Thinking about a 700 VLS in 22-250. I know they had some QC issues a few years back (aside from the usual reports of safety issues, triggers breaking and bolt handles falling off).

I have some fairly new Remington rifles, fit finish are great, all shoot very well.
Friend bought a 700 in 6.5CM a few months back. Shoots bugholes.

my newer ones scratch up brass pretty badly. accuracy is outstanding.
I had a new CDL 30-06 which was built beautifully. The oldest and only one I own is a 257 Bee built in 2008.

You guys are lucky, last two Remington Stainless SPS 's and a more recent 870 Wingmaster were all junk. The rifles were about 3" rifles at best sold one and rebarreled the other, using the take off barrel as a jack handle. Customer service was the worst. Look at something else, save yourself some money and heart break. NO MORE REMINGTONS AT MY HOUSE EVER!!!!! Look up my previous posts for a long post on the subject.
Two things fugged Remington

Making a deal with the devil(Walmart)

Being bought by a whore of a holding company (cerberus)
Two buddies bought identical Model 700 AWR's both in .300 Win early last Fall .....Fit, finish and function on their rifles are excellent and they both easily shoot MOA with factory ammo, BUT they are some heavy bastids, way too heavy for My taste.....Hb

I think this is the main reason for the QC issues we read about....Hb

Mine does too. Just thought I’d try it out since I hadn’t been bringing any 700’s home of late.

I have a 270 ADL 700 that was made in 2015 and a 308 Model 7 SS that I believe was around 2012. No problems whatsoever with the 308. The 270 shoots well but last December I pulled it out of its case for a morning hunt and it wouldn’t chamber the round (luckily I also had my trusty 30-30 in the truck). Something was wrong with the extractor. Once I got the part ordered it was a quick fix, not sure if that was a fault of the gun or from a season of hard use. Neither are as smooth as my 1980 30-06 model 700 though.
They rust. All my newer Remington products rust quicker than any other guns I have.
Sounds like the issues I read about a few years back have been solved. Hey, I once bought a Win70 and the action was machined incorrectly- one mount was at 12 noon and the other at 12:30. Had to get replaced and how that made it past QC is mind boggling.

I'll move on the 700 soon as I get my WI driver's license and signing bonus. Thanks gents. That scope in my parts box won't be lonely for long.

By chance is that the awful matte blueing? I have had issues with Weatherby and Ruger stainless steel rusting if not wiped down within a day or two. My best luck has been with high gloss blueing as a matter of fact. The oil in my skin tends to rust everything rather quickly is not oiled.

Are these the SPS or ADL versions? Darrick, did you have to do anything to it to make it shoot? Been thinking about one to play with.
Mine is the ADL blued version. Mounted a scope (took the package rings and scope off) and started shooting. No issues yet. I’m pretty pleased so far. It’ll eventually go in another stock and BDL at the very least.
Always liked Remington and still do. I like the 700, the 7, 660, 870 and 1100, and many other models they have made.
And I'd pick a 700 ADL over a RAR, Axis, or any other cheap rifle, especially in stainless. They just have more of a look and feel of a rifle built to last in my opinion. The way I want a rifle to look and feel. Just wish they had a 700 ADL stainless .223 with an 8 or 9 twist and a 22" barrel right out of the box.

One is matte. And that one rusts first.

Several years ago, Walmart had their Model 700 ADL's on sale on Black Friday. With a Remington rebate, the final cost was under $300. I bought 2, both in 243, and one being a Youth Model. Right out of the box, both were excellent shooters, with the 24 inch barrel one being one of my most accurate rifles that I own. The Youth Model has accounted for several deer that my granddaughter has shot.

Friend bought a heavy barrel with big bolt handle. Synthetic/blue. Don't know the exact model variant.

Only thing he did to make it shoot was mount a scope (Vortex) and buy factory ammo.

I've had a long run of bad luck with Remington. The last really good Remington I owned was a 700 SPS in .17 Fireball. Since then, I've had over a dozen 700. Each one either had a real serious accuracy problem or it had a wonky chamber that ate brass. USUALLY it was just burrs left in the chamber but a couple had egg-shaped chambers. One, a .375, spit out brass that could not be resized with normal case lube, I had to switch to Imperial Sizing Wax for case forming just to resize the brass. It was visibly oval when it came out of the chamber.

I like Remington but I can't really recommend one right now. I hope they will turn around their QC problems. I haven't seen any sign of change yet. frown

Since you are in Wisconsin, I'd suggest calling up Redneck and have him do that $50 bolt upgrade on the bolt handle..
and you'll never have to worry about it coming off...I've done that to several of my 700s and even out here, his turn around time was I had them back in less than a week after he received them..

he's located up in Baldwin WI...west of Eau Claire...off I 94.

That's the plan. Probably have him bed it too. Needs done on an old 40-X as well. I spoke with him about doing a custom on a 70 but decided not to move forward with the project. I know he's good people.

As an added note I have several older 700's than I've turned into semi customs with after market stocks and barrels and a pair of box stock 700's from the 1970's with the pressed checkering. One 30 06 and one 243 that I really love and will never let go. Both are silky smooth and are among the more accurate rifles I own. Also have a Classic in 250 Savage fits in with the 243 and 30 06 as far as accuracy and feeling right in the hand. Hope someday Remington is sold to a company that cares about the customers and not only the bottom line. BRING BACK THE OLD REMINGTON QC, AND THE SAFETY THAT LOCKS THE BOLT. Also wish they would ditch that ugly 3" thick, or so it seems, on an otherwise very nice looking CDL ( Putting the soap box away for now!)

NO saftey that locks the bolt, that should be optional. I"d NEVER want my bolt locked.

May I ask why. 3 position is more to my liking, one of the reasons I like Winchesters and to a lesser extent Savages.
The two 700s I bought recently have too much headspace. I have to form a false shoulder on the brass for the first firing.
Posted By: CORDrew Re: Current Remington Quality? - 06/29/18
I just took a gamble on a Remington deal that was too good to pass up.... Stainless Rem 700 adl package in 308. $395 shipped from buds guns. They are actually selling the SS for cheaper than the blued. I hope it is a decent shooter. It'll be a slowly evolving project no matter what. Chop the barrel to 21", trigger, stock replacement etc. At this price, it's about the same as buying a bare action. I haven't owned a Rem rifle in about 5 years. But those I owned in the past were good rifles.

That matte finish is horrible for rusting. You can watch it build on shotguns over the course of a salt marsh duck hunt.

Which cartridges are they chambered for?
Posted By: WAM Re: Current Remington Quality? - 06/29/18
The matte finish on many newer Remington guns have a grainy texture that has tiny peaks and risers that are absolute rust generators. I finally painted my 870 Super Mag to beat down the rust. Conversely, my 1966 M700 has lots of bare spots devoid of bluing and never rusts when wet. All about the poor, cheap finishes on newer Remingtons. Happy Trails
20 years from now, Remington 700s built during this time frame will be reffered to as the ones built during the "good ole days."

People are fickle.

Choices are great.
I used to hate a locked bolt.
After I got one, I hate an unlocked bolt.

3-position should be great, no such center fires here though.
Current model 700s do not lock the bolt when safety is on...haven't for years.
I recently bought one of the cheaper 700 ADL models at Academy in 25-06. Shoots MOA and works great.
Posted By: JSH Re: Current Remington Quality? - 07/01/18
Agree with the rust issues-almost worse than bare steel with their matte bluing. I had one actually rust on the way home from the range on a humid day. I took in a bare action recently and had them Cerakote it Midnight Blue, mainly so it won't rust while I decide what to build.
Fit and finish is spotty on the newer ones I have bought but they have all functioned well and most have shot at least acceptably. A 243 came out of the box shooting really well and with a minimum spec chamber that is working well for brass life.
Rust issues that remington has on their SS rifles is a result of the finish they put on it. The old SS 700's had a beautiful satin finish.

I have an 870 riot gun that just looking at it wrong makes it rust. That's because it has a crap bluing job. I have going to have it plated with metalife.
Posted By: mjbgalt Re: Current Remington Quality? - 07/01/18
Maybe they don't get all the bluing salts out of the Sandy finish? Dunno.

No, no they won't. They've done some poor work here lately, I started noticing that some were problematic during the '80s, even. The rust problems aren't someone's pipe dreams, either. I'm done with them. I'm not the only one, either.
