I’m a 35 Newton guy, but pretty much the same darned thing.

Ruger M 77 re-barreled to .358 Norma.

Custom 98 Mauser I bought off JCMCUBIC, beautiful rifle, I ironically enough worked up a load with four ancient lbs of Norma 204 powder I've had for 15 years, 250 gr Partitions run 2809 fps and will shoot bugholes when I'm paying attention, it was built by a man named Longfellow, that name and 358 Norma Magnum is the only writing on the rifle, he built an hell of an accurate rifle with a three position Winchester M-70 type trigger and a 2lb Jaeger trigger that breaks like glass.

Wish I could have met him.

"generally" I'm not prejudiced against most rifles OR cartridges and I'm NOT here either.

I had a 35 Whelen and liked it - however - it was MORE gun than I needed for WT. I really wish I had it back - because - I had it made before Remington adopted the round. I don't need another one.


I recognize there's a place & game for the 358 N M, but UNfortunately I will not be able to hunt WHAT or WHERE it may be needed.
I do appreciate the round.


ATST - I really want to PLAY with a 416 RM -- play being the operative word.

I shot one for a number of years, 250gr RN's for deer, but it killed a lot more squirrels. I experimented with 148gr DEWC's over a mild load of 700x and it would shoot clover leafs at 50 yards and started carrying it for squirrels in prep for deer season, it became one of my favorite squirrel rifles. Someone offered an insane amount of money for it and it went down the road. It was overboard for deer and I never got draw for a moose tag. I replaced it with a Rem 721 rebored to 35 Whelen dropped into a synthetic 700 Stock.

Mine will likely never be used on anything bigger than deer. I like to think a moose might be in my future, but it seems less likely every year. In the meantime, it kills deer rather cleanly and I have no qualms about hunting deer with the boomers. Hell, I shot a doe with a .404 Jeffery a few years ago and will do it again. Just for good measure, I added a .358 STA to the stable a couple years ago to keep the Norma Mag company, and it probably won't ever hunt any big beasties either. I just have a weakness for .35s, big or small...

I can understand that. I hunt & kill WT with my 7 RM, 300 WM AND 8 mm RM.
The Big 8 CERTAINLY isn’t needed for deer, at least WT. I got it from a friend who is the First owner.
He is handicapped being blind in 1 eye.

I don’t know ANYONE personally who owns one and they’re out of production except from the Rem custom shop or
a Custom gun maker. It shoots, it is a 700 . >> I don’t use it often but I’ve SELDOM seen 1 for sale.
I don’t have MUCH competition for components. lol

I can say I have a rifle that NOT many people have.

Need has nothing to do with it. I have a .460 and "need" was never in question. I will use it on whatever I want to use it on. If someone says that is to big for such and such animal,they can go pound sand! To buy a rifle and not use is a crying shame,they are made to use no matter the caliber.

I have an 8 Magnum too and yes, it absolutely stones deer!

I hear ya Elks. I have rifle S that I don't need......don't tell my wife, and I hunt them occasionally because I want to. I have 'other' toys, motorcycles etc. that I don't need but I use them because they're fun .

Right now it's a matter of too many toys and less $$$$$. I just can't justify it, even to myself.

This is the 2nd copy I have. I wore out the first one. That magazine was the FIRST Shooting Times I ever saw or bought. I became a fan of JRS rather quickly.

The second reason I have my 8 is a Friend bought it new and being handicapped with 1 eye, later decided to sell it so I got it right.
I actually shot it MORE than he did, when he had it, during testing, grouping, & graphing.

I had one a few years ago. I liked it a lot but don't get to hunt moose all that much, so ........

I have one, and sold another.
My current one is a LH stainless model 70 action, douglas 22" barrel and sitting in a McMillan supergrade stock.
Both have been super accurate with 250gr Nosler or Hornady bullets over max charges of IMR4350.
I've shot moose, caribou and a interior grizzly with them and all were greatly impressed.

Sometimes you just gotta have it. I have a lot I don’t need. I have 5 seven mags, don’t need more than one.

My 358 Norma... kind of different and I like it!!!

Schultz and Larsen (Danish) 65DL, re-barreled (Hart) 358 Norma Mag, hard chrome finish, MPI fiberglass stock. Shoots about the same as the others in this thread except w/ IMR4350 and 250 grain Speers.

Supercub, that's my exact load also.

I should have kept that rifle, but the moose hunting is rare here on a draw and we don't have the scary bears we read about on the interweb. I am well served with a 308, 280 or 30-06 if I do get another tag.

I've been out your way a couple times to the Yukon. Took a 375 but that 358 would have been perfect as well.

If anyone has one in a BRNO rifle, I know a buyer.
