Another which one should go thread. I have some rifles that just sit and collect dust. Which ones do you think should go down the road? Keep in mind that I have two kids under 5
22 Hornet in a 77/22
223 in a stainless Hawkeye
22-250 in a stainless 70 Classic Featherweight
243 in a stainless Hawkeye
25-06 in a 70 Classic
7 STW in a 70 Classic
30-06 in a JC Higgins 50
338 Win Mag in a 70 Classic (I dislike this one)
416 in a Hawkeye Alaskan (This is way better than the 338)
I’d keep whatever shot better between the 22 Hornet and 223.
Rebarrel your Stainless FW to 7mm-08 and hunt it.
I’d pitch the 25-06 unless it shot WAY better than the 243, since 6mm bullet options with a 9 twist aren’t bad and you get a shorter gun overall for your kids. If money weren’t an issue, rebarrel the 25-06 to something fun with a decent twist rate. Maybe a 280 AI?
If I had a magnum length M70 action, I’d make a 300 H&H, but thats just me.
Keep the 30-06 for general principal.
Pitch the 338 since you don’t like it....to me!
416? I’d have no use for it, but if you do, why not keep it since it sounds like you like it.
The 223 and the 30-06 are what I've used pretty much for everything the last 3 years. My dad and brother used to farm, and 90% of the crop damage deer fell to these two
I did have a 300 H&H in a 1917, but with it being bigger, heavier, and longer than the Higgins, the Higgins was used way more.
If you're interested in the 338 shoot me a PM.
The 416 is useless, but it's impressive. It's sure not hurting anything hanging onto it
If it were me (assuming I would want to get rid of any) ...
Keep:
223 in a stainless Hawkeye
22-250 in a stainless 70 Classic Featherweight
243 in a stainless Hawkeye
25-06 in a 70 Classic
30-06 in a JC Higgins 50
338 Win Mag in a 70 Classic (I dislike this one)
Gone:
22 Hornet in a 77/22
7 STW in a 70 Classic
416 in a Hawkeye Alaskan (This is way better than the 338)
I'd get rid of the Hornet, the 25-06, the 7 STW, the 30-06, the 338 Win mag, and the 416.
Then I'd buy a 7-08 and/or a 308 with the proceeds. Probably a Fieldcraft when they become available again. And also invest in good scopes for what I had left.
If that STW Classic is stainless I’ll be more than happy to get it out of your way.
Keep them all and buy mor
Keep the 223, 243, and model 50 30-06 - everything else is just superfluous anyway. Consider using some of the proceeds to buy a good 22 LR and let the kids learn on it.
drover
Get rid of the 338 for sure. May as well send me the Hornet.
Get that 22 hornet the heck out of there. P.M. me if you want my FFL dealers address to sell it.
Get rid of the 338 for sure. May as well send me the 223 .

338 is a no brainer, as you already don’t like it. Start with that ...

The check will be on the way tomorrow!
The 338 is sold to Gooch_McGrundle. I do have (2) 10-22s, a stainless boat paddle 77/22, and a youth 514 to start the kids on.
The STW and 25-06 aren't stainless.
I'd ditch the STW and the Hornet, too. There's nothing you couldn't do with what would remain.
7 STW in a 70 Classic
30-06 in a JC Higgins 50
338 Win Mag in a 70 Classic (I dislike this one)
416 in a Hawkeye Alaskan (This is way better than the 338)
I generally oppose selling off rifles, at least until one is so old he can't hunt/shoot anymore. However, if one absolutely has to sell off some dead wood, my thoughts:
The 7STW, 338WM, and 416 have little practical hunting value in Michigan, and thus would be good candidates for thinning the herd.
The JC Higgins in 30-06 is about as unremarkable a rife as there is, and would be another good one to move.
The JC Higgins in 30-06 is about as unremarkable a rife as there is, and would be another good one to move.
Especially with that crappy FN Mauser action.
Sell the 338 since you dislike it. Easy fix.
Shuck the 338, I just bought a 338 Sako, eager to sight it in!!

Exactly! Those things are old, and, even worse, not made in Amurica. Should'a been culled years ago. :-)
(
for those about to freak out and go on a long winded rant about the well-known quality and beauty of the FN Mauser action, note the smiley face indicating humor/sarcasm)
Still, unless one is planning on a build using that FN Mauser action, the Higgins 50 is not worth keeping because the barrel and stock aren't in the same league as the action. And, I have a Higgins 50 in 30-06 and 270Win. Both are poor shooters and their plain, cost-cutting aesthetics don't compensate for the unimpressive groups. From the list presented, if one has to get rid of a few rifles, the Higgins is a good one to move.
JMHO
I would keep the 223, 243, 30-06, and 416. Do as Drover suggested and get a 22 lr for the kids to learn.
I’d sell every last one of them, get myself an all-arounder, a 243, a 223, a 22LR and be done with it.
Send the 338 and 416 down the road unless you're going to Africa.

Pretty sure you answered your own question... 338
Get rid of what you don’t like first, then move to those you won’t ever use. Hard to rationalize I know lol
Keep them all and buy mor
THIS!!!
You have kids and they can ALL be passed down and used. Not to mention, they wont be in their names either! 😉

Similar opinion here.
Keep the Hornet, 223, and 243.
Sell the rest, but....
Keep the Higgins 30-06 but make it a do-it-all hunting gun via a Mickey stock, a Wisner two-position safety on the shroud, recrown the barrel, get the whole gun salt-bath nitrided (QPQ), and install really good glass.
Keep the 25-06 especially if it shoots 100 and 120 bullets accurately. You won't need the .243
also keep 416 if you dislike 338. (I would keep the 30-06 and dump both of these)
Decide which of the 3 .22s you want to keep. The above is my understanding of what you expressed.
If it were for myself, I would keep
22-250
25-06
30-06
and sell the rest.
