Just took home this early M70 carbine in .270 here in Alberta for $800 CDN. Got extra holes in it which are crooked...BUBBA...plan is to install a peep anyways. Once home and disassembled I see the bolt number is 25 higher than the receiver serial number(24,XXX). Bolts got mixed up 79 years ago at a shop??? Needed a new bolt and one so close in serial number was found???I doubt that. Get a gunsmith to check headspace??? Fire the rifle several times from a distance(string) and measure brass after...if all seems well enjoy the rifle as is??? Im gonna assume its been fired many times as is...

Get everything checked out by a competent gunsmith.

I'm passionate about old Winchesters but it's hard to find one, especially anything pre war, that hasn't been monkeyed with or bubba'd up. It does make it easier to justify using them and taking them out in the weather that often accompanies hunting season. Enjoy your purchase. At least you'll use it. There's a ton of pre 64's tucked away in safes that never even see the light of day. These guns were made to use.

Got last years WT buck with a Remington Model 8 in .35 Rem with the factory irons. I then began searching for a bolt gun with the better peep sights to hunt deer with. Modern scoped rifles are beginning to bore me. The want list included Model 54 and 70 Winchesters, Remington 30 Express, and of course a nice M98 set up for peeps. This should work fine as a vintage deer rifle, and the fact that its a more rare carbine is kinda cool. Im sure it will measure out fine and with a 57WJS in place it will be seeing the woods this November. Might need a proper Filson coat to go with this!!

Yes a red and black plaid coat would be the ticket. I bought a pair of the plaid lace up legging pants from 40's and coat from the 50's this spring to wear this season. Might get a funny look or two but don't care.

I used to do the Woolrich plaid coat thing when I hunted my 30-30's.

They are quite rare, I have 3 in 22 Hornet, 270 and 30-06...

Correct me if I'm wrong but the current Lyman 57wjs should fit this prewar without removing any wood???

I would buy a box of 270 ammo and shoot it. Never mind the "pull the trigger with a string" crap. You can have headspace gauged beforehand if it makes you feel better. GD

Those are beauties, I especially like the wood in the one on the top. I really want a pre war Model 70, when I have the bucks.
