Thinking about a rifle I saw yesterday but not sure exactly what it is, need some help. The rifle looks like a KS but it has Remington Custom Shop stamped in the top of the barrel. Rifle is blue with jeweled bolt, black stock that looks like a KS stock. Looks new to me, caliber is 300 rum. They want 899 for it. Can anyone give any input on this, is 899 a good price, do the newer custom shop labeled guns compare to the older KS rifles. I should have got the serial number while I had it in my hands but didnt.

What are the 2 letters on the left side of the barrel before the serial number? Those will tell you the date when it was made. Then you can cross reference that date with that year Remington catalog (do google search for catalogs). $899 is a steal for the KS mountain rifle, you can always re barrel it after your first shoulder surgery with the RUM too.

I remember a blurb from a Nosler manual about how they got exceptional grouping and consistency with IMR4350 and 180 grain bullets out of the 300 RUM, and it was with a middle charge weight of 80 gr. at about 3100 fps. That's right in the garden variety 300 mag slot, rather than the big boomer top end. Still snappy in a light rifle, but not as rough as 95 gr. of RL25 at 3350!

Sounds like it could be a Gen 1 Alaska Wilderness Rifle (AWR) based on cal and stock color. If it is, the stock is the same as the KS, but painted black from the factory instead of gray. The current AWR is not the same animal as the Gen 1 rifles.
