So how looney is this:
restricts himself to three rifles, of which
1. the primary is a short magnum
2. the backup is a 243
3. the just because is a 223
4. #4 comes and goes but always leaves for another #4
I could roll with that if the short mag is a 6.5 or 7.

My battery is similar - 280ai, 260, 243. The little guns may eventually identify as their respective Creedmoor counterparts when the time comes to rebarrel.
Yeah I could easily make it with 3 rifles, if one has to be a short magnum my choice would be .300 WSM...I dont hunt varmints anymore so I have no use for a centerfire .22 cal but I would most certainly need a .22lr for Squirrel hunting and a straight wall cartridge of some sort to hunt Ohio's gun season.....I think for me 5 rifles, 3 shotguns and a muzzleloader would be better though...Ha!.....Hb
how looney is this? ......just because

restricts himself to three rifles, of which

1. the primary is a short magnum = 350 WSM/Sambar
2. the backup is a 243 = ok....shooting 95 Nosler BT's or 70 Nosler BT's depending on hunt
3. the just because is a 223 = ok as long as it's twisted 1-8" or faster
4. #4 comes and goes but always leaves for another #4 = for me it would be a good 30-30...that would probably stay more than go:)

thanks, Tom
6.5x55, 223, .22. If allowed, I would add a shotgun
I follow the logic, and won't disagree, but what fun would that be?
Rick
'06, 7x57, .250-3000.
I like three, but could reduce to two. .22 RF, .223 Rem., and my .375AI or my wife’s .338WM. I could drop the .223 Rem. The .22RF could be used for small to medium game, the bigger rifles for small game and varmints with cast bullets, or jacketed or mono bullets for all big game ( Whitetails thru the bigger stuff)! So.....if forced, I could go to one! memtb
I suppose you mean three center fire rifles. At my advanced age, my identical accurate rifles in .308 and .243 each loaded up or down, will do anything I need to do. Add a .223, and life will be easier. Then I must have a .22 RF and a couple of shotguns.

Very sensible battery.
I could do about all I need to do with one Center fire rifle and one rimfire. I'd take a 30/06 and a 22LR.
I have too many different types of hunting to confine myself to three. But I probably could get away with my 6.5X55 Swede and .22 LR. I'm just glad that I don't have to.
I don't have thousands and thousands of dollars tied up in my collection my primary is a Savage 111FL in the gay .270 followed by a sporterized 8x57 Turkish Mauser. My small guns would be my 2 Marlins in 357/44mag.
Throw in a 1950's Mossberg .22 ,and a few of their pump shotguns and I'm ready. All in we're probably under $2000 outlay over the years.
I do have the POF 308 AR that was a gift, but don't really think of it as a hunting rifle at +12# scoped, bipod,Sling, full magazine. I have taken it, but it's not going to be first choice due to it's heft. Its more of a range, steel, target banging, impact thereapy device.
I would like to get a long range bolt action rifle to play beyond 1000 yards, and a smaller rifle in .223 either another are or a bolt action. But really is I don't get enough trigger time as it is.
I've taken moose in Saskatchewan and elk in Wyoming with my older Savage 99 in .308 shooting plain old 180 grain Core-lokt ammo. None got away.

Sherwood
7mm-08
223 Rem
22LR

That’ll do the job
223
6.5 Creed
30-06
I've got more than three but if three was it:

30-06/308
6.5x55
243

I only load one bullet weight in each rifle but with these three I could do 55gr bullet's up to 200gr bullet's and handle anything in N. America.
Mine 3 rifle battery is pretty simple because I do not hunt big-game any more, the great majority of my shooting is ground squirrels (thousands of rounds annually), prairie dogs, and coyotes, and paper targets.
All I require is for my centerfires to be capable of consistent 1/2" - 3/4" groups at 100 yds and the rimfire to be capable of 1/2" to 3/4" groups at 50 yards.

22 L.R.
223 Rem
243 Winchester

All bolt actions.

drover
.22-250, 25/06 or .270, and .300WM....Worked most of my life..
Three rifles?!

I thought this was about three SAFES!😀
From some of the 700s I own already .........

- 223 1:8" BRUX sporter in a Bansner
- 257Roberts faux TI King bbl
- 30-06 BDL sporter in a B&C
22rf, 223, something 6.5mm or larger.
I assume you mean centerfire rifles. I must always have a fine 22lr.

I would use the same action and trigger in all.

For BG hunting I want something that moves a 130-150 grain bullet at around 3000. For me that means a 27 or 28 something (270 or 280 or 280 Ackley maybe 7 RM). 6.5’s are a little small and the 30’s are on the large size. All up 7# or less, 22” barrel. For BG in the lower 48 that is it.

For varmints I prefer a 6mm that goes fast so something like 6 Creedmore up to 6-284. Heavier and long, maybe 8 1/4# 25” barrel.

Dogger - I can't play because...

1. Short mags don't trip my switch.

2. It hurts my head trying to choose !! grin

Jerry
Hmmm

I would say:

.358 winchester

.260 remington

And a .22 hornet to round things out.
22lr (no brainer)
7mm-08 (or 6.5 Creedmoor)
30-06 (or 308 Win)

Pretty close.

22lr
260 rem
300WM
I'll try and play......

But I like em' tall and thin not Short Fat and rebated!

1. 7mm RSAUM

2. 6mm AI

3. 223

4. 25-280AI

Of course what we all really want is a Ultra Short, Ultra light weight, Ultra long range 6.5CM with a 9oz. 5-30x50mm & 34mm main tube scope mounted in NF rings;)
Pretty much the same here.

223
243
270

Go ahead and laugh at the 270. It's here, it's queer and I have to get used to it. I can get the appeal of having a schits and giggles #4. 6.5 CM CTR for me. If I were shopping.

I'd go with your three as easily as the three I listed. 270 and 243 were my first two centerfires. My gun cabinet had a 22lr, 243, 270, a 12 ga and nothing else for a very long time...thousands of dollars ago.
if I'm starting over 22, 223, 30-30.
Or maybe 22 Mag, (one of 243/6.5x55/6.5 Creedmoor), and 357.

The fourth could be any of the above or 45-70,, 30-06, 222, Hornet or 17HMR.
Most of the 4th would be new to me calbers, except the 30-06, and right now I got an eye on an old 03A3 sporter that if I bought i'd be stuck with, so 4 might be 5.
Long winter no doubt - 22lr or 17HMR, .270 WCF and 300WSM.
Doesn't matter in my case, all academic since I live in Ohio and can't use them
I need a third safe too. I have three and four of some calibers!
For the Lower 48 center-fire rifles, I think I would do:
1. 325 WSM / 338 Win
2. 7 WSM / 7mm Rem
3. 223 / 22-250
Actually, I would want the 6 above. The 4th category would be a 6.5 Creedmoor.
Many choices out there that serve the same function with the same results.

Ya can't unring a bell....

CTR 6.5CM in the old T3 stock with my modified Talkeys and a SWFA.

Bingo
223 Remington 270 Winchester 300 H&H
Hmmmm, tough choice amongst my calibers- .300WM, .30-06, .308, .28AI, .260, .22-250, .223, 22lr. But if I had to choose 3 primaries and 1 come and go:

1. .280AI - If I had to choose just one it would be one of my .280AI because of versatility of the bullet choices and ballistics, plus they're light and easy to carry.
2. .300WM
3. .260
4. .308 or .30-06

Does adding a 5th further define someone as a rifle looney?
5. 22lr- gotta have a rimfire.
Nothing looney about a 223 & 243!

A lot of practical lists, but once again, nothing looney.

A looney has:
222, 223, and 22-250
6mm Creed and a 243
7mm, 325 WSM, and 270, 30-06, 338win mag

How could I forget a 6.5 Creed?

3 rifle list is not even in a looney's vocabulary. grin
A Loony List ?

5 mm RFM
6mm Rem
7mm R Mag
8mm R Mag

Whadayasay ?

Jerry
i can get everything done w a .22 lr, a .223, and a .308. still have an irrational hard-on for the .250 savage

I remember you Thinnin tha herd.... but didn't 'think' you kept the Creed.

Jerry
I'd get by fine with a .22LR, .223 and .30-06. Hell I got by fine for years with a .22LR, .30-30 and 12 gauge and could do so again. I'd really miss my .22 mag.,.223, .22-250, .243 and 16 and 20 gauges though.
.22 LR
.270 Win
12 Ga.
.
In that order...

Oh, it's thin....

Never had a 6.5 CM, but damn if it isn't hard to ignore.
I’ve thought a few times about selling all my rifles and just having Melvin Forbes build me a .260 (or 6.5 CM), a 7mm WBY, and a .338 Win
My variant seems to be 3 pf each chambering....

Jerry
starting over cheap: ruger 10-22, 700 adl in 223 and 308

starting over : T1x 22lr, T3x 223 T3x 6.5cm

for the hell of it: cz american 22lr, 700 classic 6x45 700 cdl 280 Rem
I think I might go 257 Roberts, 7x57 and 9.3x62 with number four always a 30-06. Cause you always gotta have 30-06.
Of course I like to always have a 30-30 around and a 22 rimfire.
I can see this already getting complicated. I think I'll just keep buying more.
