Just wondering who out there would buy readily available 30 grain .17 high bc (around G1 of .285 that work in a 9 twist barrel) if Hornady did a 30 grain VMax or Berger did a 30 grain varmint bullet? I've been waiting for years for such a bullet.

I'm not sure what your shooting. Maybe you can talk Hammer bullets into making enough to shot coyotes with.
What is the bc on Chan's or black hole's 30 gun .17's .

I think the Kindler Golds were .270, the Bergers and Nagels less. Unless the bc is high, I would use the 25 VMax at a faster speed.

Berger does make a 30 grain 17 caliber "Varmint" bullet.

The reason "I" would not buy any 30 grain 17 caliber bullets is because the Berger 25 grain bullets do everything I need done (and have for many years!) in my 17 caliber centerfire Varmint Rifles.
And as far as your "readily available" ANYTHING (reloading component wise!) remark goes - well that was good for a laugh.

Berger doesn't make the 30 grain .17 anymore. If you click on the link you sent you will see that they are discontinued. With the "readily available" comment, I was really referring to readily available during normal times, not now with the shortages. I know the Berger 25 grain are good at short to medium distances, I have several boxes of them left as well as Hornady Hollow Points...but I prefer the 25 Vmax as my current barrel is one in nine twist. But at longer distances the Bergers suffer too much wind-drift because of their low bc. Berger 25 grain is .152 v .230 for 25 VMax.

Roughly 15 years ago Berger Did make such a bullet or nearly so Bought in on their last run. Kind of put the 17 Fireball & 17 Remington on steroids as 17 caliber coyote rounds go. when fur is of value again so will these bullets carry a serious value.

yes, up to a certain length. Ideally, it would be made with as high a b.c. as possible that will still work with a 9 twist barrel. That's why I thought a G1 around .285 should still work if the tip is plastic.

I agree. I think the length will be more of a factor than the extra 5 grains over a 25.

Would not interest me. The Hornady V max, 20 is my go to PD bullet. I use 25 Berger’s on coyotes. I don’t need a 30 grain.

All I use are 30's in my 17-204, but I've got enough stash of Black Hole and Chan's to last me a few years, so until they're gone, won't be shopping for any more. But I also don't consider my 17/204, or any other .17, as a long range killer, so don't really see the need for high BC bullets.

They'd be just a little better for that 300-350 yard range especially if there was a bit of a wind blowing.

IDK, I don't shy away from shooting coyotes to 400 with the 17-204 and that is a rare occasion anyways, but I still don't consider that as "long range". I never call coyotes with wind over 20 mph either, just a waste of time. I just don't see that a higher BC bullet is really necessary in a .17 cal. of any flavor.

Most of the time they don’t exit, but vaporize in the chest, out my 17 Rem at about 4000 fps.
With todays fur prices, I really don’t care about damage.

I use 30 gr Nagels with a 9 twist barrel.

To stay away from getting messy, Just stay away from heavier bone as Im sure you wish to save the pelt.

Not sure that would add anything for me. I already have a .204 that likes 40 grain Hornadys. Rather than a heavier .17 bullet I just wish Remington's 25 grain HP was available again. The 2 VMAX offerings already do most of what I need from a .17.
