So I am thinking about upgrading the bottom metal on a Model 70 from 2piece to 1piece.
PT&G seems to be the best deal and the switch to Al will save a little weight.
What are the advantages of the Oberndorf bottom metal versus the standard?

I am interested in the answers you receive. Since you question is specific to an M70, you may get more answers if you post in the Winchester Collectors forum.

I had one in my M70 and liked it. I never thought much about whether the latch was any “better” but one piece is sure as hell a lot easier to bed than 2 piece.

I believe the latch design is less prone to releasing under heavy recoil.

Don't like aluminum if I have a choice, and the Oberndorf looks best on a heavy rifle, and maybe a drop-mag, but those are personal preferences. Never had an issue with an M70 dropping open, except a SS Classic belonging to my son, which he fixed with a file.

The lines of the M70 are near-perfect to me, as-is, though the actions aren't.

PT&G certainly has some options to choose from. But in my one attempted purchase, I swore I'd never try to buy from them again. Mis-statements and delivery date missed by 3+ weeks. Finally got 100% of my money back from VISA as I supplied copies of the emails documenting what I'd been guranteed.

I had a aluminum PTG obendorf on a Remington clone build and would not use them again. It was pretty rough and the springs needed to be changed out to keep the latch securely closed.

Unfortunately if you want an aluminum oberndorf guard for a M70, you're confined to either the PTG or spending close to $500 for a Sunny Hill (which is actually 2-pieces that are screwed together). I wish there were other makers out there willing to produce this product, but all the people I've talked to have no interest in producing one.

I bought a PTG Oberndorf for a Win 70. It took over 3 months to get it. The finish is good but the milled slot for the trigger was not long enough at the rear and the trigger hit on it. I had it milled longer instead of going back thru that dog and pony show.

And $500 for a triggerguard/floorplate is BS. No reason to charge that much unless a guy wants to brag about how much it costs for snob appeal.

If they only sold one SKU, there’d still be no guarantee what would arrive.

I’ve had one on a M70 SA for a couple years with no problems. Would and did buy again.

PT&G is right over here in White City.. they have great products and poor management.

I have the luxury of being able to go over to their facility, where you can buy something straight over the counter......3 months to get something ( in my experience at least locally) is not that an availability problem, its just they are that mismanaged... I've been in a lot of businesses in my professional career, and can pretty much tell real quick which ones are well ran and which ones are not...

I use their products, but then again, I go over and pick it up at their place.
JRaw, since you are fellow Virginia boy, if you need a little assistance, drop me a PM...
Will be happy to help out a fellow campfire member...

Yep, I've heard about the management, plus some.

They lied to me multiple times and have refused to refund my money though I have a “credit”. I’ll never buy from them again. If anyone wants my “credit” they can have it for .50 on the dollar. Pm me if your in the market for junk and want a good deal.
