Other than shooting heavier bullets, what can a 7-08 do that the 260 rem cant? I have a older model 7 in 260 rem that shoot really well and a Sako FL in 7-08 that shoots a little better. Debating on dumping the 7-08 for a FL in 30-06.
Posted By: addicted Re: 260 rem vs 7-08 rem - 10/20/19
Both have high BC bullets
If elk hunting I’d take the 7mm-08 over the 260 (more frontal area).
Predator, hog deer hunting the 260
If you don’t reload, the 7mm-08 has more factory loads available.

I love my 260’s, but I’d never go elk hunting with it. I have more powerful cartridges for that application.

Pick the one you like... antelope to elk, there’s just no real-world difference.
Posted By: DCR48 Re: 260 rem vs 7-08 rem - 10/21/19
Had the same idea. But the 7-08 does everything the 260 does plus a little more. Kept the 7-08

Have one 260, three 7mm-08's. Keeping them all.

I have the 7mm-08, don’t have a 260, but do have a couple of 6.5 Creedmoor rifles. Both kill anything I hit.

BOTH my fav cartidges. i have multiples of both in my safe. flip a coin or some crap like that. both as good as you can get for a whitetail rifle at sane ranges.
good luck but i know i'd keep both,

Yup. Not a lick of difference on game.
Posted By: sbhooper Re: 260 rem vs 7-08 rem - 10/21/19
It is all about the bullet. Not enough cartridge difference to care. Put a 127 LRX, 139 Scenar, or a host of other bullets, in the .260 and they will kill as well as anything. The 7 will handle a bit bigger bullets, but not an issue, since most shoot a 140, anyway. My .260s and Creeds are my go-to rifles, now.

Keep both, get the 30-06. One never has enough guns, knives, or outdoor equipment......

Bout the difference of peeing off the left side of the porch vs peeing off the right side. Unless it's in your wife's flower bed it don't matter.

So, not to detract from the original post, but do you see more difference in the 243 vs 260/6.5CM?

Many factory 243 wins have a 10 twist barrel, so bullets above ~90gns will not be ideal for the factory twist rate.
The 260 , depending on manufacturer will have twist rates to 8 twist, 6.5 CM's are available from many manufacturers in 8 twist and their over all length of cartridge is compatible with a short action (2.8") with heavy or VLD bullets.
An 8 twist 6.5 CM will run bullets at least to 147gn's, this would be the choice, especially with all factory set up.

The 260 was standardized with a 1-9" twist. The 6.5 Creedmoor was standardized with a 1-8" twist. One of several reasons the Creedmoor has taken off, and the 260 never did...

A properly constructed bullet that is properly placed is more important to a successful outcome than either head stamp or bullet diameter.
Posted By: Pappy348 Re: 260 rem vs 7-08 rem - 10/23/19
Keep the rifle you like best. Not sure what an FL is, but I'd be inclined to keep most any Sako rather than almost any Remington, unless you really need the extra money it might bring when sold to finance the new one.

Short of maybe Alaskan moosies and large bears, I'm thinking you've already got the bases covered, so why sell a good one in the hand to take a chance with something else? Saying this violates my long-standing policy of encouraging others to spend money whenever possible, but rules are made to be broken.

Personally when I want larger than my 243 I want to get more larger and prefer my 7-08. I did have a 6.5x55 but although its a great compromise between the 243 and 7-08 I no longer like compromise as much as I did.

I researched both cartridges when I bought a new rifle last year. I like them both. I settled on the 7mm-08 for a couple of reasons. First, there are more choices available in factory ammunition, and, at present time, I do not reload. Also, as a resident of Kentucky, the minimum Elk caliber is .270 diameter. Therefore, in the unlikely event I get drawn for a Kentucky elk tag, the 7mm-08 would be legal while the .260 would not be.

I have been extremely happy with my choice. Between my son and I, 5 deer were taken cleanly with the rifle last season with Hornady GMX bullets. We look forward to putting more venison in the freezer with it this season as well.

However, if I were to use a rifle for deer hunting only, either caliber would make an excellent choice.

Sound reasoning, my friend.

Goofy thinking on the part of Kentucky FWP, solid thinking on your part. The 7-08 is a great cartridge.

You wanna sling 120gr or 140gr? .260 will get the same done with less recoil in a light rifle because of 120gr bullets. I don't think one is any better than the other on deer, but the .260 is better on the shooter. Well, this shooter, anyway.

Agreed, Brad. Not sure why they put that caliber limitation in place considering most western states that have elk populations do not have it in place. In addition to the .260, I also really like the .25-06 but declined to buy it for the same reasons as listed above.

I thinking about getting a 99 with a custom stock rebored to 260. It’s a 243 now. I’ll have it rebored with a one in eight twist. It should be a fun rifle.

Not a lot of difference in those two cartridges. Not sure what the FL SAKO model is but I am a big fan of the older A series SAKOs if it shoots better I would probably keep it. The smoothness and fit and finish of the SAKOs is usually much better than a Remington. I like the model 7 and the 260 is about ideal in that setup.

Not a huge difference between 7-08 and 30-06 until you shoot bullets heavier than 180 grains. Unless it fills a niche like Elk, Bear or an all around hunting cartridge I don't think you gain much as a deer cartridge except recoil and more factory load options.

Has anyone tried the new Winchester StaBall powder in the 7-08, 260 or 6.5 Creed. The numbers look pretty good.

I have a 700ti 7mm-08, and a Model 7 in .260, but use the 7mm-08 considerably more than the .260.
Posted By: Seafire Re: 260 rem vs 7-08 rem - 10/29/19
I prefer the 260 over the 7/08, but admit there is no difference in them as a batch of other forum members point out..

HOWEVER

I like a Sako over a Rem Action, big time....

That would be my deciding factor....

And a Sako in an 06 won't really do much better in the long run vs the 7/08 or 260, if you can place your shot....
but if ya want a Sako in 06, the above shouldn't matter...

practicality should have nothing to do with it...

I'd fly with a Sako by choice over a Remington any day...

It will be interesting to see how it goes. The data they post for a max load in the Creed, is just a moderate load with Reloder 26. It will meter well, though, being a ball powder. It looks real good for the 270.

You can shoot 120's in 7-08; mine loves Barnes Vor-Tx 120TTSX; light recoil and effective.

I live in elk country and have a 260. Nothing wrong with the 260 vs elk.

You and the game won't notice a difference between the two.

That is like saying there is no difference between a 243 and a 260, or between a 280 and a 30-06. Granted, the difference between the 260 and the 7mm-08 is small, but there is a difference!
Posted By: las Re: 260 rem vs 7-08 rem - 11/06/19
Well,(to cover caliber bases above), I have a .243 700 that it took me 30years to get to shoot under 2.5 MOA. Never really liked that caliber, so never really warped it in (only rifle I have had that DEMANDED just the right amount of forend pressure point- all the rest shoot best with free-float) but I've killed a bunch of stuff with it, including my first dall sheep at 20 yards, second at 100, caribou, black bear and a moose. Nothing over 200 yards, and 2.5MOA is plenty good enough for that! I've never used anything on game except 100 gr., which it likes best. Got her down to MOA now. Tempermental bitch.

Then I rebarreled a 725 from rust in .244 with a .260 700TI SS takeoff.. I really like that gun. It doesn't shoot anything under about 3 inches, except 140 gr. Any 140 gr. MOA . I can live with that. Do need to fix that extractor tho. It took two bull caribou as a single shot this fall on successive days, but waiting for the brass to cool and be shaken out is a PITA..... smile. Said replacement has been sitting in the cabinet for a year now.....I'll get to it.... I was looking for a 7-08 barrel when the .260 barrel came up. Still have never had a 7-08!

I did just buy a lightly used Mod 70 FW in 7X57. Have yet to shoot it, but will before I start the mods. Need a baseline, after all, but that barrel channel definately needs work - pressure points all over the place- and very rough. Most likely an epoxy rebed (and pillar bed?) also - what is in there is just basically a skim coat not to be trusted. Poorly sealed too. A bit of trigger work and I expect it to shoot well. With somehing.

Could be why it was practically a steal! But I've always wanted a 70FW.

I don't expect any real difference in field performance between those three rifles, given proper bullet placement. The .243 proved adequate on a 3 year old bull moose, and the .260 on a cow elk. The 7mm is a proven killer caliber from waaaaaay back. My '06's and .338WM don't do it any better, but no worse either. smile

i gave up selling off guns several decades ago.
