I had 300 pcs. of Federal brass a few years ago that had 33 pcs. with split necks out of 100. The rest were just badly dented. Federal received them and I got a check from their Anoka, MN. office. Anything can happen.

About 10 years ago a former coworker sent out some sub par workmanship to a customer. He happened to be out sick the day the customer came calling to "discuss" the quality of the work. I got a dressing down the likes of which I hadn't been on the receiving end of since my days in the Marines. I sat there and took it even though I wasn't responsible because the customer was correct, the workmanship was abysmal. This letter brought a smile to my face.

I bet it said 'For Sale in AR Only' but someone fugged up and thought AK was short for Arkansas so they shipped it. Arkansas residents wouldn't have noticed a problem.

I use Alpha brass as well, but due to lack of availability at a point in time I have grabbed a few hundred Starline LRP cases. I am very impressed actually. Dimensionally excellent and very robust with a case capacity almost bang on with Lapua.

Long ago, I did telephone technical support for ** computers, and learned a great way to deal with folks like you.

Back then ** did not have a toll free number for tech support, so the call sometimes went downhill very quickly when the caller started ranting at me about how long they had been on hold and why ** didn't have a toll free number. If the caller was nice to me, and or I felt they were wronged, I had the ability to send them free things such as printer cartridges and so forth, if they were particularly nasty, they would hear something like this....hello, hello, are you still there?...hello, hello, can you hear me? Then, I'd hang up, and they could start all over again in telephone queue hell.

In over thirty five years of reloading I've never not had a company make something right. Attitude is everything.

I think this was a huge blunder on their part. Huge. I will never order any of their product. All manufacturers have QC issues from time to time. When a customer brings those issues to your attention, no matter how snarky the tone, you do NOT take them to task for their attitude. The first thing you do is you ship them the match grade product they paid for. Then you take ownership of your poor QC, you don't make excuses for it. You thank the customer for giving you an opportunity to grow. I don't even understand how there was a question of whether or not they should respond to his email. Hell yes you respond. You screwed up, and you owe the customer an apology and the product they paid for.

Norma is the most over hyped and wayyyyyyyyyyyy over rated brass on the fhuqking Planet and that from inception. Their H&H based wares(whether full length or shortened versions of the ilk),are reliably the worst and Norma likes them softer than anyone else. They like to place belts in random locations too and when coupled in a case design as mechanically schitty as a 300 H&H,things can get sporty. It's a nice way to arrange a head separation.

If forced to use Norma in said application,or resort to throwing rocks...I'd at a minimum,bump neck diameter and drive a false shoulder for finite headspace control,upon the first poke,which just happens to be the most important. Hint.

Never been tough to cypher who shoots and who don't.

I'm Derek Peterson from Peterson Cartridge. As you can see from the above thread, Larry seems a little irate with us right now. After reading through the entire thread, that seems about on par for him as a bunch of people have commented. My hope was that he would either become reasonable so we can help him, or he would drop the issue. He did neither, so now I have to come on here and defend us. Either way, since he is going to post this email, I am about to send him, to this thread anyway, I figured I would just help him out and save him the trouble.

Good afternoon. I’m the President of Peterson Cartridge. I want to thank you for purchasing casings from us. It is unfortunate how unhappy you have been with our “Quality” issues relating to the slight out of center flash holes. In the pictures you attached to the 1st email, the further the camera lens gets away from the primer pocket being photographed, the more out of center it appears. (Notice the Alpha casing on the far right appearing to be out of center to the left) As for the slight ring to one side or the other of the flash hole, this is what is making the flash hole appear ratty, that is caused by the media in our tumbling process contacting the edges of the flash hole and polishing the bottom of the primer pocket. As a result, the media causes the edge of the flash hole to lose some of its “crispness” when it is photographed. Look how polished our brass is compared to Alpha. Not excuses, just trying to give you some facts for your next rant.

Attached are two photos of the same casing with our polished primer pocket and with the primer pocket dulled by breathing on it. See how crisp the flash hole looks when the primer pocket is dulled?

Although it isn’t important now, if you would have been reasonable, I would have liked to know just how out of center the flash holes were to the edge of the primer pocket. Measured in .001”, of course. Again, if you would have been reasonable, we would have exchanged the brass for new brass without any questions. We offered that, but you so eloquently declined. (I have access to a dictionary too, do I sound smart yet?)
As Ben has stated many times to you, we are constantly improving our tooling to produce product with ever increasing quality, fit, and function. I have taken the time, although now realize it to be wasted, and read through your profanity laced emails. After reading through all of that nonsense, I have learned only three things about you; 1. You are a decent troll. 2. You have access to a dictionary and/or a thesaurus. 3. For whatever reason, you appear to have a chip on your shoulder against us and are unreasonable.
It is our policy to discontinue trying to help anyone who demonstrates themselves as unreasonable. I have instructed Ben to not respond to any further emails from you, so unfortunate as it is for both of us, you won’t be getting any more responses from him nor I via email. Also, as much as I would like to dive into a shouting match with you on what makes quality brass casings, I have neither the time nor the interest in doing that. Who knows, maybe I will take some of your scholarly advise and go “work” on our tooling designs. Either way, we sure do appreciate all of the feedback you have given us over the past few days. We haven't released it yet. We did a small run of it last year, but the belt feature didn't look just right so we have been working on the new tooling since then.

I've got some Peterson 6 Creed brass coming….

Build it right and they will come! It’s damn tough to find great belted brass, and apparently when you do you never know when the manufacturer will farm out the production to Norma.

I don’t know that RWS did that for sure but my last lot of RWS stamped brass is a dead ringer for Norma .. I know lapua has done that before with 300 win..

I am a pretty casual reloader. I don't know what the industry standard for creating flash holes is. If the hole is uniform, centered and smooth (which Larry's was not) does it matter? That's meant to be a question for my education, not to challenge anyone. Can match grade brass be created by punching rather than cutting, drilling or otherwise creating the hole?

Would those erratic flash holes directly effect accuracy by changing your point of impact, as in possible changes of hitting left or right of your target? Or is it more of a cause of variations in FPS per load thereby changing poi vertically?

As for the explanation I gave, how would you go about reasoning and trying to explain a topic to someone who everytime you mention something he goes on a 3 page rant. Sure. We use a punch and backing die combination. The punch is a hardened piece of carbide the diameter the flash hole needs to be. For large rifle, .080". For our small rifle, .060". The backing stem, which is also carbide to hold its' edge, is inserted into the mouth of the casing and contacts the inside of the bottom of the casing. The casing is then driven, by the backing stem, onto an alignment guide which contains the carbide punch. The way we have improved the punching operation since Larry received his casings, is by designing a more accurate guide bushing, that the casing is pushed on to, so the flash hole is more centered in the primer pocket. Before the new upgrade, from time to time you could get a casing with a flash hole out of center by about .000" - .015". Since the improvement we are now about .000 - .004"

If I'm reading this right the backing stem would have a hole in the middle to accommodate the punched out brass bit and the tip of the punch as it comes through. The improvement of the guide bushing allowing for better control of the hole location would then allow for a smaller diameter hole in the backing stem. This in turn would lead to a cleaner edged hole and less dishing of the bottom of the primer side of the primer pocket.

Am I on track here?

I figured Larry had logged off, so cooler heads might prevail if I tried to answer any remaining questions. This whole thing has just been really strange. We have sold millions of casings over the past 3 years, and never had a complaint like Larry's. We have tens of thousands of customers, many setting world records and winning matches with our products. Pretty much everyone who shoots a Cheytac in the USA or the world shoots our brass because of our quality. Hell, Derek Rogers won king of 2 mile with our brass just last year. (He got beat this year by a 416 Barrett). We've never seen any complaints with pictures like the ones Larry took. That is one of the main reasons I wanted to replace his brass, besides it being the right thing to do. Just to get a closer look at them with my own eyes. But either way, I don't want to fight a battle I can't win.

I appreciate that explanation. I guess in a round about way I am glad I found this thread to get to talk to some people I normally don't. One thing I wanted to put out there is that we have a full metallurgical lab and internal ballistics lab here at our shop. If you want to watch the video, you can see it there. If you, or anyone, has a question about your particular load, or the casings you use, just PM me and I can probably help you out. Like if you are dropping primers or something, if you email me your load data, casing, powder, bullet, primer, etc. . . If I can get time in the lab, I normally have to fight our ballistician for time, I can probably help you out. I could check the velocity and what internal pressure you are at inside the casing. I could also check to see if the heads of the casings are soft. We measure internal pressures, velocities, hardness, grain structure, and all kind of stuff. Just wanted to throw that out there.

I appreciate you forwarding this thread on to us. I have been watching this since it began. I'm surprised to hear you say that we didn't own up to our mistake. From the 1st email we received from Larry we have admitted our fault. We gave a reason for the error of the casings being from our 1st run of that caliber. That was a mistake to say. Agreed. However, we have been trying to get Larry to ship us back the product for replacement from the beginning. As an employer, it is part of my job to try and protect my employees from being harassed. That was the case with Larry, and that is why we tried to talk to him like a regular human, unlike he was doing to us. If you read through his emails, he wanted nothing to do with being made whole for some reason. We still don't understand why. Its pretty simple for us, we pay for return shipping to us, and we send out replacement product. We pay for everything, super simple.
As for you never buying product from us, well, I'm disappointed to hear you say that. It seems pretty unfair to take one outlying event and form an opinion about our company and the products we offer. We are continually striving to improve our product, and as far as out of center flash holes go, we have already made the correction. As for the appearance of the flash holes in his pictures, I don't have a reason for that. I have never seen anything like that leave our facility. Please search around the internet for any other examples of flash holes like the ones Larry received. I have searched extensively, and haven't been able to find anything. If you ever change your mind about us or our products, we of course would be happy to ship product your way. In fact, I've got the box I needed to send to Larry sitting here, if you send me your address unlike he will, I'll ship you a box of 308/260/6.5 Creedmoor for free. If Larry won't take his replacement box, then I should give it to someone else. Please form your own opinions about us after seeing and shooting the product. With regard to gaping flash holes, Larry’s original correspondence should have been received as a badge of honor. He’s fiercely loyal. If you’re one of his preferred products/producers, e.g. Barrett FC, SWFA SS, Alpha Brass, Burris Extreme Tactical Sig Rings, HH, XTRATUF, etc., he’ll boisterously tout your wares far and wide. I can’t imagine how many Super Sniper scopes and Kimber Montana’s he’s sold. If you make a product that competes with one of his darlings, he’ll measure you by that existing standard. Larry’s preferences aren’t stagnant. When convinced he’s been presented with a superior product, he will abandon gear that he’s vocally championed, i.e. Talley LW rings, the Kimber Montana, Leupold, etc., etc.....

Larry’s communication style is, as JS put it, his hook. It prioritizes authenticity, function, accuracy, and diligence over courtesy, convention, and fluff. It’s absolutely dependent on conflict and striving. Whatever his faults, he’s determined and intelligent.

I think most will agree, including Larry himself, that, if nothing else, he’s an unwavering and spirited master internet troll. His infamy encases a tempered soul like that of a teen starlet’s—forged in the pedophilic fires of Hollywood. You don’t want to roll in the mud with Larry and there’s really no need when Fred and Jud have already jumped on that grenade.

Not for nothing but, in this instance, an appropriate CS strategy might be to send frequent samplings of only your most defective and anomalous casings. Then sit back and wait for a response. I guarantee the value of those responses will more than outweigh a few handfuls of brass scrap and the price of postage.

Finally, you’d do well to reconsider how you’ve estimated your audience, particularly the audience you’ve not considered.

Ha...that is as apt a description as any I have seen.

To be honest I do not recall ever getting any cases with wonky flash holes...and for the past twenty-odd years I have been mostly using Lapua and cutting the pockets and flash holes anyway, mainly for cleaning and to use a standard decapping pin.


And the best one to answer this question would most likely be Stick, as I do not know of anyone else that gins around with stuff like he does.

Correct. But, there is a ratio you need to follow during the punching operation. If you close the gap between the punch and the backing die too close, you will actually create a burr on the inside of the casing. If you take a look at Lapua casings, they tend to run the punch a little too close to the backing stem, as a lot of their casings have a slight burr on the inside. However, their flash holes appear from the outside to be very crisp. Not saying anything bad about Lapua or how they make their casings, it is just an observation I have made. When you punch any metal, there is a shear zone and a tear zone. When the punch first contact the metal, the punch cuts into the metal sharply. As the punch continues through the metal, pressure builds up. When the pressure the punch is creating by pushing and cutting the metal overcomes the strength of the remaining metal, the metal tears out. This tear out is what prevents a burr on the inside of the casing. Here is a link to a better explanation with pictures. Punching Diagram

Got it. I didn't realize I forgot about his post. Ya. I'm the one who created the website. I agree with everything it says about flash hole concentricity and crispness. That is why if someone finds an issue with any of the casings we produce, we are happy to replace them free of charge whether it is a flash hole, overall length, or any other dimension. To get into the nitty gritty of flash hole centered-ness. I haven't seen any studies on the effect of an out of center flash hole affecting accuracy. I'm not saying it can't, but I haven't seen any study. I don't want to give bad advice. I know that a partial flash hole, one where the punch was split in half, wouldn't provide proper ignition of the powder inside the casing. It is the same thought as having a big burr on the inside of the casing. If the flame from the primer doesn't reach the powder uniformly, you, in theory, could have a less than ideal powder burn. That would result in a drop in velocity of the bullet. That would, if you were shooting far enough out, cause you to hit low on your target. A flash hole slightly out of center, I'm not sure exactly what effect that would have on the powder burn. What we are talking about on the website is trying to eliminate as many variables as possible. Internal volume, flash hole centered-ness, primer pocket depth and tightness, etc...
A few weeks ago I was shooting out at 1,000 yards. At that distance, the spin put on the bullet by the rifling in the barrel causes the bullet to drift to the right about 5 inches. That is if nothing else effects it like something to do with the bullet, powder, primer, or casing.

I don't have any good news on that front. We have 4 new calibers coming out in the next 90 days, and none of them are the 28 Nosler. I think we will be tackling that one early in 2019. It is based off of the RUM family, and we don't make that family yet. But we are coming out with a new ELR cartridge, in conjunction with another company, and it should hit the market in a few months. It is really impressive.

I think Nosler is dragging their feet because they can’t produce a 28 Nosler in house that doesn’t have a magazine box length limited to 3.425”...

I have designed our new tooling for the WSM family, and even made some sample parts, but it is also going to be coming out in early 2019. That is the same for the 28 Nosler when we come out with it.

Ouch, hopefully they take care you of to your satisfaction. I have 3-4 buddies with nosler rifles and all have been very accurate thus far.

Well, the popcorn is running out again and I'm just starting to realize this could be one of those threads that goes on for chapters like a cheap novel.
A couple things I've learned over the years on this forum- in spite of the 8 or so years I took off due to ass-ole saturation of the site...

If I was a manufacturer in anything gunny related, Larry would be my test mule no doubt. As said above, if it can survive his test criteria it can survive anything. We've all seen the videos with him throwing his rifles with scopes mounted in rivers, across gravel bars, and generally any place but where most of us more dainty hunters wouldn't.
He shoots more in a couple weeks than any ten of us in a lifetime and reports his results in finite detail and the reasons why- "being led to water" is his most accurate line. He also isn't afraid to change up his wares if something better comes along and he will say so along the way. Leupolds are a good example. When only a few manufacturers of scopes were in the league of Leupold, that was a wise choice. As more choices came along, Larry started to experiment with everything, not just the higher end stuff, but the affordable stuff also. He has tested Nightforce, Bushnell, and just about anything else you can imagine and related back what worked and why. All you have to do is read and learn because even if you didn't care for his delivery, the content is always accurate. On top of it all, he does all this on his own dime as far as I can tell. In his neck of the woods, I doubt anyone has been a better salesman for their preferred brands of rifles, scopes, bullets, brass, etc.... just about anything gunny.

As far as Larry's ascerbic personality- well, that is just Larry. I kind of accept that you take it or leave it. Getting worked up by it is a total waste of time. Being entertained by his style and the trolling and responses is great fun at times for some of us.

If I was Peterson Brass, I would quietly in the background make sure Larry got whatever brass he needed and have him return the brass that is defective so they can improve on it. Have Larry report back on the new brass and future brass to help them with their apparent QC problem in the future and to keep them at the top of their game. Any manufacturer that doesn't see deserved criticism as an opportunity for improvement is missing the boat. IMO. Getting your feelings hurt really isn't going to get you anywhere except angry, which is a bad place to be when you have a public audience to sell to. Humble sells more product IMO.

I am sorry, time has gotten away from me today! My gunsmith took a look over the rifle and didn’t find anything visually wrong. He did mentioned that the trigger had been adjusted to a lighter pull weight and was not properly set. The rifle has been cleaned and sent down to our ballistics lab to be tested for accuracy. This will give us a good indication about what is going on and we will have a baseline to begin our diagnosis. I will let you know when I am provided the results from our lab.

Am I the only one who sees the irony in this thread. From what I have been able to understand, the vaunted stick has changed a lot of his thinking over the years. Heck...I read an archived thread on here 1 time where Larry even believed the 25/06 Rem to be the cat's meow. He now believes it to be a piece of excrement. He might never admit it, but according to what he once believed and "hinted" at and placed at the water trough so he could lead people to it, he now believes he was wrong. Why? There is a learning curve in life on just about everything we do...even with stick.

Peterson hasn't been in business for that long compared to others in the business (at least from what I understand). Maybe there is a learning curve in there somewhere. All of stick's disciples seem to overlook all the mistakes he made earlier in his life when it comes to things like which scopes work and don't work, what cartridges shoot which bullets better than others, etc. I have seen threads on here of those who like/don't like Lapua, Norma, certainly Remington and Winchester brass; but I haven't seen any of those who have gotten bad batches of brass from these manufacturers spew venom like they have on this brass. Heck, there has even been Nosler rifles and others talked about being sent back because it doesn't come up to the standards of what the company claims. And yet, there is no forum wide call to arms against those other manufacturers.

I have no experience with Peterson brass, but if they ever make any in a caliber I need it for, I would try it. If we're going to crucify a company because of what we have read and the pictures we have seen on this thread then let's not be hypocritical about stuff. Let's crucify every manufacturer we read about that has put out a bad product on here. Problem is, pretty soon we wouldn't be able to buy anything from any manufacturer because they have all let things fall through the cracks at one time or another.

Trigger improperly set.....Are you fuucking serious? They come owner adjustable. Yes, it wasn’t set to your, out the door 7-8lbs pull. I bet it shot like a demon at its original trigger setting. That extra “heave-ho” required on the start button always brings bullets into the center.

Hey you bunch of flash holes. Sorry I went dark on here for the last few days. I wanted to say thanks to everyone who has sent private messages encouraging me to ignore Larry and take it all with a grain of salt. I talked with our shipping department today, and the few people I have talked to who are going to get some samples from us to do a review on, those samples will be shipping out tomorrow. Then it's just a waiting game until the samples arrive and the guys have some time to inspect and test them. Either way, I will keep you all posted. Looking forward to getting some feedback from the evaluators.

Not sure what to think about this thread.. Sure has gone sideways. I have never used Peterson brass, but have used most of the others. Had an issue with a well know maker, not one of the big ones, but a good supplier of the harder to find ones. The issue I had was with an easy to find one, 38 Special. Good price, good reputation. Well had 15 split cases out of 50 on the first reload. I was not as snarkie as Larry.. The response I got was not to me acceptable. My load was 2.7g Bullseye with a 148g HBWC, a classic bullseye load that has been around for decades. The explanation for the split cases was detonation due to the small powder load. ?? They replaced the cases, with a few more no issues. Hardness, etc?? I don't know. Other brass is fine with this load, even up to 20 reloads and still going. The cases were segregated and used with other loads and they were fine. I would always give a vendor a chance to see what they would do, they responded. Things happen, will they make it right? The pictures did not look very good, but I do enough to know I can with a camera make things look bad. Social Media I guess LOL wishing for the good old times. I would not exempt Pederson brass on Larry's recommendation.. However I might look at it a bit closer.. Getting into a shouting match with Larry on the internet is a losing proposition.

Oh, yeah, it's back. I was in Vegas just a couple of weeks ago. I'm diggin' it.

Just my 2 cents. Awhile back, when we 1st started making big magnum casings, (338 Lapua Family) we had a customer call in and say that they had an issue with a few of the casings out of the box splitting when he tried to fire form them into AI. When we traced back the issue, it turned out that we needed to anneal further down the casing body during our tapering operation. When we did our next run of them, we changed our anneal gradient in the body of the casing to make it a little softer further down. Damned if that didn’t fix the issue. Never had a complaint about that after we made the change. We don’t make pistol casings, but I bet it would be the same solution. With rifle, we had to be very careful not to anneal too far down though, or the casings would be too soft in the head and lower body to have good reloadability. I bet, if you were so inclined to do so, you could have run those casings through a flame annealer, just kissed the tops of them with the flame, and maybe have been able to solve the problem. Sending them back is usually the fastest way to solve the issue though, since they shouldn’t have cracked from the beginning. Again, just my experience.

I appreciate the response. Funny my son's name is spelled the same way. As a consumer, I would not want to have to anneal a new pistol case. I would expect it to work with a very well know load. The pistol was a S&W 52 which now is getting rather expensive. No damage but I would not want to subject it to split cases an a regular basis. It seems every manufacturer has issues from time to time. A QC issue I would guess, a changed process, new raw material etc. To me it is the response to a problem that makes a difference. Most often right or wrong the "customer" is right even If they are not. The cases actually split in the center, The top and bottom was fine.

That makes perfect sense about not wanting to re-anneal. Ours did the same thing too. Split in the center. The crack started just below the shoulder and continued down the body about half way. The mouth was fine and the lower body was fine. We could never figure out exactly where it originated from. The shoulder, or the center of the body. It happens in the chamber, so we just got to see the aftermath on the casing. Kind of weird, but the hardness was our culprit. I believe pistol casings are batch annealed after they are finished being drawn to help relieve the stress put into the brass during the drawing process. I’m not sure of that though. For us in rifle, we anneal the body before tapering and then the mouth and shoulder region one last time as a final step to make sure all of the stress is out of the mouth and shoulder to make sure the casing doesn’t crack over time and to make sure the bullet has correct tension and release.

I think rather highly of '17 in all of my 243AI's,whether with 105's,8's or 10's. Tough to beat the rugged reliability of the venerable Hornie 105 HPBT and what one may trade in BC to other offerings of the ilk,stalwart performance is returned in kind,though in non-lineal fashion(them is good thangs). They also happen to happily transition from mag,feedramp and chamber in Krunchentickers,less a BC hit to the meplat. Polymer offerings,don't always share that trait,in either '15 or 10 Krunchentickers(243 LBC or 243Win SALAMI),as I've multiples of each,amongst others.




The 243AI is a nice way to fly,but if only because I shoot it all and then some,I'd just as soon 243 Kreedmire. The COAL latitude never hurts an equation and I'm at ease in letting boolits of repute,in brass of repute(Peterson is WELL shy of that mark),do the work ala LRF and glass that tracks/repeats. Just hit a Grizzle Bear at 1985yds outta my office window,with a Sig 2200 MR. Very easy to arrange said comeups along The Milford,from a sane zero(225yds),with a "lowly" 6x MQ. As a rule,I tend to coax copious erector latitude and am a fan of mount/ring inclination,very often throwing 75MOA into the equation. It's nice to yield 37++ Mils from zero and then of course,there's always 10 more laying in wait,upon the windshield.

As 6mm bore sizing goes,I shoot a few flavors. My gunsmith just sent me an update regarding your M48 Long Range 28 Nosler. After cleaning the barrel and re-setting the trigger to 3 lbs, he sent it to the lab to be tested. Our ballistics lab found results similar to what you were experiencing with our 160gr AccuBond load. They also tried our match bullets just to see what they would do and actually produced a very good group. My gunsmith is checking out everything on the barrel currently and is determining the next step for this rifle. I will let you know when he provides me more information regarding the next step.

Has anyone noticed (I am not going to go back through so many pages to look) that the manager automatically knew Big Stick's name? The manager addressed Larry by name in the response email from Peterson Brass, but I didn't see anywhere where Larry had addressed or identified himself in the original or even subsequent email....maybe it was one of those auto forms where you fill out your info then type into the body of the message then it sends it out?

If not, then the manager knew who the sender was simply by how the email was composed...
