Tomorrow, I will be picking up a unfired, SS, laminate Ruger 77 22 Hornet. Im going to order a couple of mags and pick up some ammo from my local shop.

Are there any certain tweaks that need to happen to this rifle from the get go?

I punched mine to K hornet before ever pulling the trigger. Past Ruger hornets I owned had sloppy chamber tolerances, had lots of brass stretch and weren't too accurate. I have heard mixed reviews about getting the bolt tightened up.

I rented a K- Hornet reamer, punched a CZ 527 and a T/C Contender. I was careful and ended up with chamber duplicates, i. e. empty cases from one chambers perfectly in the other.

I bought one almost 3 years ago and have done absolutely nothing to it. It's one of most accurate factory rifles I've ever owned. Oh I did have the barrel threaded.

I’ve had one of these for over 20yrs now ... without a doubt my favorite do all around the ranch rifle! Mines been accurate and deadly with 40gr vmax and lilgun powder with a small pistol primer. Lots of folks complain about accuracy with these but it’s never been a problem with mine.

I'd love to know the load data for your Hornet. I'm real interested in the combination you use.

I have a 77/22 Hornet that I have done absolutely nothing to but add a scope. Shoots great for me with factory Federal and Hornady 35 grain ammo. Use it as my primary red fox calling rifle and have killed 50 or so with it. Also this fall I killed a coyote with it at 75 yds when it came in unexpectedly while calling an area that I didnt know held yotes.

Have heard good things about the accurizing and also k hornet conversions done by an outfit called Connecticut Precision Chambering. Was considering sending mine to them but it shoots well enough that I dont see the need.

Good stuff here. I'll take it out this weekend for some paper punching, and we'll see how she does. Hopefully, it will be one of the "accurate out of the box" rifles.

If it suffers in the accuracy dept, well, then it will probably take a ride to Connecticut. His price for accurizing one of these is very reasonable!

i purchased this same rifle 2 years ago i had a old 1x4 leupold in the safe so i put that old scope on this 22 hornet rifle shots an honest 1 1/4 inch at 100 yards i felt thats good enough have killed plenty critters with this rifle. you will enjoy this neat little rifle and the magazine works so well i wished more rifles had this type of magazine. good luck,Pete53

Many years ago when the 77/22 Hornet first came out I bought one - the heavy barrel model and I could not get mine to shoot very well at all.
Functioned and looked great but accuracy was discouraging.
I tried for a year or so to find a combination that shot well but no luck so I sold that Rifle.
Just last year I bought a Ruger 77/17 Hornet and it shoots very well indeed with Hornady factory ammunition - about to try out my handloads in it now.
I should have tried some bedding with my original 22 Hornet - I kind of wish I hadn't given up on it.

And this - many years ago I bought a beautiful Ruger #1-B in 22 Hornet and I tried for years to get it to shoot with no luck.
Finally following a suggestion from a CampFire member I switched to nickel plated brass (Remington), H 110 powder and Hornady 35 grain V-Max bullets and the Ruger started shooting pretty well!
I made all three changes, as suggested by the CampFirer, at once so I am NOT sure which "change" improved the accuracy.
I have heard the neck tension aspect of the 22 Hornet is an important factor in obtaining best accuracy?

Got it to the range today and it seems to be a good shooter! I got just over MOA at 100 yards pretty easily. My only complaint is the heavy trigger. I'll be working on that shortly! When I get it down to 3lbs, I'll bet the group shrinks a bit more.

I've owned 2. Guess I'm a slow learner. The first one had what I considered a [bleep] / sloppy chamber 'cause the fired ammo was showing serious stretching at the web and I couldn't reload it. Ruger didn't care, "factory ammo only". So I sold it, bought another. Same problem. Real loose, though SAAMI spec, chamber dimensions and very tight, though SAAMI spec ammo dimensions. They were really cool rifles other than that. Today I'd probably just have the barrel set back a couple threads and a clean chamber cut.

I bought one used about 10 years ago and sent it to Connecticut Precision Chambering for a K chambering job, bolt shim replacement, trigger job, and target crown. The total bill was $225.00 The trigger now breaks clean at 2 1/2 lbs, and the gun shoots 1" groups while fireforming with WW 46gr HP's. I haven't even worked up a K load with it yet. Love the gun, and love the work that CPC did to it.

I bought one when they first came out. Accuracy was pretty much nonexistent. Tried every trick known to man to improve it. No luck, eventually sold it. They are neat little rifles.

I checked out the website of Connecticut Precision just now and they seem to really have a handle on the 77/22 Hornet family.

the Ruger 22 hornet i purchased is real tight and it shoots well with my handloads ,i have never purchased any factory ammo for any of my hornets ,but this Ruger S.S. 77 22 hornet i use as a critter killer works just fine and sits in the cold Minnesota garage year around and always works and never gets cleaned.

No issues with the 40 Vmax and Ruger mag confines? I’ve always fed mine 35’s with an eye toward the 40.
