Hey guys,

Sorry to continue the Fieldcraft circlejerk. I have a opportunity to pick up one of the black/green threaded fieldcrafts at a killer price.

I already have a tikka sl in said caliber that shoots well, however if I could lose a pound off it it would be great and get more field time.

I will typically practice to 1k with my hunting rifles. I have a Kimber in 308 that to be honest is absolutely a 500 and in rifle. Not bad when you’re just hunting, but for practice it’s a bit of a bummer trying to push beyond that. Some people say it’s typical of an ultralight rifle, some say it’s just a Kimber thing.

What experience do you guys have with the fieldcraft at these distances? To be clear I do not intend, nor do I take shots at game at this distance, it’s purely for practice. 600 is about my limit, I just like to ring steel for practice further smile

Thank you in advance, and again apologies for continuing the fieldcraft circlejerk.
sounds like my kind of party. This circle jerk needs a Bigstick
What is limiting the Kimber 308 to 500 yards?

Loads, scope, shooter?

If I were a betting man, I’d say wind.
The 6.5 Creed isn’t a thousand yard hunting cartridge.

If you can read it, you can read it. Creed ain’t gonna matter 2 schits.

For you, I would agree.

To be honest I’m not exactly sure - I know that sounds bad. I can shoot my creed to 1k with little issue, however the Kimber at 500 I can get a first round hit on steel(8” round) but after that ?? If I had to guess it’s scope and wind, and maybe a little of me. The tikka is a pound and a half heavier, the Kimber is right at 6lbs with a scope and 3 rounds.

If you read my original post the only thing I’m shooting at 1k is steel.
What load and projectile are you using in the 308?

Swampy is back!!
Why not keep what you have for hunting and mid range shooting play. Then put together a rifle for elr plinking? 1k and beyond shooting is all about consistency and accurate reading of the environmentals.

In my experience, it is hard to get positional and mechanical consistency with a lightweight rifle.

With a purpose built rifle, however you can get the platform consistently and hone your wind calls and mechanics.

After that, it is in the loads.

You don’t have to spend a fortune.
