I would like to use this in my 270 for closer shots to reduce damage to meat. I typically don’t shoot at deer further than 150-200 yards. Are any of you using this ammo? Anyone using 120gr SST’s in reduced power handloads? Thanks in advance.

This load would be a poor choice to reduce meat damage. The .277 120 gr SST is going to have violent expansion in the .270 lite at close range.

The .277 230 SST is designed for a 6.8 SPC AR-15 cartridge. I hunt with a 6.8 and can attest the SST round is fast expansion and fragmentation in a 6.8.

Using this bullet in a 270 Win means Hornady is pushing it even faster than in a 6.8, but still with less recoil than most 270 loads.

A better choice for reduced meat damage would be a tougher bullet loaded on the light end.

Or the 150 grain loads for the 270 and keep the bullets off the big pieces of meat you wanna eat. Mostly anything bonded would be a little easier on meat, as would a monolithic bullet.

Slow it down and use heavier bullets and you will get the results you're looking for.

I'd either throttle back 130 interlocks to something like 2700 fps or use a decent 150 grain bullet loaded modestly.

Yeah, I was thinking about trying the 150 grain Fusions, I have had good luck with their 165gr 30/06.

Yes, I would definitely consider the Fusion bullet, either factory or handload. They are a modestly priced bullet with great performance.

The original RN Rem. 150 gr. Core lokt was loaded just for this purpose. Remington still offers a 150 RN but it looks more like a semi spitzer so it may not be the old original Core-Lokt design which was very good. Federal has a 150 Fusion RN which should be good but I haven't tried it. If you handload you have all sorts of possibilities. The 270 managed recoil load might be another possibility but the SST load may have replaced it.

Last animal I shot with a .270 was an antelope back in 2009. Bullet hit one of the short ribs, angled on though and exited just behind the off shoulder. The antelope did a short maybe 30 foot half circle and expired. Bullet was the 150 gr. Sierra Game King at 2880 FPS. The animal was 75 yards away. Entrance hole was about .75 to maybe one inch and the exit about 1.5". Didn't seen to be much expansion and only a little rib meat damaged.
One of my hunting buds used that same bullet in a .270 WSM and shot a cow elk at just about 100 yards. I don't remember the entrance hole but the exit was about 3.5" on an almost perfect broadside shot.
I quit 130 gr. bullets years ago as even Noslers damaged too much good eating meat on the deer I shot with that cartridge.
I switched to the 150 gr. bullets on recommendation of a friend who only hunted with a .270. They worked just fine for me.

I have shot a lot of deer (big and not so big) using c&c 150 grain bullets in a 270 without excessive damage, from 10' out to about 400 yards. I originally started using them when a 130 spitzer (nosler solid base IIRC) got stopped by a mule deer buck's neck vertebrae at 30 yards. Typically they would go maybe 10-20 yards after the shot.

I tend to think the Remington Managed Recoil 115 grain Corelokt at 6.8 speeds. They group great in my Mountain Rifle but haven't shot a deer with it. It is very accurate and hits about 1-in. lower at 100 than full power 130s.

I’ve shot two deer with the .270 rem managed recoil ammo each at about 60 yards. Very little damage to meat.

150 partition or monos

I bought a box of it a few years ago to shoot out of older Browning A Bolt Stainless generously loaned to me by brother in law when I started rifle deer hunting. I sucked at shooting that thing and it has a pretty sharp recoil with normal 130’s so really thought I’d practice more with it. Sighted in with but never hunted it as I decided to purchase my own Howa 6.5 soon after. Should be good on deer and Especially pigs out to 150 or so. It’s about as accurate as anything else out of that gun which is about 1.5 MOA ish.

I had a buddy that spur of the moment bought his step son a ruger #1 in 270 when he was 14. Kid felt the factory rounds recoiled a bit much for him at that age. So they brought me the rifle and some brass and I worked up a load with 110gr Pro hunters. Starting load of H4350. Recoil was tame , it consistently put the pro hunters into tiny groups.
He shot one deer with it that fall. Worked fine.
Fast growing teenager had a growth spurt and his grand father wound up buying him an model 70 in ‘06. As far as I know the Ruger has been a safe queen for the last 10 years.
Nothing says you need to pack a case of any cartridge to the brim and jam a pill on top to get peak performance. Depending on your need you can tailor a load for a specific use at will , that’s the beauty of handliads.

I'd track down some 160 NP's on load'em on the light side.
