I’m looking for a replacement lightweight stock that will take a beating. It will have to fit a Ruger M77 tang and the Ruger MKII rifles. Ones a long action. Ones a short.
I use McMillans on my Rugers. They won’t do EDGE fill but for my purpose I’m okay with it. Great stocks.
McMillan for std weight stocks and MPI if you need a lightweight.
I replaced the stock on my Ruger M77 African in 9.3x62 because of for end warping issues. It was ordered with edge fill and they said it could be done with Edge fill except that the front receiver bolt area had to be solid glass because of the Ruger angled receiver screw. The stock weighs 28 ounces, which is 2 ounces heavier than the original walnut stock. Being it is a 9.3, I am OK with the couple of extra ounces. It is a very good stock and I really like the ergos of the McMillan Ruger MKII Classic design. However, If I was ever to buy another stock for a Ruger M77 in a lighter caliber, I would go for something lighter than the factory Walnut stock and probably check out MPI or Wildcat. Also, the McMillan cost me $525. OK. But I have heard that Mcmillan has had a price increase and a stock will now cost around $700. I really like Ruger M77's, but if this is the case, I would be tempted to just replace the M77 with a Browning X-Bolt or Tikka T3, as both have excellent factory synthetic (good plastic) stocks on them. Brown Precision Kevlar camo painted. My M77 Mkll weighs 7# 2 ounces with a 30mm 1.5-6x42 Zeiss.
For the MKII, the factory synthetic from recent All Weathers is cheap and tough. Weighs about the same as wood. Sometimes Ruger and/or Midway has such stuff in stock, or check ebay.
