Niw 072 sounds less gay so I'd have the headstamps printed backwards if I ever chose to use it.

Headstamps matter a great deal to me as long as they are the correct ones.

I know it does matter to the game. I recall shooting a few rabbits on a mound using my 308Win, and how they just sat there in disbelief as I blew them apart one by one. I reckon they were thinking "I don't believe this guy is using a 308 on us". I'm pretty sure they were sitting there with their jaws dropped.

I would say the bullets matter first and then the headstamp. But my question would be "Is there a line matching the size of the game and bullet/weight/caliber these days with the current technology, and where is it ? " It seems if you're shooting anything bigger than a 270 for North American game you're laughably over-gunned.
I've taken some deer with smaller calibers and wasn't impressed. Still favor 30 cals and above for most of my hunting, I guess old ideas (like old hunters) die hard.

I heard about some idiot in Montana used 22-250 ammo in his 7-08. Same guy ended up moving to Florida. Probably a good thing before he hurt himself.

This is what draws a separation in my way of thinking, are we talking 1000 yd matches, 800 yd matches, or are we talking long shots at game animals at 400 yds? As to previous comments regarding bullet weight and caliber. I would rather shoot 500 lbs plus game with 165 gr and up. Shooting moose at 200 yds I’d rather have 190 or 200 gr load from 308 Win or 06 Springfield than 7mm-08 or 280 Rem. Just a slight more insurance policy at that range. Again if medium bores are so sufficient why are dangerous game hunted predominately with 416, 458, 470 and 500s, why not 300 mags. Because the do not offer the best probability of stopping big animals in their tracks. Can they work, sure. Probability and statistically not as well at typical hunting ranges on large game. I will be the first to admit not much is better at long range hunting than a 7mm Practical for the well versed at 700-800 yds on game, a 7mm Rem Mag is for the less we’ll versed at 500 yds. 7mm is a great caliber for most North American game.

As in know where your schit is going....

Shot placement always matters the most.

I killed a few axis deer ( a big buck still in velvet for a pedestal mount) and a Scimitar Horned Oryx ( 41 1/2 bull) with a little 6mm/222 Magnum ( 6x47) with an 85gr xbt. I had a long barrel ( 27") and got 2900fps with a pinch of BLC2, 243Win speed. But you had to shoot it right! The headstamp didn't match up either. Only reason I had it was I was recovering from a neck surgery ( miserable few months) and had a chance to go shoot some Exotics. I had already been there and used a 220 Swift/55gr TB and the Rancher wanted it. So I traded him the Swift and some money for the oryx. I had a brake on the Swfit (too see where my bullets hit on varmints) but the 6x47 didn't have one. I later had that rifle converted/rechambered to a 243 and took it to South Africa. I left it with my Afrikaan friend. He liked the long barrel.
I killed game with a 6mm/284 and 6.5/284, no headstamp match either. BUT, when I went though Customs in South Africa and Namibia, the rifle/Headstamp very much mattered, ha. Although my 35 Whelen Imp slipped by!

If you have a choice, might as well stack the deck in your favor and use the best bullet made for your specific application though? But sure, a guy with ping pong bullets that's knows how to put them where he wants is better off than a guy with the best rifle/scope/bullet available that has no clue.
