A couple of weeks ago, I sold my Weatherby MkV, .300, after owning and hunting with it for over 30 years. I have always regarded it as one of the very best elk cartridges, and in fact have taken a good number of elk with the rifle. It has also been with me on hunts to Mongolia, Africa, and multi-species hunts here in the US.

As age creeps up on me, I just don't like the recoil anymore, and I know that my .280, .270 WSM, .30-06, and .257 Wby. will handle everything and anything I still want to hunt- still, I'm gonna miss smacking down big stuff with authority with that big, flat-shooting .30.

Also sold off my ammo and brass, so now I'm completely out of the .300 Wby. business. I hope the new owner of the rifle enjoys it as much as I did, for so many years- this fall, I'm going to take my .280 elk hunting to fill my cow tag, and tell myself how great it is to carry a lighter, shorter rifle, with less recoil and muzzle blast. Hope I haven't made a big mistake!

Sometimes ya just gotta move on. .280 will kill’em just as dead.

My 72 year old hunting partner did the same thing this year. Went from a 300 to a 280... much lighter rifle. We shall see what he thinks of it.

Have no fear...you have a 30-06.

You’ll be glad you chose the 280. However, I have the same love affair as you for Wby Mk V in 7 Wby, no way I’d ever sell it.

I’ve not owned a 300 Wby, but for some inexplicable reason I have had an
“Irrational affection” for the 300 Win Mag. I’ve had several and actually I owned an OG 77
300, before I owned any 7 RM.

I have killed quite a few WT with my 70 Black Shadow. My 2 largest WT, 1 heaviest body, &
1 largest racked buck plus several others.

Literally I hate to think of NOT owning and NOT hunting it.
Irrational, yes. It is what it is.

Based on what you have in the safe, and the fact that you no longer tolerate the recoil as well, it sounds like you made a very sound decision.

I doubt you'll miss it once you start using the .280, .270 WSM, .30-06, and .257 Wby a little more.

You could have loaded it down a bit. I have two Kleinguenther 300 Weatherby’s. I load them down to shoot a 150 Barnes at 3000 fps. Not bad to shoot at all.

A more practical approach is usually not a mistake.

not me.....pass it down to a grandkid or give to some deserving yougster you might know

Every gun I sold or traded I regretted doing so.

Problem is, kids, grandkids, etc. already have as many guns 'gifted' to them from me as they will ever use, not counting what will be left to them when I'm gone!
Plus, nowadays, just giving away firearms is a big problem.

I’ve traded or sold stuff I wasn’t using, wasn’t gonna use, putting that equity in something I do and will use.

Nothing wrong with that. In my case, like posted already, my son has more guns than safe room as do I.

I never move my “keepers”, but other stuff, not a problem.

I look forward, not back. No regrets.

Dang Scotty. Send him my way, I'll let him shoot some of my 6.5 creedmoor rifles. He may like those even more than the 280... Just sayin.. Oh, and on the topic of 300 wby magnum rifles. There was a guy selling his at a local site I frequent and in his ad, it read push feed model 70. In his pictures, it was a classic CRF. He only wanted $550.00 for it. I told him that the rifle pictured was a CRF. He took the listing off right after I told him. Hell, I would have bought the rifle, but honestly he didn't even know what he had... That classic 300wby is a rare bird and worth far more than his asking price... I can relate to the op though. I sold my sporter m1917 300WBY and have regrets.... I still save my die set, just in case I run across the perfect 300wby again..

I turned 60 this year and don't shoot my 300 WBY as much anymore because of the recoil but my wife gave it to me soon after we got married and I won't sell it. I hope my son expresses interest it in the future.

I still remember the expression on my son's face the first time that he touched off his new .300 Weatherby at the bench. He likely had that same pained look when he bought factory ammo for that thing. Over the years he has blown the heck out of the woods behind his deer lots of times, but he has since retired it for a more sensible cartridge choice. I suppose it depends on where and what you hunt, but here deer are at stones throw ranges and there isn't the need for some big magnum. I've got that same issue now with a 7# 7mm RM that I built up for a one size fits all rifle. What a terrific mountain rifle, but my mountain climbing days are behind me and a 7mm-08 made up the same way as that RM makes more sense. I should really sell off that big 7, but it so nice and a proven rifle that I just can't.

I picked up a xtr sporter in a 300 Weatherby for $400 and it came with a leupold vx11c. Anyhow rifle is getting cerakoted sniper gray. The floor plate was off a stainless classic. So said screw it cerakote it, then bed it and go shoot it. Far as the classics in the Weatherby calibers, from what I gathered/read they made the 270 and 300 Weatherby on a 1 yr production run. I had a classic in the 270 Weatherby, my buddy wanted it more than me so I sold it to him.. the stainless classic in the 300 Weatherby is a rare one, they said the 270 Weatherby was made in stainless as well. I never seen one.

My .300's would be the last to go.. Thinking of getting just one more!!!

This humors me. My 308 load runs 2900 fps with 48.5 gr of powder.

Not me. I'm sure my son or somebody will enjoy mine after I go. That is the last rifle I will ever part with. Taken 17 head of African game with it..

I took my .300 Wby to Africa on my first safari, and it performed perfectly on 2 Gemsbok, a greater Kudu, a Hartmann's Mountain Zebra, and Warthog.
On several subsequent safaris, I have used a 7x57, a .30-06, my Mathews bow, and a .375 Ruger, all with equally perfect results.
Next trip over will be to finish off my 'Tiny Ten' slam, using either a .223 or a .22 Hornet.

I, too, have a 'last rifle I will ever part with', but the .300 wasn't one of them!

He’s not likely to dip below 7mm much for elk. He’s an old timer who believes in bigger Bullets and I don’t argue much with him. He’s skinned a lot of elk in his years on the mountain and confidence in the bullet means a bunch.

550 for a CRF 70 300 Weatherby would have made me open up my wallet.

Yeah, my elk hunting partner is the same way (being 20 years older than me). Actually hates the 7mm rem mag. Says it's not enough gun for elk. He still packs his 338wm religiously. On the classic sporter 300wby, I just felt sorry for that guy. He really didn't know what he had. I would have felt like I was taking advantage of him....Now, if he would have kept the listing active and didn't listen to me, I would have snagged it with no remorse at all. Just sayin...
