I picked up a 600 mohawk in 308 . Somebody decided to stain the stock with a cherry looking stain and it was kind of sticky.
Cleaned it of with acetone and it looks great. Mounted a VarixIII 2.5-8 on the see thru weaver rings that were on it
I need to replace the dreaded bulging TG and remove the red recoil pad.
Going to try to find a factory butt plate.
Any trigger mods that will improve pull on trigger?
If the rain gets out of here tomorrow im hoping to shoot it
Got yourself a nice old classic. Had several friends that still hunt with those.
My father’s Mohawk .308 is his Old Reliable. It shoots nearly everything MOA or better. The factory triggers can be tuned well enough.
Just stuck a Timney in my 660. Had to shave the stock a fuzz with the Dremel so the safety would operate smoothly.
I just stuck a little Weaver Classic 2.5-7 in Burris Signature dual dovetails on top of it.
No opportunity to shoot it yet but have a hunch it may become a favorite treestand rifle.

I’m with you down to the see thru rings. If it was mine, they’d have to go.
Good luck with it. They generally shoot very well.

Going to try to find a factory butt plate.
.........................
I might have one....
I'll look today.
With full power factory loads mine kicks like an angry mule. That plastic butt plate needs to be a nice thick recoil pad! But I stayed with plastic and loaded up some 125 gr bullets that about replicate a 243 Win round. Nice!
Like you, I replace the plastic trigger guard with an aluminum one. The maker sells them in the Classifieds I believe.
I bedded the lug and action on mine and now get 3 bullets touching at 50 yards. Sighted in 1-inch high at 100 yds gives me a nice little rifle for the scrawny whitetails around here. It has dropped more than a few hogs, too!
Didn’t mess with my trigger just installed a timney
You may want to stop by and pick up a mouthpiece before shooting it.
I had a 600 and a 660, the 600 in 308. The stock hit my cheek hard and kick was more than I wanted. Went from 600 to 660 in 6mm. It gave good accuracy and handling was great. A fellow hunter wanted it more than it was worth so it went home with him. The only complaint I had with mechanical workings of gun was a very stiff safety which required heavy thumb pressure to move it.
These rude little rifles aren't for the flat bill man bun crowd. These rifles were made when men were men. Isn't there a commercial that says your testosterone is lower than your dad's who's is lower than his dad.
Didnt get a chance to shoot it today. I have a model seven in 308 and a 700 mountain guide in 308. They are snappy but nothing like my old 270 ADL
Here are a couple of pics, I wish I would have taken a couple with that sticky cherry stain finish that was on it. Need to put a couple coats of truoil on the stock to reseal it after wiping it with acetone
Where’s the “like” button?
"With full power factory loads mine kicks like an angry mule. That plastic butt plate needs to be a nice thick recoil pad!"
I bought a 660 back in 1973 and yes, that gun kicked like a mule. Well, it did until my kids gifted me a set of hearing protectors. Holy cow! What happened to the kick. It was the rather vicious muzzle blast that made it seem like the rifle had serious recoil. hat rifle has undergone some serious transformation with an early H&S Precision stock and custom paint job. One of these days I'll replace the crappy plastic trigger guard floorplate. That rifle took a lot of deer many years ago.

Wouldnt mind having a 600 or 660 in 222 someday.
Imagine that....
Imagine that....
You band those little critters too?
Fuuck the flat bill faaags......
I keep my 600 in .308W in my old pickup. The short light little rifle is really handy. It's stoked with 150's now but up until this past year all I'd used in it were 180's. My trigger is factory but tuned a bit, the safety comes off a little too easy in all actuality. I topped mine with a 2.5x fixed Weaver.

Why the heck would anyone stain over that?
I've had the 600 Mohawk in a 243 years ago and a 660 in 308. Shot a lot of game with the 660 and really liked it. About all I used in it were 165gr Hornady's, they shot better than anything and never failed me. While in Alaska I carried that 660 i the bush with me loaded with 200gr Bullet's. Probably the ugliest rifle I've ever owned but loved it.
I too had a 600 in 308 for many years.
It was extremely accurate with 150 Corelokts
I think everybody in the family filled at least one tag with it over the years.
I killed my first turkey with it too
I have shot a few of these for years. Didn't know they recoiled. Coquille Valley Machine Works has the replacement triggerguards of aluminum. He's in the classifieds. Do a search. Be Well, Rustyzipper.
308s don't recoil that much but the 350s will wake you up a bit.

I bet.
For those who think the .308 kicks a bit much, I'd suggest trying 125 gr. NAB, NBT or 130 gr. Horn SP, (not the varmint version).. At around 3,100 fps they will blow thru a WT, generally with an exit and good internal damage, more DRT than not.
If a 130/125 will exit a chest shot WT, you may not need heavier bullets on that class of game. And the faster bullet does have some advantage.
Try one of those and I suggest 59 gr. BG powder in the '06. I shot some Ralph Council 130 gr. hand made BR bullets in my '06 HVA and they were one hole. Ralph says they work well on game, just never tried one.
.308 will shoot them as well as the '06.

22", #2 contour Shilen. It just looks longer on the Mohawk.
Puts a bit more weight forward, still light. I like the way it handles better than before.
I got some of these surplus MidwayUSA bullets with no name. Sold as 80 gr., they actually weighed 75 gr. Research showed they are 75 gr. TAP SBR bullets for Hornady .223 short barreled tactical ammo. These are not available as a handloading component. I was surprised how well the 8 twist Shilen shot them. They're no longer available at Midway, got a few extra from a Fire contributor, so I have enough to last a while. I think they'd really do a job on a WT or a hog. Other projects have edged this one to the back burner. One of these days...
I know, I know, 3 shot group...

That brings back good memories; my first CF rifle. Wish I'd kept it.

Thanks. Looks about right on the Mohawk. Was just asking because still thinking about transforming my 660 into something different and have been kicking barrel length around.

Nice man... How ya like that 673?
Its a great truck gun about 1.5 moa with Nosler factory ammo but I really like my 458 Win Mag for just plan whacking stuff. The 673 would be perfect for Kodiak and I haven't got there yet.
I like that 673. & have one. I have only shot the 600 in 350 and it is NOT a bench gun. A nice accumulation of 600 types. Thanks for the pictures. Be Well, Rustyzipper.
Have a 308 660.
In a Brown Precision stock, shortened a bit, Decelerator pad.
It fits me, we are deadly.
That said,
long throat
short mag, can't get near the lands, have to be very careful loading it
as is. If first 2 rounds aren't completely back, they bind when you add more.
The follower tips, gets jammed. No floorplate. PITA!
And .010 excessive headspace. No problem, but need to be aware.
Trigger sucks.
Was going to put in Romney. There old triggers were like a ULA.
Safety locked the bolt, push it down, can open.
New ones leave the bolt unlocked.
I have 2 too many guns like that.
No more.
Stuck with the trigger.
Recoil isn't bad.
But she is jumpy.
These threads are really making me want to build a 600/660. I was thinking this would be a great 22/6mm CM. Maybe a McM mod 7 stock with it...

Sounds to me like you need a rebarrel and a Timney.

Can't decide if I want mine to be a 250 Savage or a 7-08.
Probably end up a 6mm AI.
McMillan Model 7 or Mountain Rifle stock?
I think I would get better rings. See through rings make it hard to get behind the scope properly

Will a model Seven stock be a drop in? I wondered also if the model Seven bottom metal/floor plate could be fitted.

Not sure why it made the trigger guard blurry.
As for scope an rings its a VX5 2.5 x10 in a set of leupy 30mm low rings on a model 7 base.
Duplex or Firedot reticle?

600 has a shorter rear tang on the action so It will not work in a Seven stock

350's & 35 Rem
For some reason when I see a picture of a model 600 in .350 it makes me think of late 60s muscle cars.
-Model 600-- Take a rifle that is small and light, design a cartridge for it thats just a bit more powerful than other short action catridges, put rifle in a laminated stock that some would say is garish, tack on a ventilated rib for good measure.
--GTO, Roadrunner etc-- Take your smallest model, stuff an engine from a fullsize car in it, paint them in garish colors, slap a rear wing or stripe package on them for good measure.
Even though more modern rifles may out shoot them, and modern cars outperform them, hard to match the overall package of each that creates soul and panache of these rifles (and cars) that made them classics that have endured the years better than anyone could have predicted.
Thanks to those of you that posted pics.
My 600 308 I picked up this summer. It shoots 150gr Sierras very well
