The thought hit me this morning: now that I'm an old retired fart, I can pretty well hunt when I feel like it. The thought of putting a small dent in the local coyote population came next to mind.

I have the following in my inventory, ripe for use:

1) A Savage 340 in .223 REM
2) A Mauser in 25-06
3) An AR in .223 REM
4) A Savage 325 in 30/30 WIN

I suppose if I really wanted to, I could manage a 300 yard shot, but that would take some doing. The farm is far more conducive to 200 yard set-ups with all the trees and undulations in the landscape.

My questions are as follows:

1) Assuming I limit myself to 200 yards, Will the Savage be sufficient? What Cup&Core bullets would you recommend? As I remember, it likes 55 grain over 60+grains and won't shoot a 70 Grain.
2) If I tried the 25-06, what bullet would you recommend? I'm currently using 117 grain Hornadys, but the rig is set up for whitetail.
3) Going lower than 150 grains is new to me in the 30-30. What bullet would you recommend?

The 223 is the obvious as Yotes often come in pairs.
I'd swap the 223 bbl, bot and mag for 6mm ARC that gives you 400 yards.
Good call and decoy also helps.

I can tell you from experience a 25-06 will whollop a coyote, no need to change from those 117's unless you want to do so. Put them 1.5 inches high at 100 and let them rip.

A lot depends on if you plan to keep the hides ( or a hide for yourself) For your 200 yd shots your Savage 340 will work just fine. For saving fur Id say use a 50 or 55 gr Hornady Vmax...for strict utility and economy the basic Hornady 55 gr SP...works on everything and isn't too hard on the hides.

Leave the .25-06 at home unless you really want to beam them into deep space.

Leave the .30-30 at home.

.223. Set it up an inch and a quarter hi at 100. Your good. Nice fast round, front edge of the shoulders running at 200 yards will take care of things. No holdover.

It would be the AR or the Savage 340, I killed a bunch of predators with my Stevens 840 (same rifle) in 222 Rem. For me it would be how it is set up. I prefer a scope with lots of FOV on the bottom end (40+ feet) as calling coyotes can get up close and personal. Most of my called coyotes are under 100 yard and a majority of those under 50. My go-to guns wear 1-4, 1.5-5, 1.5-6, 1.75-5 or 2-12s, 3x on the bottom end and I start getting claustrophobic . All of these are 300 yard capable.

My got to .224 bullet is the Speer 52gr FB HP, very reasonably priced and performs great.

The CZ 527 in 22 Hornet pushing a handload 40 grain Sierra HP Varminter will get it done out to 200+.....like shooting a 22LR on steroids. Leupold 2 x 7.

Either the AR or the 340 would be my top choice. 50 or 55BT is hell on yoties and generally pretty good on the hides. The 25/06 will definitely kill them very very dead but will definitely wreck the hide.

In side of 200 yrds I like my AR, if your not saving hides any thing will work. Rio7

I’ve killed many coyotes with a 223, both AR and bolt guns. My bullets of choice are 40 and ballistic tips. Both work great. The 50 is better on “running away” shots.
