Yeah, know what you mean.

Wish I needed it. Those are sleepers and it does look like it's in near mint condition

Usually with a gun like that, the bore is generally in about the same shape as the gun.

And those old Micro Trac scopes are pretty good, probably worth $90-100 by itself.

Sweet deer rifle.

Do they still make the Micro Trac? Is this a vintage Weaver USA or later imported scope?

This Ebay scope is USA Weaver, not sure about the Collectors scope, the power rings look different. www.ebay.com/itm/283051628179

Looks like a good buy and Collector’s prices usually range from high to dreaming.

I need another 308 like.....

So, not coming here.

Yeah, their prices can be pretty high.

BUT, sometimes you can find a sleeper.

I've made several trades with them over the years. This was the best. They had this old Superposed listed for around $1,100 or so, IIRC. I just liked the looks of it, traded a Citori Sporting Clays, even swap.

When I later let them know the provenance, they were shocked. Here's the shotgunworld link with nearly 90K posts. www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=124719

So, you never know, can't write them off.

This Win PF M-70 with scope isn't a bad deal. I'm trying to find out more about the scope.

Collector’s is about 20 miles away.

I have one in 223 and it is a nice rifle

It's priced where it should be. Not a deal but not a rip off either. Sweet rifle.

Depends on the scope, what it's worth.

Agree with the price being in line with reality.

This rendition of the M-70 PF is way better than the early post-64 offerings which were pretty sorry.

These XTR's have much nicer finish, machine cut checkering, not that ugly pressed stuff, better stock shape and finish.

Agree on re-bedding, which I would also do.

I didn’t read all thirty six pages, but wow what a score on Col. Askins’ Superposed!

Yeah, it sorta went off the reservation a few times, but was an interesting project. Met some really great people, lots of expertise there, as there is here.

I thought at first it was Col. Askins' gun. Only later did I find out it was his Dad's gun, the Major.

I hooked up with the Colonel's son, Bill, in San Antonio. He provided a lot of family info not otherwise published.

Bill had his own distinguished military career and is a stand up guy.

Collector’s is about 20 miles away.

That would be too close for me, glad I'm 3 hrs. away... grin

If you check it out, let us know what they say about the Micro Trac scope. I'm curious.

Those are good scopes regarding tracking, seems Weaver went to some effort to make that a solid feature.

Maybe Leupold can follow suit... blush

Glass on older scopes is generally not as good as current scopes, even Chinese.

So, the more the scope is worth, the cheaper the gun.

Looks that way. Site is as of 2018. Thought they were but just wanted to make sure.

The Micro Trac on the XTR looks more vintage El Paso to me, just not sure.

If it's a newer scope, then it's worth more than I estimated. If that's the case, this rifle suddenly got pretty cheap.

That's why a careful consideration of the scope is important.

Only variable El Paso Weaver I had was a V7. The ocular and power adjustment both turned together. Here's a link to a 1.5-4.5x20 El Paso. It's made the same way. If the El Paso's were changed to look like the one on that XTR later on I don't know.

That looks like the one on the Ebay link I posted.

So, I'm not sure what's on the XTR. That's the $64 question.

Got one of those in a 6.5 x 55 Swede and it is a great shooter............. think I'll pass on the 308. MB

I bought one of the early, ugly ones from a good bud back in the late '60's. IIRC, paid him $90. I chunked the ugly factory stock, put it in a Royal semi-inletted stock, glassed, free floated, finished and even checkered it. It's a 7RM, shot an easy MOA with most loads/ammo. My son has it and it has put venison in the freezer.

Those guns generally shoot very well.

Pretty sure only the El Paso Weavers had the Micro Tract. Can pick them up for 70-100 dollars but, I like them.
Posted By: Dirtfarmer Re: M-70 XTR push feed .308 - 08/18/18
This scope has a different power ring than the Micro Trac I posted with the EBay link and the one Earl posted.

Was this version a later model, earlier model? I assume both versions are El Paso.

I'm betting it's a Weaver Steel-Lite II. Made in El Paso but marked USA. As far as a DOM I found this:
" From 1974 till the end of the company, in 1983, they were all marked as -1s and, later, -II (Steel-Lites on the box....)"

Here's one it's a wide view model but other than that looks like the one your inquiring about:

What you think?

It looks like someone bit on a decent deal. It has a Sale Pending notice at the link.
Posted By: Dirtfarmer Re: M-70 XTR push feed .308 - 08/18/18
EZEARL, now aren't you the detective... cool

I think you nailed it. It's a V 4.5 II, 1.5-4.5x20, evidently a later version. The guy in your link was asking $150 for a widefield version, so these may be worth a tad more than the older ones (like you had), eyepiece turning with the power ring. To me, this is an improvement.

If this scope is in the $150 range, that cuts the gun cost to $450, an even better deal.

Thanks, Earl. I didn't know about that series of Weaver scopes.

Forgot about a 3-9x40 I got in a swap years back that had Micro-Trac on the side and had the same ocular/power ring set up as that V4.5. Never used it and didn't have it but for a few months. Gave it to a friend in need and he's still using it. That got me to searching and I came across the info I posted. Beings that's a low power variable I'd think $150 would be doable. Looks to be in nice shape.

That gun gets cheaper, the more we find out about that scope.

IME, those big dealers, like Cabelas and Collectors, don’t spend much time figuring the scopes. In an obvious case like a Swaro, etc., they may figure it out. More obscure scopes, not so much. I made a trade with Cabelas for a T - Bolt .22 mag that had a VX-3 scope with Aluma covers, the covers worth nearly a hundred bucks. They didn’t seem too concerned. Got those fancy scope covers gratis.

Details can make a difference.
