LGS has a 22-250, red pad, tang safety with VXIi 3-9x40 for $600, is that a good buy?

This ^^^

A friend traded one in 22/250 to a local gun shop a couple of years ago, he had shot it so much that when you ran a brush or patch down the barrel there was no resistance whatever - that had to be one of the most used up barrels I had ever seen.

I have three 77Vs, a .220 Swift, a .25-06, and a .308. They are all accurate. None have been bedded or had trigger jobs, etc. The last two I bought new a long time ago. I bought the Swift used almost thirty years ago and it's on the second barrel; first barrel shot great for a good while and the second one shoots very well, too. I'd rather have the 77Vs than anything Ruger makes or has made.

Boy, not me..... The MKII VT models with the two-stage trigger (and better barrels), slapped into a sporter stock to make 'em carry and balance more like the tangers, is MY preference..... Give me the stainless or target grey, anytime....

I bought a used 77V in 220 Swift in the early 80’s. Pretty sure those tang safety models had Shilen barrels. The one I bought shot wonderfully. Finally had to quit chasing the lands and had it rebarreled. Great rifle.

The previous owner had the barrel cut to 20” so he could keep in on his truck dash. When I had the new barrel put on, I kept it at 20”.

So, is it worth $600 with scope? Probably, but scope the bore.

What makes you think they had Shilen barrels?

I heard Douglas, more than once, but I have no way of knowing or verifying. Regardless, whoever made the barrel on my 77V Swift made a good one.

I also have a Ruger 77V in 220 Swift with a Canjar single set trigger and 12x Leopold. Shoots great, most groups are .75 or less, 5 shot. Serial number puts it at 1975. Have always heard the barrel concerns but have had zero problems with the three pre-warning Rugers that I have. Maybe I'm lucky, but wouldn't hesitate to buy another if priced right.

On the Shilen barrel thing, it was what I read many years ago. I forget where I read it, though I probably still have the info somewhere. Going on memory, the gist of the article was that Ruger had outsourced a lot of their barrels, and because of that the quality back then (70’s) wasn’t consistent. The article suggested that the 77V barrels were outsourced to Shilen, though I don’t think it was stated as fact. All I can say positively was that my 77V shot great, and I shot it a lot. The smallest 5 shot group I’ve ever done was with that rifle.

Previous owner was a New Mexico cowboy, who used it as a truck gun on coyotes.

Yes, it is a good buy. Happy Birthday in the future.

22-250 and has been a joy to own and shoot.
