It's not. The 270 is still the cartridge to which all others are compared.
As per usual, the first response on the thread is the correct one.
It goes back to early tongue-in-cheek Campfire razzle, humorous in intent and recognized as such by the majority of rational rifle loonies. (Now there's a contradiction in terms!) Taken as an affront by thin-skinned users not in on the joke.
It was "projection" on the part of some insecure 7x57 nutjobs.
An old joke, all in good humor.
Way before this became a thing, a friend of mine starting referring to his 270 Finnbear as a "girl's -06" because it kicked less but still killed deer and elk quite well with 160 Partitions.
Quit shooting elk with his old 308 Norma Mag...
As per usual, the first response on the thread is the correct one.
It's pure sarcasm......
It's a joke, started before I joined the fire.
Of course, I cant let it go at that.... If you notice, just about every time a cartridge, caliber, new gun, old gun, etc. that is used for deer sized game is talked about, it is compared to a 270. So I guess you could say it is the standard, all round, only one needed deer, elk, antelope, etc. rifle. Even the Poobah shoots a 'baby' 270.
Ordered a 1:8" .277" bbl yesterday. I don't think it will turn me.
It was "projection" on the part of some insecure 7x57 nutjobs.
Dare I venture a guess "WHO" started that. Maybe he wore Leopard print thongs ??

Don't know. I have two in the safe (one Weatherby and 1 Winchester), but they've not come out yet.

I see what you did there.
Better not tell Jack the .270's gay, he might field dress you on the spot.

Your projection is showing.
Just because they went metric and called it the 6.8, it doesn't make the gay go away.
It's kinda like when you were a kid and got into "cut down" fights with your buddies. It's the last resort as an insult.....

That's what she said.
It's not. Those who make that claim are repressing their own tendencies in that direction.
Thanks Steelhead, had not seen this one but read much of his OL stuff when I was a kid. Always thought of him as a great man...regardless of detractor. Seemed he popularized the .270 for many. Mac
As much as Jack wrote about the 270,he thought the 30-06 was better.I have to agree.
On his favorite cartridges...."The .30-06, the .270, the .375, and the .416. Now you're going to ask me 'In what order?' In that order."~Jack O'Connor~

It is so because the Grand Poobah has declared it. The reasons are irrelevant.
Mathman:
I see what you did there.
It was soooo obvious, someone had to do it, and I don't store mine in a closet.
Have a good one,
because it easier to say "gay" than queerer than a three dollar bill.
I have never owned a 270 but I did develop a load for a friend of mine.
Now my friend is a life long hunter and fisherman and has a fairly hot wife and two kids. After reading these threads for years I developed the opinion that he must be compensating or covering for his gayness. Now, I've never seen any other indication of gayness, but he shoots a 270, so isn't that enough? By reading these threads it did seemed so.
As I developed the loads for the 270 and shot the rifle I was watching for an extreme case of erectile dysfunction. Also I was guarding against the possibility of developing a compulsion to buy a pair of loafers. Neither thing actually happened. Nor did I have any inclination to put on my wife's bra and panties or use her lipstick.
So that makes me question the validity of these threads.
Shhh! No need to go messin' with the status quo. It'll just make it harder to find great rifles and cheap ammo.

.270 shooters...
I rest my case....
Just because they went metric and called it the 6.8, it doesn't make the gay go away.
I call my 6.8 SPC a .270 Short so I don't have to explain it. Gay it's not.

I like my 270, but I wouldn't buy a new one......
It's not. The 270 is still the cartridge to which all others are compared.
The best answer, and very true. It's 93 years old, and still hasn't really been topped.
I don't really believe this business that some cartridges are inherently accurate but some are inherently gay, the 270 proves it. I mean not that there's anything wrong with that, live and let live and all. The 270 win can still be a productive member of society its just gay that's all
I think the 270 has unresolved parent issues. It's dad was always the best all-around, and people decided it was for shooting light bullets, and then it was labeled a "ladies' cartridge". But those who know the 270 and who ask it to do man's work know it can hold its own doing very manly tasks, like making Boddington eat his criticism.

I like all four of mine.
I'll be rediscovering the .270 here in the next week or two - as well as discovering that I'm slowly but surely turning into my father.
I have owned a couple of them. They are a great game rifles for some people, but I do not believe that it is the be all end all G.O.A.T. The only thing that makes the cartridge gay is the shooter who cries that it kicks to hard!!!!!!!
Damn, I guess I’m gay. I have four!!

Yes sir. A handful of campfire members fondled it at SCI last week - the mischievous bastids were sure to send me some taunting picts of them holding the thing.
Only thing I see bad about the .270 is when I was a kid, the ones that talked about it the most where the biggest windbags about their trucks, their house and even their jobs, So I assumed that the .270 was just hot air and carried a .30-06 as a 12-15 year old. Then moved up in caliber til I got it right finally when my pop turned his 7x57 over to my possession!!!!!!!!

Good thing I’m a .280 addict!
Guess my old Savage flat back 270 would now be better classified as having CICS....caliber identity crisis syndrome...rather than being gay. It switches between 22-250 heavy barrel and 270 but can't decide.

Nature:nurture, always the question.
W.D.M. Bell and Jim Corbett both used the 7x57....no more needs to be said!
Bell used a 7mm mauser, but stated he prefered his .256 bore Mannlicher and found
his .303 and .318 a superior choice to both of those in some circumstances,
JIm Corbett, had someone not gifted him a 7x57 he might never have used one.
he killed the bulk of his cats with a .450-400 SxS.

That would have been ample time for both Bell and Corbett...both were actively shooting into the 1940s....
But they chose good taste and decorum over flagrant flamboyance..
The hunting for which Bell was well known was done prior to the 270's introduction. Corbett's man-eater hunts stretched into 270 era, but the cartridge likely wasn't available in India during that time.

We had a BALL !
Sadly he passed in Dec. 2017

A military sniper team armed with a plastic stocked .270....
A suitable .270 Win target.
That would have been ample time for both Bell and Corbett...both were actively shooting into the 1940s....
But they chose good taste and decorum over flagrant flamboyance..
Bells military Lee Enfield based .303 bolt rifles were described by him as being far from what he considered
good taste and decorum...Being the experienced pragmatic man he was, the .303 at times became the prime
weapon of choice in circumstances where his bespoke English and European rifles had failed him.
Disappointing for some 7x57 looneys I know,...but the 7 mm Mauser- M98 combo was not the 'be all-end all'
in Bells eyes... the sheer reliability of DWM ammunition was a major decisive factor that convinced him to use
7x57 as often as he did.
Dan,
is the rifle rest guy coming up for air?

Digital dan...was reading capstick not long ago and someone did shoot an elephant with a 270. Took the bullet out of the case and pushed it in backwards for sort of a solid and shot it in the forehead. Sounded like an emergency, guy had to pull the bullet with his teeth while one of his people was being confronted by the jumbo.
That target can't be obama, it has balls.

Gay or not,it's going to be living here soon. I heard a rumor Kimber was dropping the Classic, and I didn't have one yet. If it's half the rifle my Classic Select is,Ill be tickled. 270 or not.

My friend Roy calls bullchips on that. You don't wanna pizz him off.
Capstick's .270 and elephant story was taken directly from an old story in True Magazine.
Ok, then maybe he was repeating the story to back up his own, I don't recall the details of how he used it...it was not a first person story of his
I always heard that people who didn't own a 270 were gay.
By “gay”,you meant “happy” ....correct! Happy you didn’t make a bad choice!
The term started way back. Jack and Elmer were at a gun writer's convention. They both had been hitting the sauce at the dinner, and the stories were getting pretty tall. Finally Elmer could not take Jacks constant rambling about the 270 any longer. Elmer stood up and yelled at Jack, take that stupid little hat you wear and that gay rifle you always use and get the *!@K out of here. Elmer was the first to believe that the 270 is gay.

And you own and are proud of this story? The man who is supposed to have acted that way is an idol for many here? I hope the story isn't true, and I doubt it, but if it is, Elmer's lucky he wasn't spitting out teeth at some point from getting bashed in the mouth with the butt of a gay rifle by a man with a stupid little hat.
Storys true, I heard it on the internet.

Here is your answer Jack.
It's not. The 270 is still the cartridge to which all others are compared.
That's not the way I heard it, that claim belongs to the 30-06.

And I never owned on until a few years ago.....but I’m plenty old enough enough to know “what set the standard”!
Capstick wrote a lot from a bar stool......
And I would have loved to be on the one next to him.
Storys true, I heard it on the internet.

As I Remember Capstick
By Tink Nathan
"Peter told me of his amazing life....
In one of his books, Peter wrote that he had weekly letters from young Americans who aspired to become a
professional hunter in Africa. Peter said in print an American would have a better chance of winning the Victoria Cross
than to become a professional hunter in Africa....
...Peter was a giant of a man, with a heart as big as Africa, yet strong and straight as a new arrow. With out a doubt,
Peter was one of the finest, if not the finest writer of our age. A man who turned his back on fortune, the family Hathaway
shirt business, and went of into the jungles of Viet Nam to fight in freedoms name as a green beret officer,
an American special forces soldier, and to Africa to fulfill a childs dream. Peter, you did it all so bloody well too.
You never got a client killed, you never got tossed in jail and you never stepped on a mamba. You lived your life,
every seconds worth to THE MAX, and you were a gentleman the whole time. You were a mans man, a man that
women lionized, and you did America proud. You showed Africa just what could do when the chips were down.."

That was a Remington 700 "C" Grade from their custom shop. One of the few I regret selling. Bought it cheap and sold it for filthy lucre during a period of financial embarrassment.
Beautiful wood and one of the best triggers orf all the Remingtons I've owned.
ya!
GWB
BTW, that was a "two-fer at +/- 170 yds with factory 140 gr. Cor-Lokts IIRC.
Thnx Gee

So, I had a .270 when I was a Senior in High School.
I promptly sold it and joined the Marines.
Was I just compensating?
Sheesh...then in Boot Camp I had an M-16 locked onto the foot of my bunk. If the .270 is gay, the 5.56 is a Eunuch.

Shot a deer on the point of the shoulder. Didn't recover it. Where is the proof it was hit on the point of the shoulder? This guy really needs to find a new hobby.
For all those that think the 270 is gay ..........
It's obvious the 270 fans can't spell, I wonder if they can count to potato...........
For all those that think the 270 is gay ..........
Yep - that’s queer !
Jerry
I like my 270, but I wouldn't buy a new one......
I like all four of mine.
This might be ironic.
Sometimes one is all you need. But since it's my favorite cartridge, one is not enough. I will admit, however, that thinking back over the last dozen big-game animals taken, only two have fallen to the 270 Win. Seems I've shifted to short actions subconsciously, with the 260Rem and 308 taking over half the dozen. Platform is the most likely reason, since I tend to favor lighter stuff these days.
Not sure what that may suggest...
Several women on my lease hunt with 270’s. They think this 270 gay cshit is funny.
Made a shot once at about 1150 yards with the 7.62x51. Anyone done that with a .270?
Well, I'm waiting.

Yes —- I’ve shot at least 1151 yds. I hit the EARTH
.
Jerry

...probably gonna wait a while. But, in the meantime, my compliments on your choice for a quote source. Kinda tough to top Ambrose and the Devil's Dictionary, too.
Made a shot once at about 1150 yards with the 7.62x51. Anyone done that with a .270?
Why would it matter?
Well I thank you for the responses, I was growing concerned that my words had scared people off this fundamentally important discussion.
FLNative, thanks. I vacillate between Bierce and Twain. They were both very insightful gentlemen burdened with a sharp wit.
Jwall, I hit more than Earth. Them phuocers were shooting at me and my buddies; a rather costly mistake if I may say so. Widows and orphans may have been born as a result, but I declined to research background of the departed after the fact. In fairness I must say I was belt fed and toting 6 barrels. OTOH, I did not use any sighting device. Hoses don't require such oddities.
Southtexas, it matters 'cause the .270 never showed up to fight for the stars 'n bars, apple pie and all that. All those years and it never showed. Hell, there were pigs over there too! If'n it had tried to abscond with my wench(s) in my absence I would have sorta understood, but it didn't even do that. The only thing I can conclude; it's gay as gay can be. Flamin' gay even.
xin loi
How about 228 yards, would that count DD?
I dunno. We talkin' about a .270 and jacks or makin' a cactus blossom wilt with a well aimed fart?
The cactus blossom wilt at 228 yards.
That is awesome! I am humble in your presence!
I'd rather hunt Mountain Lions with a pack of Pomeranian's.

Dude, don't ferget to sell tickets. -Rollin' here-
The 270 is a good cartridge, but nothing extraordinary compared to others similar in speed/diameter/weight. It's hardly versatile as it comes in only 2 weight options. Its simply popular because it got promoted by a celeb, Jack doesn't hunt anymore and neither does Michael Jordan play basketball but both still have a huge fan base. Nike Jordan shoes or 270 Win.... Same marketing principles.
If Jack chose the 280, it would have been what the 270 is today...he should have... if Jack chose the 300 Sherwood, it would have been the ducks nuts... doesnt matter... It's popular way beyond it's worth ... It's a spoilt brat getting a promotion in a company because of its director father. Use and enjoy .... Just don't tell your kids they wear Air Jordans because of Michael... And understand that untill Jack's generation passes on... There will be threads like these.

All this mean talk makes me sad. Hurting peoples feelings over life decisions we they make just isn't fair. Just because you all don't like the same things some other people like doesn't make it right to label or poke fun does it? I think we all need to be just a little more global in our understanding and a lot less dogmatic. Don't you think? I mean, I have a .270 and I'm not really gay.
Dude, work in your sense of humor.
And try black ink next time. A .270 goes with your text colors like a sunset rainbow.
Well, it is an old school red pad Ruger with a basic Burris non-twisty scope so I guess that takes a little of the lavender out.

Has the question of why is the 270 gay been answered yet? I always considered it more trans. They took a manly cartridge in the 30-06 and gave it a pussy.

The 110 mono interests me but I'm not yet convinced to try them. I have NO doubt they work well from ALL reports here.
I'd have to explore what powders used are giving the best vel/accuracy.
I'm well stocked on bullets & powder for what I use.... so there's part of the consideration.
I am NOT sure that I would gain anything by switching - bullets & powder ? ?
Jerry
My gay gun shoots the 110TTSX very well with IMR4350. Kills animules, too

The 110gr Barnes in the 270 is a killer diller. One of the most accurate loads I've ever shot.

But you need a change in twist rate for the heavy ones.... And when did all that versatility come about? Only recently... Before then it was all Jack's influence ... not to mention that it's an odd diameter that would have probably gone down the road without Jack
Some find Richard Simmons manly too.
Remember the Village People, those fudge packers from the 70s that sang YMCA and all those gay songs? 270 shooters each and every one of m. Not saying all 270 shooters are gay necessarily but the 270 cartridge is show tunes lovin condo decorator flaming friggin gay.
