I now have one of each. For these two rifles to share so many components and heritage, a side by side presents a lot of contrasts. The sauer looks like it was produced on the west side of the Berlin wall while the mauser from the east side. In a beauty contest the sauer wins easily.

I have shot the mauser yet but hope it lives up to some of the user reviews. Anyone else have both or experience with each?

I'm curious about the ergos. From pictures it looks like the Sauer has a more pronounced (tighter) grip angle. Is that the case? Or is it just the way the pictures post?

Not sure I understand the question. Stocks are very different. Both seem to have adequate stiffness for my use. The profiles are different. The sauer stock is heavier, more robust which makes the xt version with a 22" barrel noticeably heavier than a m18 with a 24" barrel.

Which has the more open grip (e.g. measured from the middle of the trigger to the front edge of the grip itself)?

I have been eyeballing the M18...Been around a few Sauers,but not the Mauser...When do you plan on shooting it?? From the pics it does look a little basic,but I didn't think ugly..

More info!!

Both are marketed as entry level guns for 2 top shelf companies. Price point for each was very good. I'm no expert but fit and finish goes to the sauer 100. More polished bluing, slicker, quieter bolt. Cycling rounds thru the action took some serious effort at first with the m18, not nearly as much with the sauer. Dry firing each...sauer sounds and feels tighter.

Wont be able to shoot the m18 for a few days, but if it groups well none of the above matters. I expect it to get better with more work, read a lot reviews by satisfied owners. Bought it primarily as a soft recoiling magnum in 6.5 prc, stepping down from 300 wsm.

Your decision may be a tough one. I know both rifles and they both shoot extremely well. There are some Youtube videos of the M18 shooting extreme distances that you may want to check out. Both guns are from Isny, Germany and are made in the same plant as the M98 and the Blaser line. Both barrels come from the same barrel shop on the Blaser campus. Good luck and enjoy both rifles.

Depending on what caliber you may want, europtic has the m18 as low as $400.....the 6.5 prc I got was $479

I scored the sauer 100 a year ago for $450.....easily the best bang for the buck I've had in a long time.

I wish the M18 was available in 6.5x55.

Hitting the 100 yd range hopefully tomorrow to zero the nikon monarch 3 , 2.5x10. Then next weekend will try some 200 and 300 yd work just for sheetz n giggles. At my age am my skills I have no business hunting deer at those ranges.

Does either have two action lengths for .308 & .270 ?

My understanding is both makes use long action length for all calibers, shortening mag boxes to accommodate short action rounds, much like tikka. Sauer 100 and mauser m18 mags are interchangeable.

Well......first trip to the range today. Put 20 rounds thru the m18. Took 6 shots to get the scope situated at 25 yds after bore sighting.

First 3 shots at 100 yds printed a .5 inch group allowing 5 minutes between shots. Adjusted the scope accordingly, the next 4 shots featured a first shot bad hold jumper that defied the scope adjustment....followed by 3 shots within a .75 diameter that seem to agree with the scope change, a 5th shot stretched a 4 shot group to 1.25 inches.
A final 6 shot group all fit an inch diameter.

I'm normally a bench rest boob searching for consistency in set up and hold so I'm happy with the potential so far. This rifle shoots a whole lot better than me.

I'm not a reloader so someone else may need to reply. I was shooting hornady precision hunter and pretty sure it was 147 gr. There wasnt much space left in the dbm when loading.

Generous is not how I would describe what's left over, looked tight at 147.

Correction, these were 143 gr.
