcraft in 6.5CM now too.
270 Win....is there really any other sensible choice?
The ONLY reason to drop the serious coin on a Barrett is to get a 5lb gun. If you want a 6 oound sythetc stocked rifle , buy a Tikka or a RAR and put the money saved into some good glass or save it for your retirement..:)
That rules out the long actioned cals.
I'd go .308

Not 100% sure about the 308 vs '06 as I haven't weighed them, but it is far less than a pound difference on the 6.5s. FC creed is 5.35 oz; FC swede is 5.90 oz on my scale.
No question, the 30-06 would be the best way to go for your needs.

Is that a 5.5 oz difference or .55 lb (8.8 oz) difference? There should be ~4 oz difference just for the action, plus a heavier contour at 3 more inches. ...thinking on it, 9 oz sounds about right.
I'll weigh an '06 later today.
It is 5.5 OZ JC.
Original post should have read 5 pounds 3.5 ounces on creed; 5 pounds 9 ounces on sweed.
Either would work, but I'm thinking the longer barrel and slightly higher weight might be appreciated to cut recoil a bit. You can always load down a bit, but going higher is tough. If compactness is a big factor for you, then clearly. .308
Either will be a handfull off the bench.
I do have an 06 but haven't spent any time with it. Had experience with a NULA that's about the same in 06 as well.
Forgot I had this AKwolverine. 06 weights 5 lbs 9.2 oz with a Talley rail. Short action (6.5 CM) is 5 lbs 0.6 oz without a rail....short action rail is 1.9 oz. About 6.7 oz difference between the two? They are really close....way closer than I thought.
