Ruger American or TC Venture for a cheap walk about 22/250 varminter? Quality, accuracy, function. You know.
Posted By: chlinstructor Re: RAR or Venture? - 12/08/17
You couldn't go wrong with either of those. I like the Ruger a little better, but that's just my personal preference. Both are well built for the money and are highly praised for their accuracy. You can probably by the TC Venture a little cheaper than the Ruger, though.

If you don't mind the extra weight the T/C Venture. There are many satisfied Venture owners here on the fire.

The fast twist special run RAR from Whittaker Guns.

If SS would be a plus, you're stuck with the Ruger. Prices on those seem to be creeping up though. I paid a bit more and got a Hawkeye All Weather, which is what I really wanted anyway.

Camo Venture or Venture Weathershield. I feel the stock is of better quality. Lack of anything aftermarket if that worries you.

Venture.

Venture. You could shoot a coyote a mile away or club a varmint to death and not feel bad about it.
Posted By: 260Remguy Re: RAR or Venture? - 12/08/17
If you could get by with either a 223 or a 243, the Remington 700 ADL package guns at Wal-Mart sell for around $400.

If you could get by with a 243, CDNN still has a few Marlin XS7 on sale for $240.
Posted By: DakotaDeer Re: RAR or Venture? - 12/08/17
If you could buy used and take a little time looking, you could get nearly any model you wanted.

Of the two mentioned, neither. Spend more money and get a Tikka T3 at least.

My .22-250 Venture shoots great. Right in there pitchin with my Tikka at .5 - .75" at 100 with factory ammo. The trigger Sucked with a capital "S" out of the box. Heavy and creepy. It is fully adjustable but the trigger return spring was too stiff to go below 5 lbs. so I had to disassemble and install a lighter spring to get it where I wanted. Now it's 2.5 lbs and breaks like a glass rod so all is well.

That's what I was afraid of with the TC. I can over look a lot,but a carp trigger is a deal breaker.

I just went and checked that out. Pretty cool. Years ago I had Texas Trophy Hunter fever. This could conceivably scratch that itch. Ill have to do a little research of the heavier .22 pills. Sweet.

I've done the 22-6mm in a 1-14" ROT rechambered Winchester 22-250 barrel and have done the 22-243 Middlestead with a 1-12" ROT Hart or Shilen barrels twice. Both cartridges ate throat as if the barrels were made of butter. Even with judicious use, the barrels were cooked in less than 1,000 cycles, the CM barrel on the 22-6mm probably within 700. As with most things in life, there are trade-offs in that you have to give something up, like barrel life, to get what you want, an uber-fast .224" bore rifle.

I sold my Venture because it was just too heavy. I feel the same way about Vanguards.

I believe the T/C Venture trigger is adjustable. Most rifle triggers can be dealt with personally or professionally,,, the guns platform should be a priority in your decision and the T/C Venture stock is better than most.

Went and handled them both yesterday. The Venture is a heavy sucker, but otherwise seems well made. The Ruger feels a little better in hand, but I do think the stock could be better. Hey, for the money, they both are pretty decent. Twist rate could come into play. The Whittaker special comes to mind. Gonna hit the used ads locally as well. ADLs and SPS sound good, but the twist rates could be better. At least in the 22/250. As was mentioned, the T3,maybe even a used one, does make sense. Ah the things we find to do after deer season.

How much does the Venture weigh? I have picked them up before and they didn't register as heavy.
Posted By: verhoositz Re: RAR or Venture? - 12/10/17
Looked at GB last nite waiting on the BH to raid the leftovers for dinner while I fight a cold ...saw some Ventures in 280's and ? 7-08's - my next targeted calibers to buy - at under $400 and TC still has the $75 Rebate available thru 12/31. Had a blued Venture 270 squirrel'd away umm 18 months ago that got gone in a trade deal to pay for a NIB Marlin XL 7 Stainless 270, that is also still squirrle'd away, and never thought of the Venture as a "heavy" gun & just not crazy about the 24" barrel though...but IS a tad heavier than the Marlin feels in my hands. Always liked the the RAR's about like the Mossberg Patriots..ie...not too much ...but either would make a good swamp shooter to paddle the pirouge with in a pinch and not worry too much about it.

Camo 22-250 is 6.75# and Weathershield 22-250 is 7# according to TCs website.

Just right, not so light to bobble all over while trying to shoot a 300 yard coyote.

That's not heavy in my book. That's just right. My Howa 1500 is what I would call heavy. Or it was before I put an Edge on it.

It's not heavy. Seven pounds even. Just alot of old weaklings here I reckon.

I picked up a venture compact 243 for the "grandkids" a few years ago and it has become my favorite rifle in the woods. I am really liking the short barrel in treestands and shooting houses. The trigger in it was good right out of the box. It loves the now discontinued Federal deer thug 95 grain bonded and also does well with federal fusion. 100 yard three shot group with the deer thug ammo, pretty hot barrel.

My RAR is one of the best firearm purchases I have made. It is well made, nice action and extremely accurate. One of the best things about it is how NOT picky it is. It will shoot 1/2 to 3/4 inch with Varget, H322, H335 and W748. Varget with a 55grn Vmax seems to be the best combo. It will shoot all 4 powders very close to the same POI. My biggest complaint is the stock, the comb is low so I fixed that with a Kydex riser. It is an awesome utility rifle, predator calling rifle, range rifle.......you name it. It goes to the range with me just about every trip and I use it for scouting early in the season before predator calling season gets in full swing.
